Can you believe it’s been 10 years since the world stood absolutely still (and teary-eyed) on that fateful September 11 morning?
Governor Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear are asking all Kentuckians to remember each of the lives lost on 9/11 with a statewide day of prayer and remembrance on Sunday, Sept. 11.
“Sunday marks ten years since the terrorist attacks that rocked our nation and took the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. It was a horrendous event in our countryââ?¬â?¢s history,” Gov. Beshear said. “Jane and I are asking every Kentuckian to join us in this day of prayer and remembrance to honor these Americans and their families on 9/11.”
The governor is also requesting that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, Sept. 11.
“It’s important for all of us to remember the men and women who lost their lives on this day back in 2001, as well as the thousands of military servicemen and women who have been fighting terrorism since that terrible day,” said First Lady Jane Beshear. “In the last ten years, our nation has continued to fight the war on terrorism at home and around the world.”
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Governor and First Lady will attend a 10-year anniversary event in Louisville at Waterfront Park on River Road.
Gov. Beshear recently joined three other governors on a visit to the Middle East to personally thank the nation’s troops for their continued patriotism and sacrifice.
“These men and women volunteer to protect our freedoms and willingly put themselves in dangerous circumstances because they believe in something bigger than themselves,” Gov. Beshear said. “They truly deserve not only our utmost respect, but also our everlasting gratitude.”
The call for a statewide day of prayer and remembrance is part of Gov. Beshear’s overall effort to pledge his support to the Commonwealth’s loyal and brave men and women through his initiative.
Veterans Day is Nov. 11, 2011 or 11-11-11. Gov. Beshear and his administration are highlighting and honoring Kentucky’s veterans through Veterans Day with this special initiative. The initiative began on Memorial Day with a ceremony in Grant County and will lead up to a Veterans Day celebration.
