U.S. Highway 23, Better Known as Country Music Highway

April 28, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

U.S. Highway 23, which runs through eastern Kentucky (from Greenup to Letcher County) is known as “Country Music Highway.”

The Kentucky Tourism Cabinet designated it Country Music Highway because of the impressive number of Country Music stars that have come from this region. More stars of Country Music have come from this one region than any other area of the United States.  Pretty impressive, right?

These stars include…

  • Loretta Lynn
  • Billy Ray Cyrus
  • Tom T. Hall
  • Naomi and Wynonna Judd
  • Keith Whitley
  • Ricky Skaggs
  • Patty Loveless
  • Crystal Gayle
  • Dwight Yokum
  • Hylo Brown
  • Gary Stewart

To learn more about Country Music Highway’s history, attractions, events, and stars, check out Country Music Highway.

Pictures of a Beautiful Little Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

April 27, 2015 by Joi Sigers 5 Comments

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak

Thanks to an AWESOME bird feeding stand my youngest son-in-law made for me this year, we had visitors to our yard we’d never had in the past – Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks.

When I first looked out my kitchen window and saw one happily eating away, I kind of froze – I couldn’t take my eyes off the vividly colorful little beauty. I finally grabbed my camera and took a few pictures. These were taken through my kitchen window, so the pictures aren’t the least bit clear.

You can, however, get a good idea just how beautiful this bird is.

Whenever I say the words, “Rose-Breasted Grosbeak,” I feel like a friend of Jane Hathaway’s from an episode of Beverly Hillbillies – the nerdy birdwatcher.

It’d be so much easier on me if this bird was named something that sounded less “bird nerd” – like Diane or Saul.

At any rate, apparently this migratory bird has already passed through Owensboro, Kentucky because I haven’t seen any at any of our feeders for about three days. Naturally, as soon as my camera is on standby, they’ve moved on.

The thrill we got from seeing a new breed (new to us, anyway!) up close and personal was a great reminder to mix things up at your birdfeeders every now and again. Offer different seeds and different types of feeders.  Some birds prefer ground feeding (robins), some prefer hanging feeders (sparrows, finches), and some (like my new friend the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak) seem to prefer a “raised” feeder.

Then there are doves, blackbirds, and cardinals who will pretty much go wherever the seed takes them.

The feeder Rusty built for me offers something for all birds – there’s a raised feeder, hooks for hanging feeders, finch feeders, and hummingbird feeders, and even a couple of spots for squirrel corn.

This bird and squirrel lover is going to have an especially fun summer.

I apologize for the pictures being fuzzy, it’s next to impossible to get a clear picture through glass.

Vintage Baseball Game at Waveland

April 25, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Vintage Baseball at Waveland

The Norwood Highlanders – in Vintage Baseball Uniforms!

The baseball fanatic in me gets a huge kick out of this upcoming Kentucky event.

Waveland State Historic Site in Lexington will host a vintage baseball game on Sunday, May 17, between the Losantiville Black Stockings and the Norwood Highlanders. You and your family can enjoy a day of history, food and most important of all…  the good old American pastime – baseball – as it was in the 1860s!

The players will dress in accurately-recreated uniforms, with equipment made only to standards of the period. They will use the rules, customs and terminology of baseball’s earliest days, which will add to the historical fun.

The game starts at 2 p.m. Tickets for adults are $5, children ages 7-12 are $1 and children 6 and under are free. Tickets include a walking tour of the historic home.

Waveland State Historic Site is located at 225 Waveland Museum Lane, near the corner of Man O’ War and Nicholasville Road.

Waveland State Historic Site is an antebellum house on the edge of Lexington. Tours are offered Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m. with the last tour starting at 4 p.m. The site is closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission for the tours is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for students; children 6 and under are free.

Waveland is also available for weddings and other special events. For more information on Waveland Old Home Week or to book an event, call Charla Reed at 859-272-3611.

Nifty Fifties Dinner and Show on May 1, 2015

Nifty Fifties at Rough River 2015

If you’ve read Genuine Kentucky very long, you know that I am all about the Kentucky State Parks. You have also probably guessed that I have my favorites. I won’t lie… I do!

Granted there are quite a few favorites, but there are some that stand out to me – a select group that I never want to leave and can’t wait to go back.  Rough River Dam State Resort Park is most definitely in this select group.  Due to its location, it’s one of the quieter state parks – which, in my opinion, only adds to its appeal.

The lake is gorgeous, the people couldn’t be friendlier, and there’s always something to see and do.

They actually have a fun Nifty Fifties Dinner and Show coming up on May 1 – “Be Bop A Lula.”  The show will take place in the Conference Center – tickets are $10 per adult. Call the lodge for the time 1-800-325-1713.

The Dinner Buffet is served in the Park’s Grayson’s Landing Restaurant and is available from 4:30 – 8:00.  The buffet is not, however, included in the ticket price.
