Kentucky State Park Campgrounds Preparing to Open March 13

February 29, 2020 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Rough River Dam State Resort Park Campground

Playground at the Rough River Dam State Resort Park Campground

I recently told one of my daughters, “I have never been THIS ready for spring and summer in my life!” I am, undoubtedly, one of the biggest fans of winter in the world. I love the cold, brisk air, I love the extra excuses to indulge in hot chocolate, coffee, and chai tea lattes and I love the sweaters, hoodies, and scarves.

I watch excitedly for snow even when it isn’t in the forecast, I love college and pro football, and I delight in making more soup and chili than my family can possibly eat.

Having said all of that…. bring on the sunshine! Baseball, car trips, fresh produce, trees in bloom, flowers, birds filling the trees, and visits to Kentucky State Parks and the Land Between the Lakes always make me eager for spring and summer – more so this year than ever, for some reason.

When I saw the following press release in my e-mail, I let out an audible, “Whoop!” I always get excited when Kentucky Events start dropping into the inbox because it’s as though Kentucky… and my very world… come back to life after a long nap!

If you frequently camp or are beginning the tradition, look alive… Camping season is about to open at Kentucky State Parks!

Continued Below….

From the Kentucky State Parks:

“Our state parks are treasured by thousands of Kentucky families, including mine,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “I hope to see Team Kentucky outside and having fun this year – stay safe and keep exploring!”

The camping season officially opens March 13, 2020, at all 30 Kentucky State Park campgrounds that feature about 2,300 campsites across the state.

“One of the most popular recreational activities at Kentucky State Parks every year is camping,” said Parks Commissioner Robert Conway. “We’re making some improvements at several campgrounds that our guests will like.”

During the month of April, all Kentucky State Park campgrounds are offering buy one night, get one free, Sunday through Thursday. (Use the promotion code “Spring2020” for online reservations.)

The weekend of April 24-26 is the annual Camper Appreciation Weekend when campers get two nights for the price of one. State park campgrounds are offering a variety of activities during Camper Appreciation Weekend, including entertainment, arts and crafts, putt-putt golf, bonfires, movies, cookouts and nature programs.

Several campgrounds will see upgrades during 2020. Electric upgrades are planned at Carr Creek State Park and General Burnside Island State Park is getting electric and sewer upgrades. Some sites at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park’s campground are being re-designed to better accommodate campers.

All state park campgrounds have water and electric services with dump stations or sewer hookups, along with picnic tables and fire rings at each improved site, and bathhouses. Primitive sites are also available.

Park sites will remain open through mid-November and a few remain open during winter months.

The campground at John James Audubon State Park remains closed in 2020 due to work on a nearby dam.

Kentucky Picture of the Day: Crazy Fun on Rough River Lake

Water Skiing on Rough River Lake

Winter just really, really, really doesn’t want to leave, does it? I was dumbfounded yesterday morning when I went out to fill cat dishes, bird feeders and squirrel stations – sure enough, there were all the water bowls, frozen over.

Sigh.

Oh well, summer will be here eventually…. and when it does come blazing into town, be sure to keep Rough River Lake and Rough River Dam State Resort Park on your radar. If you need a little inspiration, just check out the picture above!

Picture of the Day: A Rough River Lake Collage

Fun in the Sun Rough River Lake Style!

Winter’s beautiful and, make no mistake about it, there are a million and one reasons to love it- but I think warm (even hot) weather is on everyone’s mind and at the top of everyone’s wish list. I thought a little reminder of sunnier, warmer days was called for right about now.. as most of us are looking out the window at what the weather people promise us is Winter 2014’s Last Hoorah.

The pictures in the collage above are from a few wonderful summer days we spent on Rough River Lake.  Just looking at these pictures makes me feel warmer and I’m hoping they’ll have the same effect on you.

Hang in there, Kentucky, each passing day brings us closer to lakes, warm days, and long walks.

Picture of the Day: Sunset on Beautiful Rough River Lake

Sunset on Rough River Lake

Breathtaking. That was the word that kept running around in my brain as I watched (and photographed) the sunset last summer on beautiful Rough River Lake.  We were on a boat tour at Rough River Dam State Resort Park as part of the lodge’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Each time I put the camera in my lap, I’d see something else just begging to have its picture taken!  It was a fun, beautiful, peaceful, and memorable boat tour and if you ever get a chance to take one of the Lady of the Lake tours at Rough River, jump on the opportunity like a cat on catnip.

Picture of the Day: Boating on Beautiful Rough River Lake

Boating on Rough River Lake

Boating on Rough River Lake

I snapped the picture above on one of  the Lady of the Lake Boat Tours my husband and I took last summer. If you’ve never been on one of these tours of Rough River Lake, make this the year you take at least one.  The minute the tour’s over you want to ask the Captain (quite the character, this guy!) when the next tour leaves.

Whatever you do, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Bring your camera. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous and you’ll find 1,001 things to photograph.
  • Plan your day to include at least one meal at Rough River Dam State Resort Park’s Grayson’s Landing Restaurant.  If you do the buffet, have the Coconut Cream Pie.
  • Enjoy a round of golf and/or miniature golf while you’re at Rough River Dam State Resort Park. Again, the scenery is amazing – and everyone is uncommonly friendly.
  • Did I mention the Coconut Cream Pie….

Check out some of our pictures of Rough River Dam State Park, Rough River Lake, and the wonderfully relaxing boat tours.

It occurs to me that, for whatever reasons, I’m having more cabin fever than usual this winter. From what I’ve heard, I’m not the only one either.

I can’t wait for nice weather to get here and stick around. The great outdoors are calling me!
