Woodlands Nature Station opened early this month, so you know where I was early this month…. where any other animal and bird-obsessed person would be – right there with the animals!
I have a lot of pictures my husband and I took to add to Genuine Kentucky tomorrow, but I wanted to go ahead and post this one today. I don’t know why, but there’s just something about this picture that I love. The contentment on the faces of these beautiful animals tells me that they were as joyful about feeling the sunshine on their faces as I was on mine.
The Nature Station, in the amazing Land Between the Lakes is one of my favorite places in the world – if you’ve never been, GO! If it’s been a while since you’ve visited them, GO AGAIN!
I’ll add the rest of the pictures tomorrow. If you follow (or even just visit) our Twitter account, @GenuineKentucky, you can see the other pictures and videos we took on this trip – as well as countless pictures from around our beautiful state.

Gem Mining at Carter Caves!
If you visit Carter Caves during Pioneer Life Week (or any other week!). be sure to check out the Carter Caves Gem Mine (Pictured at the Top)? This VERY cool attraction is located at Carter Caves State Park Welcome Center Gift Shop.
From Kentucky State Parks’ Website: You can buy bags for $6.00, $8.00 and $10.00 (fossils) and begin your discoveries of real, colorful gemstones and fossils at the gemstone flume. Just place a scoop of rough material on the screen…then rinse with clean water. The gem stones, when wet, will reveal colors and crystal shapes!
There are lots of different gemstones to discover! Anything from locally-found Pyrite, Fluorite and Quartz, to Ruby, Moonstone, Topaz, Crystal Points, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Garnett, Citrine, Aventurine, Obsidian, Sodalite, Calcite and Raspberry Quartz could be found.
Sharing the experience of mining at the flume mine is a lot of fun. You can compare finds and help each other to identify what you’ve found. We invite individuals, families, and groups of all sizes. Mining is available during regular business hours of the Welcome Center Gift Shop, April through October. – Read More About Carter Caves State Resort Park on the official website.

While I love this world, I have to say it’s a trip I enjoy with every ounce of my being.
If you’ve never visited The Homeplace, I hope you’ll go as soon as possible. Go SOON and go OFTEN… I’ll probably see you there!
Coming up on April 25th and April 26th (2015), there are extra special reasons to visit The Homeplace 1850’s Farm.
First of all (leave it to an animal lover like me to mention this first), there are new adorable baby pigs on the farm! I know you won’t want to miss seeing them. Heck, the adult pigs are too cute for their own good too. The animals on the farm are very well cared for and a lot of fun to watch and photograph.
As if the pigs weren’t reason enough, The Homeplace will hold a Quilting Bee on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26. Visitors will learn more about quilting and help complete a hand-made quilt started by the farm family.
You can also visit with the blacksmith on the farm at 1 pm both days.
From 1-3pm, visit the Homeplace kitchen for sweet treats made on a wood stove. All activities will be held at the Homeplace 1850’s Farm in the Tennessee portion of Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.
“We will be piecing a replica Triple Irish Chain quilt. Everyone can add a stich or two,” says Cindy Earls, Lead Interpreter at the Homeplace. “Children can learn to quilt on a smaller frame. On Saturday, we’ll demonstrate how a quilt is put on a frame. On Sunday, visitors can help us hang a quilt in the Single Pen House.”
Visitors are encouraged to meet the new baby pigs (!!!) and wander the farm with its period animals, crops, and gardens. Historic interpreters are available to answer any questions.
Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area manages more than 170,000 acres in western Kentucky and Tennessee as part of the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture’s public lands program. Land Between The Lakes offers outdoor recreation, lake access, land management, and environmental education to over 1.4 million visitors annually. The Friends of Land Between The Lakes works in partnership with the Forest Service providing program services, funds development, and volunteer support.
