Look alive, history buffs! For those of us who just can’t get our fill of history, February is the month to venture to the Land Between the Lakes area.

Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area will be hosting Civil War themed programs at The Homeplace, a living history farm on the Tennessee portion of LBL, Saturday, February 12 and 19 from 10am-3pm. These programs will be offered in addition to the popular Fort Henry Anniversary Walk to be held again on Saturday, February 5, from 2:30-4pm.

In February of 1862, “Between the Rivers” was bracing for war. Confederate forces occupied Fort Henry with Federal forces moving up the Tennessee River. Relive the events before and during the siege of Fort Henry on this free guided walk around the remnants of Fort Henry’s outer fortifications. Meet at Fort Henry Hiking Trail Parking Lot at 2:30pm on February 5, dress for the weather, waterproof footgear recommended, and moderate walking required. Prior to the walk, The Homeplace will be hosting a free Fort Henry Anniversary Program from 12:30-2pm.

On February 12 and 19, learn more about what life was like in this area during the years before war came to “Between the Rivers.” Visit The Homeplace for a glimpse of daily life in antebellum middle Tennessee. Enjoy a self-guided tour of a working second generation family farmstead and learn just how important rivers were to families in this area during the 1850s. Program available with paid admission; $4 adults, $2 ages 5-12, and free ages 4 and under. “We are very excited to be offering more Civil War themed programs at LBL,” said Cindy Earls, Special Events Coordinator. “To have programs at The Homeplace featuring what life was like before the war and offering a guided walk at Fort Henry during the anniversary of the battle, truly allows visitors a chance to see history come to life.”

All programs will take place weather permitting, as February weather can be very unpredictable. For more information on these programs or cancellation due to weather, call 270-924-2020.

Land Between The Lakes is managed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with “Friends of LBL,” to provide public lands outdoor recreation and environmental education. We encourage visitors to review our website at www.lbl.org each season, and throughout the season, for our Calendar of Events, maps, updates on programs and policies, safety information, and temporary trail and road closures.

Winter Packages Offered At Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park

We still have a little bit of winter left here in Kentucky, but it’s not all bad.  I’m (literally) counting the days to baseball season and chomping at the bit to get up to my elbows in dirt in my flower and herb beds, but snow is beautiful and UK basketball season is always fun.

Here’s another advantage to winter: Sometimes you can score some great deals.  Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park, for example has quite a special going on.

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park is offering some winter specials good through March 31, 2011.

The Bed and Breakfast Package for two includes a lodge room for one night and breakfast for $75 plus tax.

The Blue Licks Journey for Two includes dinner, a lodge room for one night and breakfast for two people for $99 plus tax.

The rate for both packages is good Wednesday through Saturday and cannot be used during special events or holidays. These packages are based on availability.

Bird Watchers, Get Ready for Winter Bird Blitz at Natural Bridge

Kentucky State Parks: Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Fellow bird lovers of Kentucky, this is right up our alley… or should I say right up our tree.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park is hosting a Winter Bird Blitz on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5. The Winter Bird Blitz features a day of birding activities on Friday followed by a bird count on Saturday morning and afternoon. Bird count data over time in any given area can provide valuable insights into the long-term health of bird populations and the environment… and besides, it’s fun and free!

Friday’s birding activities will be led by the park naturalists Brian Gasdorf and Tyler Morgan.  The day will begin in the Hemlock Lodge lobby for a birding basics program from 9:30-11:30 a.m. covering topics such as binoculars, field guides and bird identification characteristics.  From 1-2 p.m. visitors can join a bird watching motor tour looking for birds in different habitats at the park.  For $7, participants can build a cedar bird nest box from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the park’s nature center (supplies available on a first-come, first-serve basis.) In preparation for the bird count, a “Winter Birds of the Appalachian Woods” evening presentation will be held in the Hemlock Lodge lobby from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, bird count participants can join the park naturalists in the Hemlock Lodge lobby for a bird watching motor tour from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. counting birds at various 15 to 30 minute stops at Natural Bridge and the surrounding Red River Gorge area.  During the motor tour, every individual bird and bird species observed will be counted. Participants in the motor tour should bring their own lunch, drink and binoculars (a limited amount of binoculars will be available for a $5 fee during the guided motor tour.) Participants should also be sure to dress for the weather.

If interested in counting birds on your own on Saturday’s bird count, a map of possible birding locations, a bird checklist and other bird count information will be available at the front desk of the Hemlock Lodge.

