Fire Deaths in Kentucky Unusually High This Month

I read an unsettling, depressing article earlier. Apparently the month of December has been unusually deadly in the state of Kentucky when it comes to fires. Just this month alone, fires have claimed the lives of 14 people across the state. 10 of those deaths were in Central Kentucky.

The state officials say that some of these deaths could have been prevented. Below are the tips they feel everyone should know. Since I totally agree with that mindset, I’m passing the tips along to you.

1. Never use an extension cord for a space heater
2. Keep space heaters away from flammable materials
3. Inspect all alternative forms of heat
4. Have a working smoke detector
5. Have an exit plan

I’d also add – use caution when burning candles. Never leave them burning in a room that you aren’t in or at least very near. When they’re out of sight, they’re out of mind. That’s when you’re in danger of leaving the house while it’s still burning or going to bed without blowing it out.

Be safe. You can never exercise too much caution.
