Ghost Tour in Owensboro: Pictures from a Haunting Evening

October 31, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Owensboro Ghost Tour

Owensboro Ghost Tour: The Miller House

Are ghosts real? Do you believe in ghosts? Cool questions, right? And with today being Halloween, I can’t think of a better time to ask these questions.  It’s also the perfect time for a Ghost Tour!

My family and I had a great time last night at The Miller House. They ran a special where you enjoyed a meal – vegetable soup, potato chips, and a burger –  while listening to wonderful ghost stories and got to meet “Mr. and Mrs. Miller” (as they were portrayed by a couple of wonderfully entertaining hams).

Mind you, the food wasn’t up to the Miller House’s usual standards.  Their regular food is to absolutely die for (poor choice of words while talking about ghosts).  If anyone ate the burgers and soup last night who has not eaten at the Miller House before… take it from me, this was not their typical burger or cuisine.  This is actually one of the best (and most beautiful) restaurants in the entire area.

It doesn’t really matter, though, the burgers weren’t the main attraction. The atmosphere, ambiance, and stories were.  The ghost stories were told by Owensboro’s ghost expert, David Wolfe. He does a wonderful job with these tours and ghost stories.

I hope you’ll visit his website, Haunts of Owensboro, and go on his tours asap. I did not realize it at the time – I really wish I had – but you can actually tip David Wolfe at the end of the tour.  Had I known, I’d have certainly done so.  Not only did he help make our Halloween more special, he is doing a great service for our town and community.  Anything that draws people to Owensboro benefits us all.  He obviously puts a great deal of time and research into his tours and it shows.  When you go, be sure to tip!

History Buffs: You’ll Love This Tour

I’m more of a history buff than a ghost buff, and the tour absolutely fascinated me.  To learn about men and women who lived in Owensboro, Kentucky years and years ago is nothing short of fascinating. To walk in the steps they walked in and see the big beautiful houses in which they lived (and live?) made this history buff’s arm hairs stand at attention.

Did you know that the last public execution actually happened in Owensboro, Kentucky?  A new hotel (on the riverfront) is being built on the site of this execution.  The man executed was Rainey Bethea – for the murder of a 70 year old woman.  On the tour, we were shown where her house once stood – a parking lot is there now.  A gentleman in the group raised his hand and said he remembered when the execution happened. He said he wanted to go watch, but his mom wouldn’t let him.

Good call, mom.

David Wolfe has done so much research for his ghost tours and knows so much about Owensboro’s rich history. It’d be amazing if he did History Tours as well as Ghost Tours. A local museum should line him up for Historical Tours throughout the year.  No ghosts… just history.  Believe me, it’s fascinating.

Warning: If you’re easily scared or “creeped out,” you probably should stop reading now and go have a cup of tea.  Just be sure to add a little honey… maybe a squeeze of lemon…

In this post you’ll find a couple of pictures I took from the evening. The picture at the top of the post was taken in front of The Miller House at the end of the tour.  Mr. Wolfe told us about a few mysterious (and a few not so mysterious) deaths that occurred in this very home.  Apparently a gardener was murdered on the grounds one evening – and no one has any idea why.  To this day no one knows why anyone would want this man dead. Mrs. Miller is believed to have died in her beloved house.

What’s more, over the years, there were a few more deaths within the home.

It was all very interesting, whether you believe in ghosts or not.

As I said, the picture at the top was taken at the end of the tour. It was the last picture I took.  The one below was taken only a second or two before the one at the top. You can see “Mr. Miller” in the doorway and can tell he had only barely moved.

I say all of this simply to bring your attention to something in the bottom part of the picture – toward the right.  I can’t claim to know what the blur is. There was nothing on my camera lens or it would have shown up in the other pictures. I have not altered the picture or done any effects to it whatsoever.

There wasn’t anything there. There wasn’t any smoke…. nothing.  And yet…. something.

Ghost Tour of Owensboro

Sometimes all that’s left to be said is, Happy Halloween!