For more information about the Winter Bird Blitz event, contact park naturalist Brian Gasdorf at 606 663-2214 or brian.gasdorf@ky.gov for more information.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park Will Host Winter Photography Weekend

Pine Mountain State Resort Park is set to provide off-season adventure with their upcoming Winter Photography Weekend on January 28-30.  The event features a digital photography competition, evening picture shows, and the exceptional photographic work and instruction of Tim Webb of Richmond, Kentucky.

Making good photographs in winter is a unique challenge.  The vibrant green of spring is vanquished and the azure blue of autumn skies is obscured by thick cloud cover.  It’s gray and white and winter all around, but there’s much more out there to engage the adventurous than first meets the eye, you just have to possess the will to find it… and take pictures of it!

The adventure lies in the pursuit of finding the right shot to satisfy the prescribed photo competition categories.  In the doing, participants explore mountain landscapes, both on foot and by car, searching for just the right shot, trusting that they’ll know it when they see it.  It’s truly an outdoor adventure that engages the senses.  And, it’s fun!

For those interested in participating there are a few things you need to know.  Perhaps most importantly, is the fact that you must own or have access to a computer with appropriate image evaluation and adjustment software to prepare your images for entry into the competition.  You must also provide your own CD and copy your images to it before submission.  The park doesn’t provide computers for participant use.  Some image “touch ups” are permitted but there are limitations.  Details on all these matters will be addressed in the registration packet received at event sign-in.

It’s also mandatory that all photographers be registered before beginning to shoot for the competition.  Advanced registration is recommended, to do so contact the park.  Official registration and sign-in will be conducted from 12:00 – 9:00 pm (EST) on Friday, January 28.  Official contest categories and other competition guidelines will be made available at sign-in.  All CD’s containing competition entries must be turned in at the Lower Lodge Lobby by 5:00 pm (EST) on Saturday, January 29.  The registration fee is $30 per person.  Packages that include meals and lodging are also available.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park offers spectacular mountain views from the dining room and a quality dining experience afforded at few other places in the region.

For more event info, contact the park at 606-337-3066 or 800-325-1712.

Kentucky Adventures in Fall and Winter… There’s Still Plenty to Do!

Panther Creek Park in Owensboro, Kentucky

The end of summer doesn’t mark the end of adventure in Kentucky! There are plenty of fun things left to do and wonderful things to see during the fall and winter months in Kentucky.  For one thing, hiking the trails in our beautiful state parks and city parks (like Panther Creek Park, pictured above) isn’t just fun, it’s good for you.

If you take a camera, you’ll find photo opportunities everywhere you look.  My dad was an avid photographer and he’d take some amazing pictures – not just of the gorgeous roses in his rose beds, but of trees, sunsets, hills, animals, etc.  He’d have his favorite pictures enlarged and my mom would mat and frame them. They made beautiful art work for the walls – art work that just LOOKED expensive.

If you have a really good camera and an even better eye for photography, it’s something you might want to consider.  Pictures like these would make cherished Christmas presents.

Head Outdoors this Fall and Winter in Kentucky

It’s great to get outside during the cooler temperatures during this time of year in Kentucky,” said First Lady Jane Beshear. “There’s plenty of nature to see and experience throughout our state and being outside is a good way to get healthy and stay fit.”

Here is a listing of some adventure tourism events in Kentucky during November and December. To learn about other events, visit www.tourism.ky.gov/outdoors/.

Elk Tours Offered at Three Kentucky State Parks

One of the things I love most about the beautiful state of Kentucky is our wildlife and all of the wonderful opportunities we have to enjoy such magnificent animals.  If you’ve never taken an elk viewing tour at one of our resort parks, mark your calendar and take the family this year.

Elk viewing tours at three Eastern Kentucky resort parks will once again be offered this fall and winter.

Visitors to Jenny Wiley, Buckhorn Lake and Pine Mountain can choose a weekend, stay at a state park lodge or cottage and arise early to enjoy one of these unique tours. Participants should bring their cameras – there should be great photography opportunities. The largest elk herds are located on privately owned lands that are normally closed to the public. This is one of the few opportunities available for the public to see the greatest number of elk.

The return of elk to the region is considered to be one of Kentucky’s biggest wildlife management success stories. The animals, after being gone from the state for 150 years, were returned in 1997. They now number 11,000.
