Ancient Bison Display At Big Bone Lick State Historic Site

July 30, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

A new “Ancient Bison” exhibit has been added to the interpretive displays at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site in Boone County, Kentucky.

The hulking beast depicted in the new diorama, Bison antiquus, was the precursor to the modern bison of our time. The ancient bison was about 25 percent larger than modern bison, weighed as much as 3,500 pounds and stood up to 7.5 feet tall at the top of the hump.

As is the case with virtually all of the Ice Age mammals represented at the park, the ancient bison was drawn in large herds to the site by the alluring saline breezes that arose from the locale’s salt and sulfur springs and wafted out over the prehistoric landscape. Ancient Bison Display at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site

Funding for the exhibit was made possible through the efforts of the Friends of Big Bone who raised money through a combination of matching grants and private donations. The exhibit was designed and installed by the exhibit team of the Cincinnati Museum Center.

The park also has a modern day herd of bison that guests can watch.

Big Bone Lick is a virtual Ice Age showcase and is regarded the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology. In addition to the exhibits featured in the museum and visitor center, the park is also home to a campground, hiking and nature study trails, annual special events including the long-running Salt Festival, as well as seasonal recreational activities and interpreter-led programs.

Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is located near Union, in northern Kentucky. Take Exit 171 off Interstate 75 and follow signs along Highway 338, approximately 7 miles to the park.

Maggie’s Jungle Golf: Probably the Funnest Miniature Golf Course in the Country

July 25, 2016 by Joi Sigers 1 Comment

Maggie's Jungle Golf - Pink Flamingo Ever Get the Feeling You’re Being Watched?
If you’re looking for something fun (and inexpensive) to do at Kentucky Lake, I’d like to tell you (and show you) all about one of my personal favorites: Maggie’s Jungle Golf. This is the most colorful, funnest, and one-of-a-kind miniature golf courses I’ve ever seen. Kids, adults, and everything in between will love every minute on this beautiful mini course.

Maggie's Jungle Golf at Kentucky Lake
Gorgeous Miniature Golf Course with Tons of Shade
I’ve tried to capture as much of it’s fun and beauty in these pictures, but it’s something you absolutely have to see for yourself.

The cost of a great round of miniature golf is just $4 (all ages). Trust me, it’s worth every penny.

The miniature golf course is very shady, which keeps it from feeling as hot as a lot of mini golf courses feel. With the hot summers we’re familiar with here in Kentucky, it’s a feature I couldn’t possibly love any more than I do.

The owners of Maggie’s Jungle Golf obviously take great pride and enjoyment in this Kentucky Lake landmark – it shows, literally, every step of the way.  Not only is the mini golf course, itself, both challenging and fun, but you’ll have extra fun looking up, down, and all around. The lengths they’ve gone to create a fantasy world for kids of all ages is nothing short of amazing.

Next time you visit Kentucky Lake, be sure to carve out time for a little Jungle Love. It might just be the favorite part of your trip.

Kentucky Lake and Kenlake Marina (Pictures of the Day)

July 21, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kenlake Marina at Kentucky Lake
There are countless peaceful and relaxing get-aways in Kentucky – no matter what part of the state you’re in, you can find a beautiful place to get away from all the cares and worries of the world.

Yes, even politics and EVEN the constant stream of bad news.

The Kentucky State Parks are ideal for mini retreats – whether it’s for a few hours or a few days (at the Resort Parks).

Kenlake State Resort Park, which sits right on beautiful Kentucky Lake, is one of the first parks that comes to mind when I think “peaceful getaway.” Within minutes of the Land Between the Lakes, Willow Pond Catfish, and The Hitching Post, Kenlake State Resort Park is close enough to everything you need – yet (when you’re ready to unwind again), it provides you a blissful escape.

