Unique Deliciousness from The Hitching Post at Kentucky Lake

April 15, 2015 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Taste Elevated Sweet and Tangy Mustard Seeds

Taste Elevated Sweet and Tangy Mustard Seeds

First of all, while this raving review is posted under the category Kentucky Food, this particular deliciousness was not, in any way, made in Kentucky.  It is, however, so mind-boggling good that we’re going to forgive it. In fact, we’ll pardon it completely.

Since it can be bought in Kentucky (at The Hitching Post in Aurora, to be exact) and since it is food…. it’ll remain in the Kentucky Food category.

Besides, I don’t have a Texas Food category.

While we were browsing around The Hitching Post, the owner (one of the friendliest people you’ll ever want to meet) told us about Taste Elevated Sweet & Tangy Mustard Seeds and asked if we’d like to try it out. Michael is a huge mustard fanatic, so she had him at “mustard.” We jumped at the chance to sample something that sounded very promising.

Oh. My. Word. Holy cats was it delicious. So delicious, in fact that we bought a jar right then and there and somehow managed to stay out of it until we got it home.

It is absolutely wonderful and unique in every way. It could be, quite honestly, eaten right out of the jar. I may or may not have done this on several occasions.  It’s also incredibly good on rice crackers and cornbread.

We’ve also taken it for a test drive on corn dogs, hot dogs, hamburgers, and ham sandwiches. I’ve hidden some in the refrigerator ( shhhh, don’t tell you-know-who) to try in deviled eggs tomorrow.  Hmmmm, it’d also be great in or on egg salad sandwiches.  Or potato salad…

Seriously, there aren’t many places this wouldn’t be outrageously good.

You’ll want to grab some Taste Elevated Sweet and Tangy Mustard Seeds for grilling season, trust me.  Just motor to The Hitching Post in Aurora, Kentucky and tell them you’re looking to kick up your hot dogs and hamburgers to notches unknown with Sweet & Tangy Mustard Seeds!

Picture of the Day from The Hitching Post and Old Country Store

The Hitching Post & Old Country Store in Aurora, Ky

I’m not lying, I’m pretty crazy about the guy above. He’s the strong, silent type… he laughs at all my jokes and completely agrees with me when I say I need to go shopping.

The headdress is a nice touch, too

For more pictures of The Hitching Post & Old Country Store (seriously, one of our favorite places in the world), see the new photo album I’m working on: The Hitching Post & Old Country Store  Pictures.  Better still, go see them in person – the homemade fudge is better in person!

The All American Soda Showdown at The Hitching Post & Old Country Store!

April 9, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Hitching Post Soda Showdown

The Hitching Post & Old Country Store in Aurora, Ky is the place to be for A LOT of reasons, but if you love nostalgia and have a soft spot for vintage sodas (soft drinks, soda pops, colas… whatever you call them, they’re fantastic!), you won’t want to be anywhere else.

The Hitching Post has always had a fun selection of “can’t find anywhere else” cold soft drinks but they’ve really stepped up their soda game this year. There’s an entire wall of nostalgic soda pops!

[Continued beneath the soda..]

On a recent trip, Michael got one of his absolute favorites, Lost Trail Sarsaparilla, and I tried one I’d never tried before, Frostie’s Cherry Lime Soda…. Holy Cats, it was delicious!  There are, like, two dozen different ones I want to try next time, but I’m not convinced I’ll be able to pull myself away from Frostie’s Cherry Lime goodness.

Besides, Santa’s on the front.. how are you going to beat that?!

Fortunately, if (like me) you’d love to sample lots of these classics, you have golden opportunities to do so – it’s called The All American Soda Showdown and it takes place Thursdays May through August from 4pm – 7pm at The Hitching Post & Old Country Store in Aurora, Ky.

There are over 150 nostalgic and gourmet bottled soda pops for you to get acquainted (or re-acquainted) with. 150! Just purchase a souvenir tasting glass for $4.95 and they’ll fill it with samples from their massive collection.

The Hitching Post & Old Country Store is located at 16474 US Highway 68E in Aurora, Ky. If you have any questions, call them at 270-474-2266 – but beware… they’re uncommonly warm and ridiculously friendly. Since it’s kind of unusual these days for people to be as nice as they are, they might catch you off guard.

Now you’ll just expect all that charm.

You can also visit their website at Hitching Post.us until you can visit them in person.

Hot August Blues Festival Kenlake State Park
Although this event has expired, there is always something to see and do in Kentucky. Visit our Kentucky Events  page for up to the minute happenings and be sure to check out our Things to Do in Kentucky  page. Keep an eye on Genuine Kentucky for information about the 2015 Hot August Blues Festival!

There are certain festivals, fairs, and events in Kentucky that are so wildly popular people talk about them year round. The annual Hot August Blues Festival at Kenlake State Park is just such an event – and has been for 25 years.  For a festival to last that long, you KNOW they’re doing something not just right but really right!

Grab your calendar and circle August 22 and 23 because that’s when The Hot August Blues Festival at Kenlake State Resort Park will do things really right again.

The festival is held at the park’s amphitheater on the shore of beautiful Kentucky Lake.

What a backdrop!

The show opens Friday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. with Noah’s Back Alley Blues. The program on Saturday, Aug. 23, starts at 2 p.m. with Nightfish.

Advance tickets are $15 for Friday and $20 for Saturday. Two-day advance tickets are $30 a person. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets at the gate are $20 for Friday, $25 for Saturday and $40 for both days. Advance tickets may be purchased online or at these locations: Roof Brothers Wine & Spirits in Paducah; Kaylee’s Farmhouse Restaurant in Aurora, the UPS Store in Murray and at Kenlake State Resort Park (cash only).

More ticket and schedule information is available at www.hotaugustbluesfestival.com. The festival is held rain or shine, and guests may bring chairs and coolers (no glass). A shuttle service from the park lodge and campground will also be available.

As a warm-up for the festival, Kenlake will host its Neighborhood Night Free Concert Aug. 21 from 5-9:30 p.m. Two bands are scheduled to play, the Andy Gibson Trio from 5-7 p.m.; and Adam and the H-Bombs from 7-9:30 p.m. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs for an evening of blues music on the front lawn.  The concert is free, but donations will be accepted for the Marshall County Exceptional Center.

The park restaurant will be open 5-9 p.m., and special lodging rates for Thursday night starting at $54.95 for a lodge room are available.

Kenlake State Resort Park is located minutes away from the Land between the Lakes, a 170,000-acre nature lover’s paradise and environmental education area.

Kenlake offers lodging, cottages, campground and restaurant. For more information about the park, call 1-800-325-0143.

Handsome Gentleman Hanging Out at The Hitching Post in Aurora, Ky

July 18, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hitching Post Aurora, Kentucky
We spent the day in the Land Between the Lakes area yesterday – one of my favorite ways to spend the day.  I’ll write more about everything in the next post or two, but I just HAD to show off this great looking fellow we saw in The Hitching Post in Aurora.

When I looked up and saw him, I told my husband, “Well, isn’t he a fine looking gentleman?”

It’s all in the hat.

The sweetheart of a lady working at The Hitching Post told us that he originally came from a hotel in Missouri – I’m guessing she meant the head, but hey, you never know with the “Show Me” state.  They may let families of all kinds in.

When you’re in the Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes region, you HAVE to check out The Hitching Post in Aurora. Be sure to say hi to this guy for me.
