May 20, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Ready to go jump in a lake?! Kick off what many people around Kentucky think of as “Lake Season” with the opening of Pennyrile Park’s public beach for 2015. The details, from the Kentucky State Parks, are below.

Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park invites you to attend the opening of the park’s public beach for the 2015 swim season May 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The park will offer loads of fun activities during the “Beach Blast” beginning with a sidewalk chalk art competition for children and adults.  There will also be a sand sculptor on hand creating a beautiful works of art out of the white sand.

Food will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park’s beach shelter. From noon until 4 p.m. the park will have a disc jockey dance party on the beach including announced games and dances.  Tie-dye T-shirts can be made at 2 p.m. at the beach shelter for an $8 fee per shirt. At 4 p.m., recreation staff will host a beach volleyball tournament.

Pennyrile’s beach will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. beginning May 23 through Sept. 7., unless otherwise posted. Guests are expected to follow all the posted rules and regulations.  No pets, fishing or alcohol allowed on the beach. Swimming is only allowed in the designated swim area.

Derby Weekend at Pennyrile Forest May 2-3, 2015

April 8, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park Lodge

If you’ve never been to Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, I’m here to tell you that you’re missing out on something extra special. The beautiful scenery and the cozy lodge are really something else – and the fried catfish sandwich just might be the best one in the entire state of Kentucky.  The food is always really, really, really good in this state park’s restaurant (located downstairs in the lodge).

When I had to give up gluten and wheat, visions of the epic fried catifsh sandwich at Pennyrile broke my heart in two. See the picture below and you’ll understand why.

Kentucky Picture of the Day: Beautiful Scene at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park

December 11, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Tree at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park
Most people, with their photography, have a certain “look” or “feel” – a favorite technique, if you will – and I’m no exception. Because of my love for animals, trees and landscapes, most of my pics are of these subjects.

And food… let’s not forget food.

I’ve noticed something that’s pretty stereotypical of my tree shots. Apparently I’m all about the “undershot.” When I look through my pics for Kentucky Pics of the Day, for Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram, I see a lot of photographs taken from the vantage point of the one here.

What can I say? I am obsessed with trees and the sight of one reaching into the sky as though it’s touching the Heavens gets me every time. The other night, my husband and I were watching one of our favorite shows on the History Channel and they focused a shot up a tree as it reached toward the clouds – I thought about telling my hubby, “There’s another me out there…” but I didn’t want to alarm him after he’d had a long day at work and all.

I think the tree above is a perfect reminder of the fact that beauty is all around us – every day of the year. It doesn’t have to be a 85 degree day in June for Kentucky to show off. Our beautiful state struts her stuff year round.

Again, all you have to do is look.

If you live for the summer, I apologize ahead of time for my excitement – but I LOVE autumn like nobody’s business. Pumpkins, Thanksgiving, colorful leaves, seasonal drinks at Starbucks, sweet potato pie, football season, college basketball… I get even giddier when talk turns to autumn.

I guess that’s why I couldn’t help smiling ear to ear when I saw this event notification in my e-mail: End of Summer Blast at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park. We’re (almost) approaching the end of summer, and that means my good friend Autumn is just around the corner.

Yay!!!!

Speaking of  Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park and Autumn (two of my personal favorite subjects), you HAVE to make plans to visit Pennyrile this Autumn – as many times as possible.  It’s just breathtakingly gorgeous when the trees put on their colorful Autumn attire.  Seriously, it’ll leave you speechless. The same can be said for just about all of the Kentucky State Parks – they’re beautiful year-round, but Autumn is a show unto itself. Last year we hit Pine Mountain State Resort Park at the perfect time – it made for some amazing pictures (see Pine Mountain State Park Pictures).