August is Hummingbird Month at Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes

July 19, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hummingbird at the Nature Station in the LBL
I have been fascinated by all birds since I was barely able to walk. They’re just as fascinating today as they were then – many, many, many moons ago. Hummingbirds (my dad’s absolute favorite bird) are always a special joy for bird lovers, aren’t they? Unfortunately, in the grand scheme of time, they aren’t around long at all. In fact, if your experience is like mine has been this year, it’s going to be even shorter because the little beauties seemed particularly late in arriving this year.

Like all good bird watching nerds, I keep a bird journal and they weren’t just days late, they were weeks late!

Next month, August, is actually peak hummingbird viewing season in many parts of the region, including the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

Hundreds of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds rest and fuel up in the gardens and feeders at Woodlands Nature Station for their migratory journey south. Nature Station naturalists present special hummingbird programs throughout August included with regular admission to the Nature Station:  $5 ages 13 and older, $3 ages 5 to 12, and free for ages 4 and younger.

Optimal hummingbird viewing begins in mid-July and lasts throughout August. The Nature Station provides a unique opportunity for up to 10 people during an Early Morning Hummingbird Photo Session. Photographers may also photograph butterflies, native wildflowers, and rescued wildlife including the red wolves and bobcat during their most active time of day. The Early Morning Hummingbird Photo Sessions begin at 9am on August 13 and 27. The cost is $10 per person. Call 270-924-2020 for reservations.

On August 20, the Nature Station opens early for Hummingbird Café. Enjoy breakfast among the native wildflower gardens and hummingbird feeding frenzy. The cost is $10 per person; call 270-924-2020 for reservations.

Nature Station visitors can enter Nature Station’s first ever Hummingbird Photo Contest by submitting a hummingbird photo taken at the Nature Station during August. Winners will have their photos displayed at Hummingbird Fest 2017. See full contest details on the web at http://www.landbetweenthelakes.us/nature-station-hummingbird-photo-contest-2016/.

Special programs offered in August include:

  • Saturday & Sunday, August 6 & 7 – 20th Anniversary Hummingbird Festival
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays at 10:30am – Morning with the Hummingbirds
  • Wednesdays at 11:30am – Hummingbirds of the World
  • Saturdays, August 13 & 27 at 9am – Exclusive: Early Morning Photo Session (reservations required)
  • Saturday, August 20 at 9am – Hummingbird Café (reservations required)
  • Sundays, August 14, 21, & 28 at 2pm – Knee-high Naturalists: Hummingbirds

“Pokemon Go” at Kentucky State Parks

July 15, 2016 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Apparently, players of the new “Pokemon Go” game are having luck catching virtual creatures at Kentucky State Parks! Just goes to show you, even virtual creatures know how fun Kentucky State Parks are.

“Pokemon Go” is a ridiculously popular game right now with people of all ages – the best thing about it is that it’s encouraging people to get out and explore as they collect virtual creatures with their Smartphone.

Naturally, visitors are welcome to play the game at state parks and historic sites, however the state parks do have a few safety guidelines.

“All we ask is that they be careful and obey a few basic rules for safety,” said state park Naturalist Robert Myers.

His suggestions for those playing the game include:

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially along trails, roadways, cliffs, streams and lakes.
  • Stay on hiking trails; do not wander off trails.
  • Be aware of park hours. Some parks close at night.
  • Do not enter private campsites or property.
  • Look up and enjoy some of the great natural and historical surroundings at state parks. You may get to see some real wildlife like a bird or deer.

Pokemon hunters have reported success at Waveland State Historic Site in Lexington, John James Audubon State Park in Henderson and Green River Lake State Park near Campbellsville.

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg is planning to have organized hunts for guests during the summer.

Pokemon Go players can also take advantage of the many events and programs at Kentucky State Parks. To find out more about lodging, camping, restaurants and other special events, visit parks.ky.gov.

You can also learn more about Kentucky State Parks and post photos of your Pokemon Go experiences on the Kentucky State Park Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram.

**** Be sure you download the OFFICIAL Pokemon Go app. I just saw a news item about a fake Pokemon Go app on Google Play infecting phones.
