Picture of the Day: A Beautiful Brown-Eyed Girl at Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina

August 26, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Deer

I love Kentucky.  In fact, on some days I love her so much it makes my knees weak.  Yesterday was one of those days. Michael and took the long route to Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, stopping in Marion, Kentucky for Marion Pit Bar-B-Q – delicious.

We were treated to a wonderful little Kentucky rain along the way – always a welcome guest. The rain cooled the temperature off a bit, which was also welcome.

Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley were absolutely gorgeous, as always.  I never get tired of watching the beautiful water, herons, sailboats, and happy people enjoying Kentucky as much as we do.  I took pictures at Lighthouse Landing and Green Turtle Bay in Grand Rivers – I’ll add them to the Grand Rivers, Kentucky Pictures photo album either today or tomorrow.

I’ll also have a Majestic Pizza & Steak House review up tomorrow as well. Great. Steak. Great, great steak.

I was going through my pictures this morning and saw… right off the bat… the one I wanted for today’s Picture of the Day.  The beautiful deer, above, was photographed at Green Turtle Bay Resort and Marina in Grand Rivers, Kentucky.  She had two babies with her and each of the three seemed perfectly content, safe, and happy. Why wouldn’t they be? Green Bay is like a lakeside paradise.

Grand Rivers, Kentucky and Beautiful Kentucky Lake

August 6, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Lighthouse Landing in Grand Rivers, KY

Grand Rivers, Kentucky is really a one-of-a-kind place.  The beautiful little village lies between a couple of lakes you may have heard of: Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. We have, literally walked from Kentucky Lake (at Lighthouse Landing) to Lake Barkley (at Green Turtle Bay Resort and Marina).  It’s not a short walk, and it’s not necessarily an easy walk, but it is a VERY enjoyable one.

If you aren’t familiar with Grand Rivers, I have a few links I want you to check out. I’d love nothing more than for you to fall in love with the “Village Between the Lakes.”  I know that all I have to do to make that happen is to get you there just once – Grand Rivers will take care of the rest.

  • You can read all of the articles I’ve written and pictures we’ve taken by clicking the following link.  Be warned, though, there are many glowing reviews: Grand Rivers, Kentucky.
  • You can also read my (again many and glowing) Grand Rivers Variety Reviews.
  • You don’t have to go all the way to Nashville or Branson, Missouri for entertainment – you can just go to Grand Rivers! The talent at Grand Rivers Variety will blow you away.  Read more about Grand Rivers Variety and buy tickets for an upcoming show. Thank me later.
  • Visit Green Turtle Bay‘s website to learn about condos on the lake, boat rentals, Docker’s Bayside Grill (outstanding burgers!!!!!).  These people are so unbelievably friendly and warm. You’ll love them… even more than the burgers.
  • Check out our photo album on Genuine Kentucky for pictures of Grand Rivers.

The Best Lakes for Houseboats Are in Kentucky!

July 21, 2012 by Joi Sigers 1 Comment

Kentucky Lake Houseboat
Houseboat on Beautiful Kentucky Lake

Kentucky has a lot of things to be proud of. From Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace to the most exciting college basketball programs in the country, we have plenty of reasons to feel good about the beautiful state we call home. One of the most obvious reasons for great pride is our lakes. Fishermen and women, houseboat owners and renters, and boaters flock to Kentucky’s many beautiful (and loaded) lakes each year. Many fall so deeply in love that they basically call friends back home and tell them they’ve found a new home!

Fact is, I believe Kentucky’s lakes are one of the primary ways we lure (excuse the pun) new neighbors.Ã?  In fact, did you know that Kentucky (not just Lake Cumberland) is often thought of as the houseboat capital of the world? I’ve always heard this and came across it recently in a bit of research I was doing for Genuine Kentucky.Ã?  As a web publisher, I often use “web tools” that help determine what words are most often searched-for on search engine giants like Google.

When I began this article on houseboat living and houseboat rentals, I turned to my trusty little web tool to see what the top search engine searches were relating to houseboats, house boats, houseboat rentals, etc. Amongst the top searches related to houseboats (or house boats as most people actually type in, oddly enough) were Kentucky Houseboats and Houseboat Rentals in Kentucky. I dug a little deeper (out of sheer nosiness) and found that houseboats are searched for more in conjunction with Kentucky than Florida, California, or… for that matter… any state I snooped into!

Apparently when Kentucky is referred to as the ââ?¬Å?Houseboating Capital of the U.S.,ââ?¬ÂÃ?  there’s ample justification for it.

When you think about it, it all makes perfect sense. Kentucky is full of lakes that lend themselves to the pleasant pastime of houseboating.Ã?  Of course, it’s more than just a pastime for a lot of people, it’s a lifestyle.

Many of Kentucky’s beautiful lakes offer a vast number of coves and fingers that allow houseboats to tie up or anchor away from the main channel and provide boaters with a peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

Then theres the ease with which visitors can rent houseboats from marinas operating on the lakes. Lake Cumberland boasts multiple marinas that specialize in renting these commodious craft to vacationers who crave laid-back quality time on the water with family and friends. When you add other popular waters like Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and Dale Hollow Lake, more marinas rent houseboats of various sizes and degrees of luxury in Kentucky than almost anywhere else.

