Kentucky Picture of the Day: Daffodils at Jack C. Fisher Park

April 29, 2014 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Daffodils in Owensboro

A few of my daughters and I took advantage of the beautiful spring weather a few weeks ago and enjoyed a long walk at Jack C. Fisher Park (Owensboro).

Daffodils

Spring is always eagerly anticipated and warmly welcomed, but I think it was even more so this year, thanks to a particularly long, cold winter.

When we got to the part of the trail that winds beside Parrish Avenue, I saw something slithering across the path ahead of us and knew – without a doubt – what it was.

While my daughters (much, much braver than I am) hurried up to the snake to take pictures, I took a WIDE right and avoided even looking at the thing.

Daffodils

Apparently it was as eager to get away from us as I was to get away from it.  Even though my phobia hates to admit it, they really don’t pose any harm to you if you leave them alone.

Which I fully, fully, fully, fully, fully intend to do.

Pictures of the Day: Kentucky Really Shows off In the Spring!

April 19, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Apple and Pear Trees with Bees

“No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.”  – Proverb

Yesterday was the sort of day we nature lovers have been waiting for. A day so beautiful it’s all but impossible to stay indoors. Naturally, this tree-hugger had to grab her camera and take off for the yard.

I left our inside cat (Alexa) sleeping and snoring on the couch while our outside cat (Hannah) and I quoted from Robin Hood, “To the trees!”

Sweet Hannah

Hannah is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest cats in the world.  She’s syrup-y sweet and I’m not convinced a sweeter-natured being has ever lived. She’s never happier than when we’re outside – in her element – with her. We kid ourselves, thinking that we’re entertaining her, but I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around.

We did a lot of traipsing around the yard yesterday, taking pictures of just about everything along the way.

Dandelion

“The front door to springtime is a photographer’s best friend.” – Terri Guillemets

After an especially long, cold winter Hannah and I both decided that the dandelions seemed lovelier than ever.

Hannah Loving Everything about Spring

“Every spring is the only spring – a perpetual astonishment.”  – Ellis Peters

There were countless bees buzzing around our pear and apple trees, and as long as I lurked around taking pictures, it’s a wonder they didn’t use me for target practice.

I tried to capture them in their crazy little frenzy but they just don’t show up that well in the pictures.

Spring Tree with Bees

“The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day he created Spring.” – Bern Williams

One thing that does show up is just how Heavenly this Spring day was and Hannah and I are looking forward to a lot more…. with or without the bees.

Spring Trees

One final thought… a pet makes absolutely everything in the world better.

New Theater at John James Audubon State Park

April 17, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

John James Audubon State Park Theater
I love when I have the opportunity to announce exciting new attractions in and around Kentucky and this announcement is especially cool.

John James Audubon State Park will open its new museum theater in a few days – on April 19.

The 47-seat Audubon Theater and Discovery Center will allow museum guests to see a short film about Audubon as they begin their gallery tour. The project was funded by the Friends of Audubon and with coal-severance funds through Henderson Fiscal Court.

“The Kentucky State Parks are grateful to everyone who contributed money and time to this project,” Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker said. “This will help attract more visitors to this park and make their experience so much more meaningful.”

The theater will also be used for other films, special events, lectures and museum programs. The theater will be open during regular museum hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and at other times for special events.

John James Audubon State Park is the site where Audubon studied and painted birds from 1810-1819. The park is equipped with cottages and a campground, and offers many recreational opportunities, including a nine-hole golf course, six miles of hiking trails, fishing and more. It also has a museum and nature center that interprets Audubon’s life through a collection of his paintings and memorabilia.

For more information, visit www.parks.ky.gov.

John James Audubon Spate Park is located on U.S. 41 – on the northern outskirts of Henderson, ½-mile south of the U.S. 41 bridge over the Ohio River. It’s between Henderson, Kentucky and Evansville, Indiana – meaning there are LOTS of places to eat supper after a fun day at the park!

Oooh La La: The 2014 Kentucky Tourism Guide is a Beauty!

April 17, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

2014 Kentucky Tourism Guide

I recently received my 2014 Kentucky Tourism Guide and… as always… it’s a knock-out. Seriously, their guides are always absolute beauties.  You gotta love the cover photo: a mom, daughter, beautiful horse (how Kentucky is that?) and probably my favorite thing about the picture – an adorable dog looking right at the camera.

Dogs are such hams!

The guide is filled with beautiful pictures and a wealth of information. From start to finish, the guide makes you feel…

  1. Proud to call Kentucky home.
  2. Anxious to get out there and not just SEE Kentucky but LIVE Kentucky.

Well played, beautiful guide. Well played.

If you haven’t already, click over  to 2014 Kentucky Tourism Guide and request your own free guide today. The guide comes with an equally impressive 2014 Official Highway Map.

After all, you don’t want to miss a thing when you’re on one of your great adventures.
