Wheatless: Gluten Free Restaurant in Bowling Green!

June 30, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Wheatless Mushroom Swiss Burger and Onion Rings

Wheatless Mushroom Swiss Burger and Onion Rings

There are restaurant reviews I’m happy to write about, then there are restaurant reviews I am thrilled to write about. Count this review of Wheatless in Bowling Green among the “thrilled” reviews.

Whether you have to eat gluten free (like moi) or, for health conscious reasons, choose to eat gluten free all or most of the time… Wheatless is going to leave you just as speechless as it did me.

Heck, even if you have never even thought about the phrase gluten free – let alone followed the restricted diet – Wheatless will blow you away.

Excellent food does that after all.

Back when I could eat gluten/wheat, one of my favorite things on the planet was the Mushroom Swiss Burger at Hardee’s, so when I saw the Mushroom Swiss Burger on the menu at Wheatless, my plan was set.

When you order one of their burgers or sandwiches, you get your choice of a side.  Another of my pre-gluten free obsessions were onion rings, so when I saw them on the menu, I practically sang the words to the adorable girl behind the counter.

Michael ordered the Down Under Chicken Sandwich (chicken, bacon, mushrooms, cheese, honey mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions) and a side of Macaroni and Cheese. He also added a side of Cheesy Bacon Potatoes to our order because he’s my hero.

Wheatless: Bowling Green’s First Gluten Free Restaurant

When I know I’ll be writing a review, I love to try as many different menu items as possible. Most of the time (as is certainly the case with Wheatless), I know I’ll be going back often enough to try the rest!

Before getting to the actual review, I just want to say that this type of restaurant is both a blessing and a dream come true to people like me, my oldest daughter, and the many other people who have to eat a gluten free diet.  For so many of us, even a crumb can lead to days of pain and sickness. Yes… one crumb.

Serious business.

So, to have a restaurant where you have zero fears of cross contamination, zero questions like, “Well, the menu says this is gluten free, but what if it’s on the same griddle as food that isn’t…”

No worries. No fears. The only question? What do I eat first?!

Everything was so uncommonly delicious, the only way to do this review is to take it one thing at a time.

Wheatless Mushroom Swiss Hamburger and Gluten Free Onion Rings

Delicious Mushroom Swiss Burger and Onion Rings

The Mushroom Swiss Burger

First of all, the buns at Wheatless are simply outstanding. They aren’t just the best gluten free bread I’ve ever had – they are the best hamburger buns I’ve ever had, period. They were perfectly lightly grilled – leaving them warm but soft enough to enjoy each bite along with the delicious burger.

The burger, itself, was extra special. It certainly didn’t taste like any burger you can get out anywhere. It was just an excellent burger and I thoroughly enjoyed and celebrated every bite. We won’t tell Hardee’s, but it blew their Mushroom Swiss Burger out of the water.

Wheatless (Bowling Green, Ky) Mushroom and Swiss Burger and Onion Rings

Gluten Free Onion Rings Mean a Renewed Obsession

The Onion Rings

If you’ve read many of my restaurant reviews, you know that I used to be obsessed with onion rings – to the point of insanity.  I could have gone to the swankiest restaurant in the world and only raved about their onion rings (if, that is, they were rave-worthy).

Thanks to Wheatless, the insane obsession is back! These gluten free onion rings blew my mind. In fact, they’re blowing it again right now, just remembering them. They smelled like Heaven to this onion ring fanatic – as soon as they were put in front of me, I nearly melted out of my seat. Appearance and taste-wise, they remind me a great deal of the legendary Bloomin’ Onion at Outback.

Except I can eat these!

In fact, I personally think these onion rings are better than any Bloomin’ Onion I’ve ever had – or any onion rings for that matter.  They’re perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked.

It’s like Santa came early.

As I sat there in front of a Mushroom Swiss Burger and Onion Rings, I was very much like a kid on Christmas morning… with “toys” I was convinced I’d never have.

Cheesy Bacon Potatoes

Cheesy Bacon Potatoes

Cheesy Bacon Potatoes

One word… bacon. I love it when restaurants have plenty of options for sides. Unfortunately, most don’t, do they? They’ll offer you onion rings, fries, or coleslaw.  At Wheatless, your choice of sides for lunch or dinner are…

  • Cheesy Bacon Potatoes
  • Mac and Cheese
  • Onion Rings
  • Fries
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Steamed Vegetables

The cheesy bacon potatoes were extra delicious, but surprisingly enough, I’ll tell you something that was even more delicious.. the Mac and Cheese.