USA Today once didÃ?  a piece on “10 Great Places to Float Your Houseboat.”Ã?  The story opened with the following:

Whether you own a houseboat or want to rent one, it’s a great way to get together with family and friends ââ?¬â? or just get away. North America’s most popular (and therefore populated) houseboating waters are Lake Powell in southern Utah and Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. Consider these recommendations from Houseboat magazine’s managing editor, Brady Kay, who spoke with Anne Goodfriend for USA TODAY.

The story went on to mention other lakes which were excellent for houseboating. Another Kentucky Lake was mentioned along with Lake Cumberland. Read on!

Overshadowed by the nearby, popular Cumberland Lake, Dale Hollow Lake is “huge, and great for cruising or entertaining,” Kay says. “There are plenty of places to rent a houseboat, and they usually have the latest models” because most houseboats are manufactured in these two states (Kentucky and Tennessee). Fishing rods lure crappie and smallmouth bass. “It might be the best lake in (this area) that no one has ever heard of.”

A great place to locate information on the stateâs major lakes or marinas offering houseboat rentals is the Kentucky Department of Travel and Tourismâs Official Visitorâs Guide, which has detailed listings for facilities in nine separate regions of the state. The guide is available online at www.kentuckytourism.com.  A printed guide can be ordered online or by calling 800-225-8747.

And dont forget that Kentucky is a leading houseboat manufacturing center. Buyers from all over the world order custom-built craft to match their particular desires. In Monticello, Somerset, Russell Springs and other towns around Lake Cumberland, youll find some of the worlds best-known houseboat builders eager to provide the craft of your dreams. Many vacationers whove gotten their feet wet with a rental eventually decide to become owners.

In the early 1950s, a Somerset native, Jim Sharpe, began building small houseboats at a facility on the banks of the newly impounded Lake Cumberland. Sharpe got the idea for the business when he realized that visitors to the lake had few options for accommodations close to the water. As the business grew, the size and luxury of the boats he built grew with it. The companys reputation spread, and Sharpe became known as the Henry Ford of houseboats. Although Sharpe is now retired, his company is still run by second- and third-generation family members.

For those who arent looking to buy, renting is an enjoyable alternative. The time of year and size of the boat determines the rental cost. A boat that sleeps 12 with six private cabins and amenities like kitchen, wet bar, central air conditioning and outdoor grill can rent for about $4,000 for Monday-Friday during peak season. Because of the pastimes popularity, make arrangements for your Kentucky houseboat vacation as far as possible in advance.

One of the Best Burgers in the Kentucky Lake & Lake Barkley Region Can Be Found At….

July 6, 2012 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Dockers Bayside Grill Turtle Burger

How mouthwatering and delicious does this hamburger look?!?!  What would you say if I told you it’s even more delicious than it looks? This masterpiece is the Turtle Burger at Dockers Bayside Grill at the gorgeous Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina. Don’t worry, no turtles were harmed in the making of this burger – it’s a hamburger, it just excels at its job.

As I wolfed down my turtle burger and onion rings (more about them in a minute), I tried to put my finger… rather my taste buds… on what makes this burger so extraordinary.  Is it the fresh, soft, Heavenly bun? Is it the high quality burger, itself or the generous serving of cheese on top? How about the fresh tomato, lettuce, and pickles? Maybe it’s the fact that they don’t just slice and slap an onion on your burger but fry it up so the flavor is even better?

In the end… you guessed it.. I decided that it was the unbeatable combination of all of these things.  When restaurants go the extra mile for an item on the menu, great things happen and fingers will be licked.

Dockers Bayside Grill at Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina

Something else I love about Dockers is the friendly workers. They’re always uncommonly friendly and helpful and your drink will never get empty, trust me, they’ll see to it.  Dockers is, quite frankly, also too cute for its own good. It sits right on the marina, so you can imagine how beautiful the view is.  You can even sit outside on the screened in porch if the weather’s agreeable.  Even though Dockers is on the Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina, you don’t have to be a guest in one of their GORGEOUS condos to eat there.  You don’t even have to have a boat in their marina.  You can be, like us, simply people on the lookout for an excellent meal!

Dockers Bayside Grill at Green Turtle Bay

The inside of the Dockers is also too cute for its own good. It sort of reminds me of a little deli – a little deli that happens to have some of the best food you’ll ever find. Their breakfasts are somewhat legendary in the Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley area.  The omelets are the stuff breakfast dreams are made of.  Their Sink Your Boat Omelet is a favorite, and for good reason. It’s stupid good.Ã?  They also have blts, chicken salad sandwiches, salads, desserts, hot dogs, catfish sandwiches, and more! Dockers serves breakfast and lunch and is open 7 Days a Week (seasonally). Monday – Friday: 7 AM-2PM  Saturday & Sunday: 7AM-3PM.

Look at the great boats and lighthouse in the picture above. I love them almost as much as I do the Turtle Crossing sign. How cute is that?!  Yep, that’s right. Too cute for its own good.

