Top 10 BBQ Restaurants in Kentucky (Picked by Kentucky 100)

March 25, 2019 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Moonlite Bar-B-Que Owensboro, Kentucky

The Kentucky 100 (a new, twice-monthly publication that delivers 100-word stories and short videos to subscribers) asked readers to help pick the top 10 BBQ restaurants and joints in Kentucky.

“We’ll pit Kentucky’s BBQ against the best anywhere,” said Publisher Chad Carlton. “Picking just 10 places wasn’t easy. Our readers and our staff are passionate about great food.”

The list, which you’ll find below, includes two from my hometown, Owensboro… makes me pretty proud!

  1. Brothers BBQ (Campbellsville)
  2. Feast (Louisville)
  3. Heatons BBQ (Princeton)
  4. Ken-Tex BBQ (Shelbyville)
  5. Momma’s Mustard, Pickles & BBQ (Louisville)
  6. Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn (Owensboro)
  7. Old Hickory Bar-B-Que (Owensboro)
  8. Red State BBQ (Lexington)
  9. Split Tree Barbecue (Alvaton)
  10. The Wood Shed (Hopkinsville)

As for my favorite BBQ here in Owensboro, I love Moonlite and Old Hickory pretty evenly. I’m also crazy about Ole South BBQ (outstanding breakfast buffet…. OUTSTANDING). The mutton at Moonlite is my favorite meat on their menu – it’s wonderful, as are their sides. Old Hickory and Ole South have exceptional sides, too.

We’ve got it good here in Owensboro when it comes to BBQ Restaurants – three wonderful ones to choose from.

What is the Kentucky 100? I’ll let them tell you in their own words…

  • The Kentucky 100 is:

100-word stories about the news, issues and leaders shaping the Commonwealth.

  • 100-second (or less) videos that tell the stories of the Bluegrass State.
  • 100 percent free to readers, delivered by email twice a month.
  • 100 percent thoughtful, engaging and insightful.
  • The Kentucky 100 is part of a national network with a proven model of producing and distributing engaging content. It is produced and powered by C2 Strategic Communications, one of Kentucky’s fastest-growing public relations and engagement firms.

Old Hickory’s Chopped Mutton Sandwich: Named One of the 21 Best BBQ Sandwiches in the South

March 26, 2014 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Old Hickory Chopped Mutton Sandwich - One of the Top 21 BBQ Sandwiches in the South!

One of the South’s favorite magazines, Garden and Gun, recently ran a feature on their website called Top 21 Barbecue Sandwiches. As a barbecue lover, my mouth drooled throughout the entire slideshow. As an Owensboro, Kentucky resident, I took great pride in the fact that Owensboro’s own Old Hickory was included!

Old Hickory’s Chopped Mutton Sandwich made the list and the picture looks as Heavenly as the rest. For good reason, too. Old Hickory is, quite honestly, one of the best Barbecue restaurants in all of Kentucky – or anywhere for that matter.

I’m a pork fanatic, so I usually order the pulled pork. I have to admit, though, the mutton is completely and utterly out of this world. When topped off with Old Hickory’s own barbecue sauce (best sauce I’ve ever had), it’s an experience you never forget.

I also have to give a BIG shout out to Old Hickory’s sides – they’re fantastic.  A lot of barbecue restaurants “phone it in” with the sides because they assume all anyone’s really interested in is the meat anyway.  Thankfully Old Hickory doesn’t “phone it in” with anything.

As soon as you get up to leave the restaurant, you’re already planning your next trip back. That happened with us on a recent trip. I was having lunch with some of my favorite people on earth – two of my daughters and two of my sons-in-law. When we stood up to leave, we were all buzzing about our next trip – even with stomachs completely full, all we could think about was our next meal.

