Battle of Blue Licks Re-enactment Set For August 20-21, 2016

August 9, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

As both a History buff and Kentucky State Park enthusiast, this type of news release makes me especially excited. If you’re free during the weekend of August 20-21, I hope you’ll make plans for battle!

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park will commemorate the anniversary of the Revolutionary War battle with its annual re-enactment weekend on Aug. 20-21.

The re-enactment commemorates the 1782 battle that included Daniel Boone and other pioneers along the Licking River. The outnumbered pioneers lost as they went up against British soldiers and Native Americans. Among the 70 pioneers who died was Boone’s youngest son, Israel. Battle Of Blue Licks Re-Enactment

The weekend will feature pioneer camps, entertainment, trail walks, historical programs and two battle re-enactments: at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The event is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Pioneer Museum will be open through the weekend with free admission.

The park restaurant will also be open.

Admission to this event is free. There are fees for mini golf and the swimming pool. For more information, visit: http://parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/blue_licks/

Food and craft vendors will also be set up on the park, so load up your van and bring the entire family out for a full day of special programs and activities. For more information, call 859-289-5507, or toll free at 800-443-7008.

Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park has a lodge, cottages, campground, Hidden Waters Restaurant, gift shop, miniature golf, picnic areas and hiking trails. The resort is located 45 miles northeast of Lexington off historic Highway 68.

Carter Caves State Resort Park: Wildflower Pilgrimage

April 6, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Deer at Carter Caves State Resort Park

Carter Caves State Resort Park makes an especially beautiful setting for the “Wildflower Pilgrimage” that’ll take place April 22-24.

Throughout the weekend guests will experience the beauty of the area during wildflower walks, canoe trips and van tours. This is the perfect weekend for experienced wildflower enthusiasts, beginner bloomers or those who just enjoy being in the woods to get outside and experience the natural beauty of spring.

Just be sure to take your camera with you! Crested Dwarf Iris at Carter Caves

The registration fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children. An overnight lodging package for two including two night’s lodging and registration fees is available for $179.95, plus tax.

Call the park at 1-800-325-0059 to register.

In addition to cave tours, Carter Caves offers hiking, golf, mini-golf, fishing and a gem mine. Carter Caves also has a lodge, cottages and restaurant. For more information, call the park at 1-800-325-0059 or visit parks.ky.gov/

Directions to Carter Caves State Resort Park from Interstate 64 East: take exit 161 (Olive Hill exit). Turn left off the exit onto U.S. 60 east. Go approximately 2 miles and turn left on KY 182 north. Park entrance is 3 miles from the left turn onto KY 182 north.

Photo Credit: The photo of the beautiful Iris is from the Kentucky State Parks. The beautiful deer at the top was photographed by me during our last visit to Carter Caves. I thought her positioning by the sign was PERFECTION.

Owl Weekend at Lake Barkley State Resort Park

March 3, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Owl
You will not EVER find a bigger animal and bird lover than the sweet tea chugging Kentuckian on the other side of these words. My husband even set my home office up so I could look out at our bird and squirrel feeders all day.

Is it any wonder some days I get next-to-nothing done?!

If you love birds like I do, I know you’ll want to sign up for Lake Barkley State Resort Park’s “Owl Weekend” April 22-23.

The weekend will include a night trek to see owls, an “Introduction to Owls” program on Friday night and a Saturday night program featuring live birds.

The cost for the entire weekend program is $35, per person, and includes one owl prowl (Friday or Saturday night) and the two programs at 7 p.m. each night. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and bring a flashlight.

Reservations are required and can be made by calling 270-924-1131 or emailing Nick.Edmonds@ky.gov.

Lake Barkley State Resort Park is ridiculously beautiful and has one of our favorite lodges in the entire Kentucky State Park system. It’s an absolute work of art. The restaurant at Lake Barkley State Resort Park is also one of the best in the system. I have not eaten there in a while, but the last time I was there, I remember thinking it was outstanding.

In addition to a lodge, Lake Barkley State Park includes cottages, the Windows on the Water Restaurant, a seasonal campground, 18-hole golf course, fitness center with indoor pool, marina, fishing, tennis courts, hiking trails, gift shop, and recreational and nature programming. The park is near Cadiz and the Land Between the Lakes, at 3500 State Park Road just off Interstate 24. Exit at Highway 68. From the exit go west toward Cadiz and the park.
