New Tourism Attraction in Eastern Kentucky: Hikers, Look Alive!

Hiking in Kentucky

Hiking in Kentucky is always as fun as it is healthy.  Fortunately, Kentuckians now have another opportunity to get outside and enjoy our state’s beauty.

Gov. Beshear and the First Lady of Kentucky have announced the latest tourism attraction in Eastern Kentucky and it’s an exciting and adventurous one. If you enjoy hiking, horseback riding, and/or cycling, this news will be right up your alley.. or should I say right up your trail!?

A former railroad line will become a new trail for hikers, horseback riders and cyclists and will be the latest adventure tourism attraction for Eastern Kentucky, Governor Steve Beshear announced today.

Known as the Dawkins Line, the 36-mile stretch runs through Johnson, Magoffin and Breathitt counties and will be managed by the Kentucky State Parks. The trail will be developed in phases. Once complete, the Dawkins Line will be the longest rail-to-trail project in the state.

“This trail will help attract tourists to Eastern Kentucky and will be a boost to the local tourism economy,” Gov. Beshear said. “This trail will not only promote adventure tourism, but it will also be a community asset that promotes fitness and health.”

First Lady Jane Beshear said the former railroad line will make an excellent multi-use trail.

“This new trail gives us a great opportunity to show guests the beauty of Eastern Kentucky,” Mrs. Beshear said. “Other places have successfully converted rail lines to trails, and I am confident this will become a popular attraction for this area.”

Another successful rails-to-trails project is in southwest Virginia — the 34-mile Virginia Creeper Trail. The trail in Virginia has led to new businesses and shops with a positive economic impact.

The Kentucky State Parks have received a multi-county coal severance grant of $500,000 to help support the trail development. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is providing the Department of Parks with up to $2 million in transportation program funding for the transformation of the Dawkins Line into a multi-use trail.

State funding for the property was initially provided by the 2006 General Assembly. The purchase of the property from the R.J. Corman Railroad Group was finalized in the spring of 2011.

The project has support from trail organizations and is expected to help develop the local tourism economy. The trail name comes from the Dawkins Lumber Company, which developed the rail line in the early 1900s for timber.

Kentucky Bisons Migrate Out of Owensboro

Our minor league basketball team here in Owensboro, Kentucky (Kentucky Bisons) is through after just two seasons.

Kentucky Bison’s owner Jay Sills announced on the Kentucky Bison’s website that the America Basketball Association franchise would be suspending operations after two seasons in Owensboro. In a message on the website, Sills blamed lack of community support for the decision.

“We deserved better support than we got from many, even from the city,” Sills said. According to Sills, the team had a difficult time making money during home games at the Sports Center, and couldn’t travel because of a lack of advertising money.

Apparently the ABA has been working with him to move The Bisons to another city.

“I love Owensboro, but apparently only a few of our loyal fans feel the same way about our effort, and to you we sincerely apologize,” said Sills.

Ironically, The Kentucky Bisons were a huge success on the court. The team won a championship in 2009, and made the ABA finals again last season.

As someone that calls Owensboro home, I have to say that there’s plenty of blame to go around. I don’t think it’s fair to level it entirely at anyone in particular.  For what it’s worth, here’s how I see the blame’s distribution:

  • First of all, there’s a little thing we like to call the economy.  Over the past two years, it stink, stank, stunk.  When most families are doing well to put food on the table, pay the bills, and keep the car running – luxuries like sporting events fall to the wayside.
  • There was absolutely zero (or next to zero) effort to develop a relationship with the community. In fact, I’d say that half the people in Owensboro couldn’t tell you anything about The Bisons.  It would have been pretty cool to see the players/coaches involved in community events – putting their faces and names “out there.”
  • Advertising? Again, I’m not sure where the blame would fall on this one, but there was very little (very, very, very, very little) advertising.  People can’t jump on board when they aren’t aware there’s even a train!
  • Most of us were under the impression that the Bison’s were only temporarily calling Owensboro home.  In all fairness, who wants to get involved in supporting a team that only has one foot in your city limits?

I regret that the team is having to pull out of Owensboro. This is a wonderful town and the people are great. I’ve always wanted the town to have a minor league team – a baseball team would be pretty great.  It probably would have helped our chances if the arrangement with The Bisons hadn’t ended in… well… extinction.

I hope that the Kentucky Bison’s next “home” is a permanent one.  I hope the players and coaches reach out to the very community who’s support they expect and  want. I also hope that fate will bring us such a team in Owensboro. It could be a lot of fun. Just because this arrangement was a bust doesn’t mean the next one would be for either side.  Live and learn, right?

Best of luck to an exceptional team.  I feel like I hardly even knew you.  Guess that’s the problem.

UK Basketball Exhibition Games in Canada

The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team’s three exhibition games in Windsor, Ontario will begin on August 15th. I, for one, am more than ready to see UK Basketball back in swing!

The exhibition games will be televised in the Owensboro area on channel WTVW.

Be sure to check your local television channels for details in your area.

The Wildcats play the University of Windsor at 6 pm on August 15, the Western Mustangs at 5 pm August 16, then face a rematch with Windsor at 10 am on August 17. All games will be played at the St. Denis Center in Windsor.

The 2010-2011 Wildcats have the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class as announced by ESPN Recruiting, Rivals.com, and Scout.com. The class includes freshman Terrence Jones, Enes Kanter, Brandon Knight, Doron Lamb, Stacey Poole Jr., and junior college transfer Eloy Vargas.

Lots of new faces, numbers, and names to memorize but I’m pretty sure Big Blue Nation is up for the task. I’m sure that you, like my husband and me, will have your guide ready. We’ve got the drill down in our household:

  • Popcorn with M&M’s
  • Coke and Diet Coke
  • The player’s guide
  • UK t-shirts
  • Game faces on!

You can feel the excitement building around Kentucky – not only for the college basketball season, but for our guys in the NBA as well. The upcoming months will be filled with fun, excitement, drama, and blue.

And popcorn. Lots of popcorn.

Kentucky Speedway To Get Sprint Cup Race In 2011

Kentucky Speedway fans, buckle up and hold on.  According to a story today on Bleacher Report.com, Kentucky Speedway will get a NASCAR Sprint Cup race in July, 2011.

The source apparently opted to remain anonymous because the decision wasn’t exactly official yet.  The words “anonymous” and “exactly” are enough to keep me from marking my calendar in ink just yet – BUT, being a born-optimist, I’m penciling it in.

And crossing my fingers.

From Bleacher Report:

The 1.5 mile racetrack has been home to some of the best Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series races over the last several years. Also housing IRL races, and even a few festivals. The track sits almost exactly halfway between Louisville, KY and Cincinnati, OH, on I71, and the surrounding area is ripe for expansion.

Follow Kentucky Speedway on Twitter – Best way I can think of to stay on top of the news!