You’ll notice in quite a few of the pictures something ghost chasers call “orbs” – little inexplicable circles of light (energy… whatever you want to call them).  They claim that these orbs are evidence of spirits or ghosts. Again, whether you’re a skeptic or believe in ghosts, you have to admit, the orbs were all over the place in a few of these pictures.

You’ll notice a big beautiful yellow home in the second and third pictures.  The present owner defined what Kentucky hospitality is all about. He brought out a big bowl of candy and let us all get our chocolate fix. Instant hero.

New Category: Facts About Kentucky

October 29, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kentucky FactsRegular readers will notice a huge change here on Genuine Kentucky. As I told a friend in e-mail this morning, it was time for a change!  I actually wanted to make the website and Kentucky blog easier to read and use on mobile devices (iPhones, iPad Touches, Kindles, Laptops, etc.).  The new look should allow you to pull up Genuine Kentucky anywhere, anytime, and find the information you’re looking for.  It should be easier than ever for you to share all of our Kentucky pictures and pictures of the day with others on Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter – and we certainly hope you’ll do just that.

I’m also adding a few new categories and re-vamping a couple of old ones.  I honestly cherish our readers and visitors to this website and want to keep things fresh and fun for you.

One of the new categories I’m launching is primarily due to the fact that a similar category was such a hit.  I’ve had so many people tell me that they get a big kick out of the Random Facts About Kentucky State Parks feature on the website.  So, I’m starting one today that’ll include facts about Kentucky.

A few of the other categories that are getting re-worked and revitalized are:

  • Kentucky Food
  • Kentucky History
  • Kentucky Restaurants Reviews– I’m going back and editing old restaurant reviews to reflect changes in the restaurant. Some good, some not so good, and some downright disappointing.

I’ll be adding a lot more Kentucky recipes and Kentucky food reviews on a regular basis.  We also have a lot of plans for adding more articles about Kentucky history, Kentucky during the Civil War, and fascinating facts about the history of our fascinating state.

I’m still putting the finishing touches on some things on the website, so if you come across anything that looks screwy, please be patient. I’ve put on a second pot of coffee and am working like a woman on a mission – which I am, I guess.

Thanks again for visiting Genuine Kentucky – you truly honor us with your visits. Now back to coffee and back to work….

The Miller House Restaurant in Owensboro: More Than Just A Pretty Face

October 28, 2012 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

The Miller House in Owensboro, Ky

The Miller House in Owensboro, Kentucky

If you ask me about my favorite Kentucky Restaurants, be prepared for an impressive run-down. We have a lot of wonderful restaurants in Kentucky and I’m always proud and anxious to tell people about the best of the best.  Since I call Owensboro Home, Sweet Home, I’m even more proud when the restaurant is right here in the River City.

The gorgeous restaurant you see pictured above is one of Owensboro Kentucky’s finest restaurants.  This is The Miller House and I can’t wait to give you a virtual introduction.

The Miller House, as you can see, looks like a beautiful old house.  There’s a great reason for this – it IS a beautiful old house!

From The Miller House.com:

“It will be a Model of Beauty, Elegance and Convenience Throughout”

This quote, as written in the Messenger Inquirer in the summer of 1905, described the plans for the elaborate home of Elmer and Lizzy Miller located at Fifth and Lewis (now JR Miller BLVD). In 1905, Elmer Miller obtained a mold by Sears, Roebuck, and Company to make 1,800 artificial stone blocks for his home. He hauled sand for the blocks up the Ohio River during construction. Referred to as the prettiest and most conveniently arranged in the city, this $8,000 home displayed beveled glass windows, magnificent woods, mantels with tile hearths, and combination of electric and gas light fixtures….

Several changes have taken place over the years.  Renovations have been made, ownership has changed hands a few times, and (most dramatically) the beautiful home was hit hard from the tornado of 2007 that tore through our beautiful downtown.  Windows blew out and a tree was uprooted – landing on the roof!

A lot of love and a lot of pride restored this beautiful, historic home and it shows. Today, the Miller’s House is The Miller House and it is still a model of beauty and elegance throughout.