Wheatless Down Under Chicken Sandwich and Mac and Cheese
Down Under Chicken Sandwich with Mac and Cheese

Macaroni and Cheese

Holy cats, the Mac and Cheese was so out of this world delicious it made my jaw drop. I kept having to pick it back up off the floor after each bite. I’ve never had better mac and cheese ever – with gluten or without.

It is just exceptionally, spectacularly, uncommonly delicious and that’s all I have to say about that.

Creamy, delicious, warm, and wonderful. I guess it wasn’t all I had to say after all.

The Down Under Chicken Sandwich

I was glad Michael ordered a chicken sandwich because I was anxious to taste their chicken. You can tell a lot about a restaurant simply by tasting their chicken – if it’s bland, it’s a sign the cook’s heart isn’t in it. If it’s flavorful and could, if it had to, stand on its own – creating a delicious experience all by itself – then you know the cook is in it to win it.

This chicken was rockin’ the Casbah.  It was delicious and so was the honey mustard.

Michael eats a lot of chicken sandwiches, so when he said, “This is the best chicken sandwich I’ve had in a very long time,” I only had one thing to say… gimme a bite.

He was right on the money.

Seriously, every bite we had was memorable and worth writing home about.

Wheatless Lemon Blossoms

Deliciously Lemony Lemon Blossoms

Gluten Free Mixes, Croutons, Pizza Crust, Bread, Cookies…

I also love the fact that they have a lot of different gluten free mixes (Pancake Mix, Flour Blend, Fish Breading), breads, and desserts for sale.  They even sell big, beautiful gluten free pizza crusts!

On this trip, I tried to reign myself in. I bought a bag of Lemon Blossoms and one bite told me I’d made an excellent decision.

Have you ever had the Lemon Loaf Slices at Starbucks? Oh, man, I fondly remember them. These Lemon Blossoms remind me of those Heavenly beauties – but with the delicious sugar glaze all over each blossom. Ridiculously delicious.

On my next trip, I’m going to grab the Fish Breading, some of their buns, a pizza crust, and more lemon blossoms.

I’ve decided not to reign myself in next time.

Wheatless Gluten Free Mixes

Gluten Free Mixes, Pizza Crusts, and Desserts

Vegetarians will also find Wheatless to be a dream come true, as will people who have to follow their own restrictive diets due to health concerns. Their menu is clearly marked and easy to follow – you can find plenty of wonderful things to eat while dodging your own personal allergens.

In addition to the delicacies raved about above, Wheatless also has…

  • BBQ Roadhouse Burger (beef, bbq, fried onion, cheese, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, pickle)
  • Portabella Burger (portabella mushroom, Swiss cheese, spinach, sauteed onions and peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles)
  • Kona Chicken (chicken, ham, Swiss cheese, pineapple, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles)
  • Club Sandwich (ham and turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onion)
  • Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich (pulled pork, pickles)
  • BLT Sandwich (fried bacon, lettuce, tomatoes)
  • Potato Soup
  • Vegetable Soup
  • Cobb Salad
  • Southwestern Salad
  • Summer Salad
  • Chicken Noodle Soup
  • AND MORE!!! All. Gluten. Free.

Wheatless Also Offers Breakfast!

The breakfast menu at Wheatless sounds as extraordinary and delicious as the lunch/dinner menu is. Here’s a small sampling:

  • Omelettes
  • Toaster Sandwiches
  • French Toast
  • Banana Nut Pancakes
  • Pancakes with Chocolate Chips, Chocolate Syrup, and Whipped Topping
  • Eggs
  • Bacon
  • Sausage
  • Country Ham

Wait. Chocolate Chip Pancakes with Chocolate Syrup and Whipped Topping? That is everything that is good and pure and decent in the world.

Next time.

I 110% recommend you head to Wheatless in Bowling Green for your next meal (or meals… heck there are plenty of places to shop, make a day of it!). Whether you have to eat gluten free or simply love GREAT food, this will quickly become one of your all-time favorite restaurants.

Read more about Wheatless on their website and check out their great menu. I’m just so excited to actually have a gluten free restaurant within reach!