Old Hickory does that to you… you have to keep an eye on them, they’ll make you a BBQ addict.  And baked beans.. and coleslaw.. and macaroni and cheese.. and green beans.. and fries…

In addition to the great food, the prices are reasonable, the service is extra friendly, and the entire atmosphere is the type of “charming” that only the South can pull off.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Review: Outstanding BBQ Every Single Time

May 1, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Dickeys Barbecue Pit in Columbia, Kentucky Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Columbia, Kentucky

What follows is a gushing Dickey’s Barbecue Pit review.  The restaurant we visited regularly was in Columbia, Kentucky. Unfortunately, this location is now closed (insert crying, screaming, hair-pulling…). There is a Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Lexington, though, and I’m absolutely certain it (and all locations) are spectacular.

About a week ago, the husband (also known as Michael) and I were in the Lake Cumberland State Resort Park area around lunchtime. Michael had eaten at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Columbia before and raved (and I mean RAVED) about the barbecue and sides, so he didn’t have to ask me twice where I wanted to eat. It HAD to be the place I’d heard so much about.

Here’s the thing.  If you read my Kentucky Restaurant Reviews regularly (and I love you if you do… well, actually I love you anyway… code of the hills and all that) you know that I am to catfish what Winnie the Pooh is to honey.  The image of him holding a honey pot, with each arm elbow deep in the honey is like me with a plate of catfish.  When it comes to Michael, he’s the BBQ version – up to his elbows in barbecue sauce, with a big ol’ grin on his face.

So if this guy tells me barbecue is outstanding, I listen. .

He was spot on, of course. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is wicked fantastic. The entire time I was chowing down, I thought, “If all pulled pork barbecue, beef brisket,  okra, rolls, and  macaroni and cheese tasted this good – I’d be too fat to even see my toes.”

So now I have something else to thank God for each day – the fact that all Barbecue and Barbecue sides are not created equal.  I can remain on speaking terms with my toes.

That’s what’s up.

When I walked into the adorable restaurant, I was in love before i took a bite. You’ve heard the saying, “They had me at hello,” right?  Well, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Columbia had me at Reagan.  When I saw a huge photo of Ronald Reagan hanging on the wall (seen in the top picture), I felt right at home.  Ronald Reagan was the absolute shizz.

I also flipped for the sign on the ladies bathroom (below).  There’s a male version on the men’s bathroom door, but forgive me if I didn’t want to be standing there taking a picture as some random cowpoke came out. The shock would have been too much for him and the embarrassment too much for me.

“Don’t forget to wash your hands!”

As I looked around at the adorable decor and took a few pictures, my beloved husband was at the counter apparently ordering two of everything they had. Up to his elbows.

I got the drinks as he rented a tow truck to take the trays to our table.  When I sat down in my chair the overwhelming, Heavenly smell of barbecue enveloped me.  The smell of outstanding barbecue is unlike anything in the world and this was, indeed, outstanding barbecue.  My first taste, however, was okra.  I’m a bit of an okra fanatic, and it looked like okra perfection, sitting there all hot, juicy, and perfectly fried. I’m happy to report that it tasted even better than it looked.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit Okra

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit’s Delicious Fried Okra

Some people tend to over-cook okra, which should be a cardinal sin. Or, just as hideous, they’ll fry it in oil that should have been changed weeks ago.  Dickey’s Barbecue Pit’s okra puts on a workshop and invites all the other okra in the world to attend. It’s stupendous and I could eat it every day for the rest of my life.

Mashed Potatoes with Cheese and Green Onions, Macaroni and Cheese, Baked Beans, and Rolls

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a gazillion times, too many restaurants overlook the importance of sides. They’ll put their energy and passion into their meat, and sometimes their bread – but they’ll get lazy when it comes to sides.  That’s why I’ve always said that I can tell a great deal about a restaurant or restaurant chain simply by eating a few of their sides. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit’s sides announce loud and clear that this is one of the best restaurant chains in the country. Their barbecue is so outstanding (we’ll get to it in a second) that they could conceivably slack off with their sides.

They could just throw out a traditional couple of sides (coleslaw, run of the mill mashed potatoes, and beans) and call it a day.  They don’t have to have great, melt-in-your-mouth rolls – they could have gotten away with pieces of toasted bread.

