Aurora Kentucky is Going to the Dogs – Dixie Dogs!

May 25, 2009 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Dixie Dogs in Aurora Kentucky

As I mentioned in the last post, fudge is a topic (along with coffee and chocolate) that I rate myself as an expert. There’s another culinary delight that I also know inside and out: Hot Dogs! I’ve always had a special place in my heart (or maybe I should say my stomach?) for hot dogs. When my husband grills hot dogs and hamburgers, I generally take them off of the grill quicker than he can cook them.

When you wheel into the Hitching Post’s parking lot in Aurora, Kentucky – you’ll notice an adorable hot dog stand set up near the Hitching Post sign. The hot dog stand is run by a couple who have moved to the Land Between the Lakes area from Chicago. As you might guess, they make and sell delicious Chicago Style Hot Dogs. What you might not guess is that they are some of the best hot dogs that you’ll ever enjoy! They are all-beef hot dogs on a steamed poppy seed bun and you can top them off with any wonderful combination of condiments you choose. My husband goes all out, with ketchup, mustard, pickles, tomatoes, and onions. Although it earned me a “Boooo!” from one of the owners and the rest of my family – I just topped mine off with mustard and onions.

It. Was. Heavenly. The fact that the hot dog is all beef makes a huge difference, and the bread was utterly delicious. On the way home, we were all wishing we’d bought a baker’s dozen to nosh on all night!

The next time you’re down around the lakes, stop in the Hitching Post and have the best hot dog you’ll ever eat. You can get yummy cold bottled drinks inside the Hitching Post.

Little Johnny Jokes

November 24, 2008 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Here are some cute Little Johnny jokes that showed up in my e-mail. They brought a smile to my face, and I’m passing them along in the hopes that they’ll do the same for you! After all, there’s dressing to make, turkeys to thaw, dough to knead, pies to bake, company to greet, and decorations to be put up – we could use all the laughs we can get…..

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, ‘Everyone who thinks they’re stupid, stand up!’ After a few seconds, Little Johnny stood up. The teacher said, ‘Do you think you’re stupid, Little Johnny?’ ‘No, ma’am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!’

* * * * * * * * *
Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. ‘Why do you do that, mommy?’ he asked. ‘To make myself beautiful,’ said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue. ‘What’s the matter?’ asked Little Johnny. ‘Giving up?’

* * * * * * * * *
The math teacher saw that little Johnny wasn’t paying attention in class. She called on him and said, ‘Johnny! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?’ Little Johnny quickly replied, ‘NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!’

* * * * * * * * *
Little Johnny’s kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. ‘Yes,’ said the policeman. ‘The detectives want very badly to capture him.’ Little Johnny asked, ‘Why didn’t you keep him when you took his picture?’

The Hilarious Greater Tuna Show in Grand Rivers, Kentucky

July 4, 2008 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Greater Tuna !My husband and I recently had the supreme pleasure of seeing the Greater Tuna show at the Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers, Kentucky.Ã?  Unfortunately, Greater Tuna will not be shownÃ? at the Badgett PlayhouseÃ? again this year.Ã?  If it were, I’d be there right on the front row laughing my head, and who knows what, off.Ã?  However, there will be a Greater Tuna Christmas show on the following dates: November 20, November 27, December 4, December 11, and December 18.Ã?  We’ll certainly be there, coffee or hot chocolate in hand. You’ve been warned – once these guysÃ? start rolling, a couple of hot beverages will probably flow with the laughter.

Although the show we saw will not run again this year, I was very anxious to write about, not only the show, itself, but the ridiculously talented actors who brought these larger than life characters to life.  Bill Minihan and Steve Sherling have to be characters, themselves, to be able to pull this off.  They played the roles of crazy, lovable characters living in Tuna, Texas (the third smallest town in the state) and played them to absolute hilarious perfection.

After the show, as we drove home to Owensboro, I wondered how in the world these guysÃ? remembered all of their lines.Ã?  During the show, I didn’t think of them as lines or of the actors as…. well….Ã? actors.Ã?  They WERE simply the deliciously zany citizens of Tuna and we were being treated to aÃ? lookÃ? into their lives.Ã?  That is, of course, the mark of greatness in acting as well as in comedyÃ? – you don’t want the audience to sit there thinking, “Wow, he’s a great actor!” or “He’sÃ? suchÃ? a funny comedian!”Ã?  You want the audience to buy into what you’re selling them – that you aren’t an actor, you are the character.

What makes Bill Minihan and Steve Sherling extra impressive is the fact that they didn’t just pull this off with one character – they pulled it off with a town full of characters!

I’m hoping that these same two actors star in the Greater Tuna Christmas show.Ã?  They’re sensational and I can’t say enough about them.

I read a biography about Rex Harrison not long ago (for my Hollywood Blog).Ã?  The author wasÃ? discussing the theaterÃ? and itsÃ? greatest performers, such as Rex Harrison.Ã? Ã?  He pointed out that one of the things that set Mr. Harrison apart was that he put his all into, not just each performance, but every second of every performance ; he left nothing lying on the stage’s floor.Ã?  The same could be said of these two actors.

We sat on the front row, so we were practically up on them – we could see each gesture andÃ? each facial expression.Ã?  Bill Minihan and Steve Sherling completely lost themselves in their delightfully fun characters.

As soon as you get a chance to seeÃ? one of the showsÃ? at the BadgettÃ? Playhouse in Grand Rivers, Kentucky – run, don’t walk… speed, don’t poke. You won’t be disappointed.

You can find more information about the shows as well as the schedule by visiting their website.  Click the banner at the top of the page, or the link below.