Be sure to tell everyone you know all about Wheatless – especially the gluten free crowd. Like I said before, this is really and truly a blessing for us, and a delicious one, at that.

Delicious Kentucky Food Haul from The Hitching Post and Old Country Store

June 25, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hitching Post and Old Country Store Elderberry Jam, Southern Sweet Tea Jelly, and Pure Honey

Sweet Haul from the Hitching Post and Old Country Store, Aurora

When it comes to Kentucky food, Kentucky products, and keeping our money in the state by supporting our neighbors, I don’t just step up on the soapbox, I leap on it ninja style.

I have a hundred and one things to do today, though, so you’ll be spared the song and dance.

This time.

I do want to tell you about a wonderful little haul we brought back with us on a recent trip to The Hitching Post & Old Country Store: Elderberry Jam, Pure Honey, and (a new obsession) Southern Sweet Tea Jelly.

I live for sweet tea, so I honestly feel like this one was made specifically for me.

Elderberry Jam is one of Michael’s favorite things, and he’s been enjoying it on toast like it’s his job.   I’ll be making cornbread tomorrow night and he’ll, no doubt, cover several pieces with this delicious jam.

Honey is something we go through a lot in our kitchen. We put it in hot tea and oatmeal, on biscuits and cornbread, and I use it in lots of recipes. This Pure Honey is simply the best – plain and simple.

I have to admit that I’m completely fascinated with the Southern Sweet Tea Jelly. It’s fantastic and, to be perfectly honest, I’m in love with the charming label.  And get this, it’s made especially for The Hitching Post. If you were to buy jars of it for loved ones this Christmas, odds are it’ll be as unique to them as a unicorn wearing a sweater.

Somehow it honestly tastes like delicious sweet tea. Given the fact that the first two ingredients are tea and sugar, it shouldn’t blow me completely away, and yet it does. I guess the novelty of the idea is the part I can’t wrap my head around.

How did anyone ever even think of something so perfect?!

Each Christmas, some of my favorite cookies are the Thumbprint Cookies I make with the wonderful different jams and jellies from The Hitching Post & Old Country Store.  This year is going to be extra special with “Sweet Tea Thumbprint Cookies.”

{Continued Below…}

Moonshine Mixers and Moonshine Jelly at The Hitching Post

Moonshine Jelly Would Make Interesting Cookies Too!

I also wanted to take this chance to give a little extra clarity about these extraordinary stores. We’ve sat on the front porch of The Hitching Post during our last 3 or 4 visits, eating homemade fudge and drinking cold vintage soft drinks we bought in The Hitching Post.

Quite a few times, we overheard, then helped, tourists wondering which way they should go.  Each time they were “out of staters”  who simply didn’t know which store they should go in or which one they should go in first.

My answer? You can’t go wrong either way!

{Continued Below…}

The Hitching Post in Aurora, a legendary Kentucky Lake attraction!

The Hitching Post: A Legendary Kentucky Lake Attraction

The Hitching Post (pictured above) is home to countless mementos, Kentucky crafts, souvenirs, jewelry, t-shirts, vintage soft drinks, homemade fudge, candy, soap, whimsical gifts, and….. well… a little bit of everything for kids of ALL ages.

It’s just one smile after the next and one giggle on top of the other.

When you pull onto the property and park, The Hitching Post is on the right (when you’re facing the stores).

On the left is, essentially, a step back in time – to a beautiful, simpler time that’ll come alive in both your mind and heart the minute you step on the porch. The Old Country Store is packed with nostalgia, antiques, and vintage gifts. It really kind of defies description because most of us who LOVE nostalgia could never even hope for anyplace quite like it.

{Continued Below…}

Old Country Store in Aurora, Kentucky (Beside The Hitching Post)

Old Country Store: Sweet Nostalgia, Everywhere You Look!

The Old Country Store is truly a one-of-a-kind place that, again, kids of all ages will get a huge kick out of. If you love vintage candy, toys, games, dishes, books, and other items… be warned, you’ll never want to leave.

They even have coffee!

Mere feet separate the two stores – which is a good thing because I always find myself walking back and forth between the two.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a Spinach Artichoke Dip to make, Kroger to visit, cats to feed, and Southern Sweet Tea Jelly to spread on the nearest non-cat thing that presents itself.