The Miller House, Owensboro

On a recent trip to The Miller House, Michael and I were reminded of just how special this restaurant is.  The trip also reminded me of something else: The tone a restaurant sets with its appearance and host/hostess.  The Miller House’s tone is set the minute you walk up the sidewalk. The sight of the stately house and meticulously manicured lawn set the stage for what’s inside.

As soon as you walk through the doors, you realize that the tone set on the lawn was just the opening act. The interior is so beautiful it stops you in your tracks.  Different rooms of the house are dining rooms. The one we ate in happened to be the original house’s parlor.  Because of the layout, diners are able to eat in peace and privacy. The only sound(s) we heard were wonderful songs from the 40’s as they played quietly in the background.  I’m over the moon wild about old music, so I was in perfect Heaven.

The hostess and server were perfect for the restaurant. The hostess was very warm with a southern charm that fit The Miller House to perfection.  Our server, Bryan, was equally wonderful. Incredibly warm, friendly, and – truth be told – one of the best servers we’ve had anywhere. Any time. Friendly, warm, knowledgeable, and an attribute to the entire experience. Many restaurant managers underestimate the importance of their staff.  They’ll give their complete attention to decor, menu, Facebook, and promotions and fail to realize their most valuable assets are right there in front of them.

Hosts and servers can make or break a restaurant. They should be chosen carefully and great ones should be treated like gold.  If they aren’t great, look for ones who are.… then treat them so well you never lose them!

We ordered iced tea (which was amazing, by the way) and were served a plate of Sweet Potato Biscuits and real butter (pictured below). They were ideal for the season (Autumn), very southern, and outstandingly delicious. I love restaurants that serve bread, compliments of the house. When a restaurant does that, I don’t mind the cost of tea so much.  Giving your guests Sweet Potato Biscuits and butter simply for visiting you isn’t just beautifully southern, it’s good business.  Everyone wants to feel welcome after all.

Sweet Potato Biscuits at The Miller House

My husband ordered us the Southern Sampler Platter (pictured below) as an appetizer. When I’m going to be writing a review for a restaurant, the more we’re able to sample, the better. And, let me tell you, it doesn’t get any better than the appetizers at The Miller House!

The Southern Sampler Consists Of:

  • Southern Cheese Torte with Crackers
  • Fried Grit Sticks
  • Sweet Potato Chips
  • Zesty Cheese Straws
  • Fried Green Tomatoes

Michael’s favorite part of the sampler was the Southern Cheese Torte. I’ll never forget the look on his face after one bite.  Or should I say, after each bite.  As all cheese lovers know, there’s a huge difference between good cheese and great cheese and you can taste it. Literally.

My favorites were the fried grit sticks, sweet potato chips, and fried green tomatoes. A lot of restaurants (with chefs unfamiliar with Kentucky food, I suppose) totally blow fried green tomatoes. I’ve run into a few experiences when I felt like leaving a message, along with the tip: “Please take the fried green tomatoes off of the menu, you’re giving them a bad name.”  I haven’t done it yet, but I’ve come thisclose.

The fried green tomatoes at The Miller House were perfection. They were coated and fried just right. Not close to right…. not almost there… they were just right. Absolute delicious. I’ve never had fried grits before, but after having The Miller House’s Fried Grit Sticks, I can’t wait to have them again!  They were so ridiculously wonderful. They make a fun… and, again… deliciously southern menu item.

The Sweet potato chips were also out of this world.  I’d say about 4 out of 5 restaurants overcook their house chips. I always wonder how they can’t know that you take them out before they’re brown, not after.  Anyway, you don’t have to worry about the people in The Miller House’s restaurant missing a beat. Like everything else, the sweet potato chips were amazing.

