E.P. Tom Sawyer Park is Gearing Up for Fun in the Sun

E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park - Louisville Kentucky

Over the next three months, E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky will be hosting an array of fun in the sun events that range from educational programs on gardening and aquatic life to a triathlon competition!

Below is a rundown of these events from June through August (You should bookmark this page and keep it handy throughout the coming months):

Frogs and Toads!
When: Saturday, June 13 at 7 p.m.
Fee: $2 per person

Kentucky has 20 species of frogs and toads.  Join a  hike  to the vernal pond and learn how to identify some of these frogs and toads by their calls and patterns.  This is an early evening hike when many frogs are out calling. Meet at Gazebo near Sawyer-Hayes Community Center.

Keeping Your Garden Growing Through the Dry Months
When: Friday June 19 at 4 p.m.

This program will cover various mulching techniques and teach you how to conserve water while keeping your plants happy and healthy during the dry months of summer. Meet at the Tom Sawyer Community Gardens.

Canning, Drying, and Freezing
When: Friday, July 17 at 4 p.m.

This program covers various techniques for storing and preserving your garden produce so you can enjoy them all winter long. Meet near the Tom Sawyer Community Gardens.

What is Lurking in the Water?
When: Saturday, July 18 at 10 a.m.
Fee: $2 per person

Streams are full of life that we often overlook. Join the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer staff as we investigate the depths of Goose Creek in search of the elusive aquatic life. Meet at Picnic Grove across from the Archery Range.

Triathlon XXVIII
When: Saturday, Aug. 1.
Fee: $55 for individuals, $90 for teams

E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park is proud to host its 28th annual Triathlon. The race is a USAT sanctioned event that consists of a 1/2 mile swim, 14 mile bike ride and 5K run. All phases of the race will be held either on the park grounds or on the surrounding roads. Both individuals and teams are welcome, with registration from May 26 through July 11. The race fee is $55 for individuals and $90 for teams. In addition, a $10 one-day insurance fee is required for all non-USAT members. All race participants will receive an official triathlon shirt and prizes will be awarded both to age group winners and overall winners.

Growing Cool Weather Plants
When: Friday, Aug. 21 at 4 p.m.

This program covers the cool weather plants that can be grown while the days are getting shorter and the nights become cooler. Meet at the Tom Sawyer Community Gardens.

This Rocks!
When: Saturday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m.
Fee: $2 per person

Louisville is located in limestone karst topography. Join park staff and examine the limestone karst features in the park and discuss how they formed. Meet at Picnic Grove across from the Archery Range.

Getting to Know E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky
E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park is a 580 acre park within the urban landscape of Louisville. It serves as the only state park within Jefferson County. The park encompasses both active and passive recreation and leisure pursuits. Recreational facilities include an Olympic size outdoor pool, gymnasium with basketball, badminton, and pickleball courts, athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse, and flag football, a three-field softball complex, tennis courts, archery range, radio controlled airfield, and BMX bicycle track. The park offers some of the finest natural settings in the Metro area with the Goose Creek nature trail and large meadow and forested green space. The Louisville Dog Run Association calls the park home with a fenced six-acre tract. Outdoor adventure and enjoyment is also available with the Louisville Astronomical Society Urban Astronomy Center and Community Gardens. Meeting space is abundant in the park with small classrooms in the administrative building or the large reception hall and conference room found at the new Sawyer Hayes Community Center. The park also has three picnic shelters for family, corporate, and civic celebrations.

To visit E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park, take the Gene Snyder Freeway (Interstate 265) to Exit 32. Go west on Westport Road to Freys Hill Road. Take Freys Hill Road into the park.