Rough River Lake State Resort Park Gets Sassy!

June 22, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Rough River Lake T-Shirt
You Can’t Argue with That!
My husband, Michael (@MikeSigers), and I spent Sunday afternoon at Rough River Dam State Resort Park and had what could only be called a perfect, beautiful, and relaxing day.

Like all days spent at Rough River Lake and its beautiful state park.

The t-shirt above caught my eye and gave us a laugh. I love it when Rough River puts on its sassy pants!

I’ll add the pictures we took to Genuine Kentucky tomorrow morning. As you’d imagine, there are plenty and they’re all beautiful – not because of me, but because of the park.

Blonde Bigfoot Sighting in Ohio County…

June 22, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Cool Tree

I have a confession to make – hopefully you won’t write me off as a nutjob! – but I am obsessed with all things Bigfoot. You bet I believe they exist! I just don’t think there are nearly as many as some people believe there are.

Whew. If you’re still reading, you haven’t written me off as a squirrel. Thank you for that. I guess now isn’t the time to bring up mermaids, is it?

Okay, back to Bigfoot. There was a recent Bigfoot sighting in Ohio County – a blonde Bigfoot, no less.  You can click the following link to read all about it: Blonde Bigfoot Sighted in Ohio County, Kentucky – GREAT stuff!

Things to do this Weekend in Kentucky’s Beautiful Land Between the Lakes

June 18, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Oxen at The Homeplace (Land Between the Lakes)

Oxen at The Homeplace, Land Between the Lakes

The following press release (from the LBL) will show you just how much is going on in the Land Between the Lakes this weekend!

Saturday, June 20

10am-12pm – Barn Loom Weaving – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM

Program included with HP admission. Middle class farms strived to be as self-sufficient as possible; sheep, flax, and cotton were raised, processed, and spun into yarn and thread. Like the 1850’s farm children, lend a hand beating the threads into place or help wind the weft on a shuttle.

1-3pm – Chair Weaving – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM
Program included with HP admission. Ideal for home educators.
Today on the farm we will be weaving durable, new seats for the farm chairs with the strong, fibrous hickory bark we harvested last month. Come see how a herringbone pattern seat is woven and experience a true old- time tradition.

2-2:45pm – Slimy Science – NATURE STATION
Program included with NS admission. *Ideal for home educators.
Did you ever wonder how some reptiles and amphibians can hear with no ears? Or how to tell if a turtle is a boy or girl? Come face-to-face with some slimy and scaly critters as we investigate these and other questions through fun activities and demonstrations.

{Continued beneath the sunset!}

Sunset on the Water

Sunset on Honker Lake (from a Canoe Trip we recently enjoyed!)

6:30-9pm – Sunset Kayak Trip – NATURE STATION
$20 per canoe. Participants must be age 13 or above. Cost does not include NS admission. NS closes at 5pm. Registration limited. Reservation required. Call 270-924-2020 to reserve your space. Join us for a relaxed paddle as we explore the nooks and crannies of a Lake Barkley scenic bay. We will search the waters and shorelines for wildlife such as osprey, eagles, beavers, egrets, frogs, and songbirds.

5:30 & 7pm – Laser Light Shows – GOLDEN POND PLANETARIUM
Listen to your favorite retro, country, pop, or classic rock artists as laser lights dance across the 40-foot theater dome. Even if you have seen our laser shows before, you have never seen them like this. Our new laser projector makes them more amazing! All seats $7. Also, see Laser Shows Tue. & Fri. evenings

Sunday, June 21

1-3:30pm – Let’s Play & Ice Cream Treat – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM
Program included with HP admission. *Ideal for home educators.
When there was leisure time in 1850, children played with homemade toys or enjoyed games. Today, let’s jump rope, throw washers, and toss corncob darts. Then let’s have some ice cream, but wait in 1850, so there’s a little work involved before anyone could enjoy that special summer treat. Take your turn at the ice cream bucket and we all can enjoy the reward.

2-2:30pm – Batty for Bats – NATURE STATION
Program free with NS admission. *Ideal for Home Educators.
Let’s get a little batty as we learn about one of nature’s most fascinating, but unfamiliar creatures, bats! Meet “Betty the Old Bat,” who will teach you a fun bat song and challenge you with some bat trivia. Finally, step outside to look and listen for live bats roosting in our backyard bat boxes.
