The little man above (and his trusty steed in the background) are a few of my favorite sights in Owensboro. For one thing, like all the statues on the property with them, they’re simply adorable. But the main reason I love them so much is they mean I’m about to walk into a favorite restaurant, Real Hacienda on Frederica Street (4820 Frederica St. to be exact). Real Hacienda is one of our favorite places to eat lunch and/or supper. Their grilled chicken soft tacos, rice, and complimentary chips and salsa are the stuff great lunches are made of. Trust me, it’s one of the best places to eat lunch in Owensboro.
This Real Hacienda was located in a smaller building (in front of Frederica’s Wal-Mart), but business was so fantastic (yes, I did play a role in that) they had to move into a larger building. The old Johnny B’s Pizza restaurant was completely redesigned and given a beautiful Southwestern flair. Seriously, the building is a real showcase now – inside and out.
Naturally, the best thing about Real Hacienda is the great food. I’m currently working on a recent review of this restaurant, so watch for that this weekend.

Before being Johnny Bs, that building was home to Chi-chi’s Mexican Restaurant which is who I believe designed and built it. It was my favorite Mexican place in the mid 90s, I don’t know what year it closed.
I’d heard that the ‘boro had a Chi-Chi’s before we ever moved here, so that’s where it was?! I love Chi-Chis! Their little corn cakes (can’t remember their official name) are the stuff legends are made of. I wish they’d come back to town. 🙂