Other Appetizers on The Miller House’s Menu:

  • Fried Green Tomatoes with Roasted Red Pepper Coulis
  • Shrimp Scampi Skewer
  • Soup Du Jour
  • Warm Spinach and Parmesan Dip
  • Fried Mushrooms
  • Blue Cheese And Brie Wedges With Pear, Apple And Brown Sugar Compote (Warm blue cheese and brie wedges topped with a pear, apple and brown sugar compote.)
  • Mussels In Fennel And White Wine Cream Sauce

Personally, I can’ t wait to try their Fried Green Tomatoes with Roasted Red Pepper Coulis and I’m dying to see what they do with Spinach and Parmesan Dip.  I haven’t included the prices with the menu items because, over the years, the prices may change. However, click the following link for the prices of the appetizers – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The prices at The Miller House aren’t just fair, they’re shockingly fair.

The Miller House's Southern Sampler, Off the Appetizer Menu

The Main Event: The Meal!

I am, as you may know, the biggest catfish fanatic in the world. I danced in my seat when I saw fried catfish fillets on the menu.  These outstandingly delicious fried catfish fillets (pictured below) were served with a spicy remoulade that blew my mind.  Completely.  Just as I was coming to terms with the deliciousness of the catfish and the remoulade, I took a bite of what is (unquestionably) the best coleslaw in the world.  It’s more delicious than coleslaw has a right to be and I told it so. My picture is positioned in a way that kind of hides the coleslaw. There’s more of it than appears in the picture and words fail me when it comes to telling you how amazing it is.

The catfish was juicy, deliciously breaded, and perfectly fried.  It was excellent and even more delicious than it looks in the picture.

Even the  fresh cut fries (also included in the catfish meal) were fantastic! In fact, they might be the best fries in Owensboro…. or Kentucky.

The Miller House Fried Catfish, Colelaw and Fries

Michael ordered the House-made meatloaf with demi-glaze, Yukon gold mashed potatoes and sauteed green beans (pictured below). Each were also amazing.  I could have eaten a bucket of the mashed potatoes and could have coated my arm in the demi-glaze and licked it off.I’m certain you couldn’t order anything that didn’t make your jaw drop in The Miller House.

You can order a house or Caesar Salad to your meal for just a few dollars more.

Other foods on the menu are listed in great detail (including the shockingly fair prices) here:  The Miller House Menu. Be sure to click on each of the items – the catfish is found under “For the Lighter Appetite.”

You MUST check out the  Sunday Brunch menu as well.  Here, allow me to whet your appetite:  Chicken and Waffles, Stuffed French Toast, Fried Catfish Fillets, Breakfast Hash, The Miller House Breakfast (Two eggs cooked your style and served with bacon or sausage, cheddar grits or hashbrown casserole and biscuit or toast), biscuits and gravy, Steak and Eggs, Southern Eggs Benedict, Southern Fried Chicken Salad, and a lot more!

Now they’re just showing off.

If you’re looking for one of the best restaurants in Kentucky, you now know its name.

Picture of the Day: Panther Creek Park in Owensboro

October 26, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Autumn Trees

A friend of my husband’s recently visited us here in Owensboro, Kentucky for a few days. Like me, one of this friend’s hobbies is photography. Truth be told, he actually makes money with his photography, which I suppose makes him  a legitimate “photographer,” while I’m just sitting here like, “Oh, Look! I got a shot of a goose in flight!”

I’m just so professional like that.

Michael wanted to take his friend to Panther Creek Park (a real treat for photographers, professional or otherwise) but they ran out of time.  It’s an absolute shame because, like a lot of places in Kentucky, Panther Creek Park  and cameras were made for one another.

Click the thumbnails below for larger pictures of Panther Creek Park.

I just added a new photo gallery to the Owensboro album, dedicated to this very special place.  See Panther Creek Park Pictures for more great pictures.  And, yes… I caught a goose in  flight. Yay, me!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and, in the case of Kentucky, I’d say that’s 100 percent true.  We could use up all the words in the English language (and even borrow some from other languages), but we could never truly describe how beautiful or special our beloved state is.

You’ll have to just see for yourself in our growing collection of pictures of Kentucky! Also, be sure to check out our Pictures of the Day.