Okay. Now the onion rings. In previous posts I applauded these as being the best onion rings in Kentucky – I believe I may have even awarded them the best onion rings in the world.  Well, in the vein of full disclosure – and so no one sends me little jabs in e-mail – the onion rings have changed. It’s through no fault of Dockers – their supplier switched things up.  The onion rings are still good, mind you. In fact, they’re still some of the best onion rings in the Lake Barkley area.  However, I personally now prefer their always perfect crinkle cut fries.  They’re never over-done, never under-done.  They’re always perfection and they’re now officially the star of the sides.

Again, the onion rings are still fantastic – they just no longer make you want to drop to the ground and pray for God to make all onion rings this good.  It’s for the best, anyway, He has bigger things to take care of.

If you’re looking for the best place to stay in the lake’s region – a place that’s equal parts gorgeous, relaxing, and fun – you only have one clear choice as far as we’re concerned: Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina.  If you’re looking for a beautiful marina for your boat or even a great place to rent a boat – again, head for the turtles.

If it’s breakfast (Sink Your Boat Omelet… the name lets you know what you’re in for!) or lunch you’re looking for…. Dockers is your place.

Irregardless of why you head to Green Turtle Bay and/or Dockers, be sure to tell them that you read about them on Genuine Kentucky.  They’ve been very good to us and we try to be just as good to them.  It’s a Kentucky thing.

Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina

May 23, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

If you’re ever looking for the perfect condominium in the Land Between the Lakes region, I have one image I want you to memorize:  A Green Turtle. Basically, it’s all you need to know. Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina is like stepping into a whole new world.  Then again, the entire town of Grand Rivers casts pretty much the same spell. The beautiful little village of Grand Rivers has everything you could hope for – Branson-Style musical shows at Grand Rivers Variety, World Famous Patty’s Settlement Restaurant, shopping, etc.

The fact that Green Turtle Bay is located in such a beautiful village just makes it even more special.  However, even if Grand Rivers and all it has to offer wasn’t there, Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina would still be the best place to stay near Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake.

Green Turtle Bay has over seventy town house condominiums with marvelous views of Green Turtle Bay and Lake Barkley.  And when I say marvelous, I mean jaw-dropping, eye-popping, “Honey, grab the camera!” marvelous. Turtles, herons and various lake birds add to the beauty as well as the photo opportunities.

My husband (Michael) and a few of the guys he works with recently stayed overnight in one of these condominiums.  I’ve never, myself, had the opportunity to stay overnight in one of these town house condominiums, but I’m familiar with Green Turtle Bay enough to know that they don’t do anything unless it’s FIRST CLASS.  I was anxious for Michael to call and tell me how they were.  When he called, I asked him how everything was and all he could do was laugh.

It struck me that it was sort of a sinister, “I’m here. You’re not.” chortle, but I let it slide.

He finally got the following words out in random order: Awesome, gorgeous, amazing, super nice, amazing (believe he said it at least twice), something-else…  Pretty much what I expected from the people at Green Turtle Bay. They’re in a league of their own.

Before we got off the phone, he hit me where it really hurt. He said he and the guys would be eating breakfast the next day at the resort’s Docker’s Bayside Grill.  Good call. If all breakfasts were as delicious as Docker’s, people would never eat anything but breakfast. All day long. (Continued beneath the picture of Docker’s!)

Docker's Bayside Grill at Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina

Docker’s Bayside Grill at Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina: Onion Rings You’ll NEVER forget!

We eat at Docker’s frequently on our infamous one day trips to the lakes.  Their breakfasts are outstanding and their onion rings make me weak in the knees. I had a catfish sandwich there once that nearly made me cry with joy.

True story.

I’d been dreading the words, but when they came out of his mouth, I reeled a little.  Okay, a lot. I made him promise to take me to Docker’s “very, very, very, very, very soon,” then I did something remarkably mature….. I made him pinkie swear to take me there for lunch on our next trip.  Onion rings, here I come!

Michael took lots of pictures during his stay and will, himself, be writing about the experience in an upcoming review.  He’s been SWAMPED with work, or the review would have been up by now. At the very least, he’ll publish the pictures with a few “awesomes, amazings, and wows.”

You know what I say, though? Go for yourself and experience your own “awesomes, amazings, and wows!” Whether it’s a weekend getaway with your sweetheart or a mini vacation with the whole family, the smartest thing you could do would be to stay at Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina.  You’d be the hero of your entire family. How cool’s that?

Just be sure to eat breakfast and lunch at Docker’s Bayside Grill.. and whatever you do, order the onion rings.  I wish I spoke French right now, so I could end this post with a flourishing, exotic, flowery exhortation for you to check out Green Turtle Bay for yourself, but alas, all I speak is Kentuckian. So, let’s end it with, “Next time y’all are planning a mini vacation, don’t even think of anyplace else but Grand Rivers and Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina. I want you and your’s to have a mini vacation you’ll never, ever forget and I trust the good people at Green Turtle Bay to make it happen.”

Exotic? No. Flowery? Not so much. But it is 100 percent Kentuckian and it is completely from the heart.

See Green Turtle Bay’s Website for more information. Then make the call that’ll rock your world.
