If there’s one thing you can be certain of, I know good food. If there’s a second thing you can be certain of - my husband knows a good deal. While driving through Leitchfield, Kentucky last night, we both fell in love with a very charming restaurant.
You know how there are just some restaurants, shops, businesses…. or even people…. that have Kentucky written all over them? They’re what we call “Genuine Kentucky” and I, for one, am drawn to them like a dirty kid is to white.
The Farmer’s Feed Mill Restaurant (located at 110 Sequoia Dr - you’re going to need that address) was just such a place. As soon as we got out of the car, I took one look at the restaurant and one whiff of the air and knew I was in for a treat. I’m from Owensboro (the BBQ capital of the world), so I detected the scent of BBQ over all the others. And it smelled heavenly.
I was very tempted by the barbecue on the menu until I saw the Chicken and Dressing Dinner. I’m all kinds of wild about dressing, so it was a no-brainer. I live in Owensboro, after all - I can have BBQ anytime.
I had mashed potatoes, gravy, a dinner roll, and green beans with the dressing and chicken. The dressing is the star of the show with the chicken and dressing meal - and that’s just how I like it! It had the perfect amount of sage, not too much and not too little. It wasn’t too dry (I’m pretty sure there’s a place reserved in hell for cooks who make dry stuffing.) and it wasn’t too wet. I’d walk two country miles right now to have another serving.
I also loved the potatoes, green beans, sweet tea and gravy. Delicious.
However… The thing that I haven’t been able to get off my mind since leaving the Farmer’s Feed Mill Restaurant was our dessert choice. We were trying to decide between the amazing choices: Coconut Pie, Chocolate Pie, Pecan Cobbler (?!?!), and several others, when we noticed something called Coon Hunter’s Cake. Animal lover that I am, I wrinkled and scrunched my nose a la Samantha Stephens at the name (I feed and love a family of raccoons every night…) but curiousity got the better of us. Besides, we were pretty sure that no coons were harmed in the making of this cake.
When the young waiter came by to ask if we wanted dessert, my husband asked him what the Coon Hunters Cake was. He said it was like Italian Cream Cake with Pineapple. Sold!
The young man was exactly right. It was also possibly the best cake I’ve ever eaten. The cream cheese icing was sheer perfection. It was creamy and sweet with that unmistakable flavor of cream cheese. There were crumbled pecans on top that just made the smile on my face wider. The pineapple was such a perfect addition, it’s a wonder it isn’t used more frequently in cakes.
When we were leaving, one of the restaurant’s owners asked us how everything was. We raved and she told us where we could find the recipe for the Coon Hunter’s Cake. I never loved her more than I did at that moment (then again, I had just met her). Apparently, the recipe is featured in a cookbook filled with popular dishes from restaurants around Kentucky. I actually saw the cookbook on our last trip to Lake Barkley.
Rest assured I’ll be going back for this cookbook. I’ll also be going back to The Farmer’s Feed Mill Restaurant in Leitchfield, Kentucky asap. I told the Coconut Pie I’d be back for it and I’m a diner of my word.
