Land Between the Lakes

Kentucky's Land Between the Lakes (LBL) has so many things to do, see, and photograph. On the following pages, you'll find the proof!

Bobcat Point in the Land Between the Lakes

While there are more things to do in the Land Between the Lakes region than you could count… even if you took your shoes off and went all the way to 20!…  one of our favorite things to do is simply drive around and lose ourselves in the beauty that is Kentucky. Bobcat Point is a wonderful place to do just that.

The pictures in this post will describe the beauty of the area far better than words could, so I’ll just let them do all the talking.

National Astronomy Day at Golden Pond Planetarium

April 20, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Golden Pond in the Land Between the Lakes

The only problem we have when we visit the Land Between the Lakes is trying to see and do everything at once! Gotta admit, though, I love the challenge. The Golden Pond Planetarium has something extra special coming up later this month and if you (like my youngest daughter) love astronomy, you’ll definitely want to mark your calendar.

West Kentucky Amateur Astronomers will host a National Astronomy Day event from 10-5pm, Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

National Astronomy Day at Golden Pond (Land Between the Lakes)
“Highlights include “Meet Galileo” – an opportunity to interact with a first-person interpretation of the famous astronomer; “Comet Man” will make an appearance using dry ice to create a comet with help from visitors; and Artist Louise Phillips will be at Astronomy Day to present her artwork Dark Skies at Land Between the Lakes. A dedication ceremony will take place at 11am.

“National Astronomy Day promotes and encourages astronomy as a science and hobby. Land Between the Lakes and the Western Kentucky Amateur Astronomers hope the observance will increase knowledge and awareness of how the earth, moon and sun interact.” Says Jim Phfistner a West Kentucky Amateur Astronomy Club member.

Visitors can view free, full-dome, digital surround sound planetarium shows at 10 and 11am, 12, 1, 2, 3, and 4pm. A Star Party will take place at the observatory located just behind the visitor center after dark, if weather permits.

{Information continued below….}

National Astronomy Day at Golden Pond (Land Between the Lakes)
“The planetarium offers a variety of shows and provides an exciting way for our visitors to learn more about astronomy,” says Rob Milner, Planetarium Manager. “This year we are debuting a new eclipse show called TOTALITY. We will open the observatory for people to safely view the sun through our solar telescope. Entertaining and educational programs will be available for all ages.”

Astronomy club members will talk about how you can enjoy the total solar eclipse and give out free solar viewing glasses. Visitors will receive tips on observing the night sky, buying a first telescope and safely viewing the sun during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

Be sure to visit the gift shop while at the Planetarium – you’ll probably see me there, trying to decide which stuffed animals and coffee mugs I “… simply MUST have.”

2017 Sheep Shearing & Wool Week at the Homeplace 1850s Farm

March 13, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Sheep at The Homeplace LBL
The Homeplace 1850s Farm has a lot of fun planned for the week of April 8-15.  Sheep Shearing & Wool Week is always a popular time at the Homeplace, and  one of my own personal Land Between the Lakes events each year.

You can see, first-hand as the sheep experience their spring hair cut and see how their wool is transformed step-by-step into useful farm textiles.

Continued Below…

Sheep at The Homeplace LBL
From The Homeplace:

Watch and visit with sheep shearer Gary Lawson as he demonstrates the historic skill of hand shearing sheep. Seeing them before and after is pretty amazing.

Meet and Greet The Border Leicester Sheep (Saturday, April 8 12-1pm) On shearing day, sheep are the stars. Learn about the Homeplace’s rare heritage breed sheep, and in between their haircuts, meet them up-close and personal.

Picture of the Day: Deer at Woodlands Nature Station (Land Between the Lakes)

March 6, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Deer at the Nature Station

Woodlands Nature Station opened early this month, so you know where I was early this month…. where any other animal and bird-obsessed person would be – right there with the animals!

I have a lot of pictures my husband and I took to add to Genuine Kentucky tomorrow, but I wanted to go ahead and post this one today. I don’t know why, but there’s just something about this picture that I love.  The contentment on the faces of these beautiful animals tells me that they were as joyful about feeling the sunshine on their faces as I was on mine.

The Nature Station, in the amazing Land Between the Lakes is one of my favorite places in the world – if you’ve never been, GO! If it’s been a while since you’ve visited them, GO AGAIN!

I’ll add the rest of the pictures tomorrow. If you follow (or even just visit) our Twitter account, @GenuineKentucky, you can see the other pictures and videos we took on this trip – as well as countless pictures from around our beautiful state.

Plus a little Kentucky basketball… okay, a lot of Kentucky basketball….  – Joi (“Joy”)

Early March Events at Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes

March 2, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

 Red-Tailed Hawk, Nature Station
It’s finally that time of year…. The Nature Station will soon be opening its doors for company!
Without a doubt, one of my favorite places to visit in Kentucky is the Nature Station in the beautiful Land Between the Lakes.  Must have something to do with being a HUGE animal and bird lover.
The entire Land Between the Lakes region is, simply put, a perfectly wonderful place to escape the realities of life. A place you can relax and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors, while learning a thing or two or fifty. The Nature Station allows you to do all of these while in the company of birds, wolves, deer, turkeys, reptiles, and a host of other furry, scaly, or feathered lovelies who are lucky enough to call The Nature Station HOME.
Below are some upcoming events I know you and your entire family will love.  Any program ever put on by The Nature Station is outstanding – for people of all ages. Just be sure to bring your camera – you’ll want to capture the moments.
