Pagliai’s (Polly-Eyes) Pizza in Princeton, Kentucky? It’s what God had in mind when He planted the idea for pizza pie in the human mind. There is just no reason on earth that I can think of for pizza to be this delicious.
On a recent trip through Princeton, I was getting hungry enough to eat my purse. My husband begins to slow down and I think he’s turning into a Pizza Hut or A&W, either of which was fine with my stomach. However, he veers off to the right toward a restaurant I’d never seen or even heard of. I’m a gamer, and at the time I was a starving gamer, so I jumped out of the car without questions.
I read the sign just like any self respecting Kentuckian would do, thinking I had the perfect handle on the pronunciation. I gave it some flair and proudly announced, “Pag-lee-ayes?“ Seems my inner Italian wasn’t on duty (undoubtedly too weak from hunger). The proper pronunciation is Polly-Eyes.
As for the pizza, the proper pronunciation is “D- Good.”
My husband, who hasn’t learned a great deal over these 25 years, went to the men’s room and left me to order for our group of 4. I started off with bread sticks (also pronounced D- Good) and, since I couldn’t decide between the options, I ordered two large pizzas: One with black olives (a favorite topping), onions, and Canadian Bacon and the other with Pepperoni, onions, and ham.
I got the double crust (in between the thin and pan) and every single detail about these pizzas and breadsticks was divine. The crust was perfect, the sauce couldn’t have been more delicious, the toppings were fresh – and the cheese… finally, people who know that cheese on pizza are like compliments on a wife – lay it on thick, man!
I would say, “Next time you’re in Princeton, Kentucky, schedule supper at Pagliai’s,” but since I love you, I’m going to say: Get your rear in gear and head to Princeton, Kentucky for, quite possibly, the best pizza you’ve ever had.
From what I’ve heard and read, their salads and desserts are beyond Heavenly, too. We almost always try desserts, but we were all too full to even consider it.
But, hey, there’s always next time. If I can get the hubby to make two bathroom visits, I’ll be able to tell you about several of the desserts next time! Think that’s unlikely? Don’t count me out, and never count out the wonders of iced tea.
Go to Pagliai’sPizza in Princeton, Kentucky one night this week. Tell your sweetheart, “I’m taking you out to dinner tonight!” When they come to and are able to ask, “Where?” – Watch for their reaction when you lay, “Princeton, Kentucky!” on them.
THEN watch for their reaction when they take a bite…. When, that is, your eyes are through rolling around in the back of your own head. It’s that good.

I apologize for the fact that the picture at the top of the article is of a sign rather than the pizza. The photographers lacked self restraint and therefore we lack a picture. Awww, but the memories….