But somewhere there’s a Dickey’s head honcho saying,  “Give our customers anything less than 110 percent? Not on my watch.“

Dickey's in Columbia, Kentucky

Sometimes size matters so much it isn’t even funny.

You know me, always noticing the little (or in this case, not so little) extras.  The things that most people would look right past, I’m standing gawking at – raising my sweet tea in a toast. The giant pickles available at Dickey’s were toasted. And crunched. And loved.

You’ll notice that I always photograph and acknowledge when restaurants have Heinz Ketchup – an extra that floats my boat.  Off brand ketchup isn’t a nice thing to do to guests.  The only reason you don’t see a bottle of Heinz or Hunts Ketchup in this post is because Dickey’s makes their own ketchup, thank you very nicely.  Color me impressed.

If your mouth isn’t watering, listen for snoring, because you may be asleep.

Dickey’s Barbecue aka The Main Event

We got 4 different meats because the husband just can’t go big when he’s in a barbecue restaurant. The chicken was outstanding, but the barbecues ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket stole the show. And my heart. The funny thing is, I don’t normally flip out for beef brisket, yet there I was, daring my husband to just TRY to get between me and the brisket.  I may have growled at him as he went for it once with his fork.  He didn’t chance a second attempt.  The Texas Style Chopped Beef Brisket is too delicious for its own good.  I’ve never knew beef brisket could be so ridiculously delicious.  What’s up with that?

When I tore myself away from the brisket, I discovered that the other meats were also outstanding.  I normally go for pulled pork when it comes to barbecue, and Dickey’s pulled pork did not disappoint. It was some of the best I’ve ever had.  Ribs, a favorite of my husband and our youngest daughter (Stephany), are something else I don’t usually order – but that’s because most ribs don’t taste like this. These ribs are stupid good.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit Sauces: The Way BBQ Sauce is Supposed to Taste

Earlier I referenced the one time my husband gave a barbecue restaurant a thumb’s up that deserved a tongue out (as in blaaaaach).  At that particular restaurant, what they called barbecue sauce was actually amber-colored water.  I like my barbecue sauce to be thick and so flavorful you find yourself dipping everything in the table into it.  Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has sauces that fit the bill perfectly.  You’ll notice with the sauce on the left, I caused it to splash a little on the side to demonstrate what great barbecue sauce does – it’s thick enough to leave a mark.

The meat is so delicious it honestly doesn’t even need any sauce whatsoever, but the same can be said about the sauce. It doesn’t need anything either!  I told Michael, “Now that’s what I’m talking about! THAT’S barbecue sauce.” He would have agreed, but that would have meant putting down the rib.

Not happening.

If you’re looking for great barbecue in Kentucky, you HAVE to make your way to your nearest Dickey’s Barbecue Pit.  It may look like a lamb from the outside, but on the inside (where it counts) it proves that it’s the king of the jungle.

Old Hickory BBQ in Owensboro Kentucky: Outstanding Every Time

May 21, 2011 by Joi Sigers 1 Comment

Old Hickory Chopped Pork Sandwich and Potato Salad

I had lunch yesterday with my youngest daughter (Stephany) and future son-in-law (Rusty) at Old Hickory here in Owensboro. It’s one of our favorite places to eat – lunch or supper. The food is just outstanding. Truth be told, simply sitting in the parking lot with your nose pointed upward is a other-worldy experience. The experience only gets better when you go through the doors.

They’ve recently added mashed potatoes and gravy to the menu and I wanted to hug them for it. Stephany ordered this as one of her sides, along with macaroni and cheese. Rusty went with the macaroni and cheese and green beans, which I’m pretty sure he could eat his weight in. He ordered the “Combination” Plate which came with his choice of 3 meats, in addition to two sides. One of his meats was ham because, this is something you really need to know, Old Hickory has THE best ham in the world. True story.

He also had ribs which looked amazing. I can’t remember what the third meat was because I was busy enjoying my own meal. (Although I did eye that ham!)

Stephany and I almost every single time order chicken, ham, or chopped Bar-B-Q pork. They’re just EACH so outstanding, ordering something else seems silly. However, curiosity got the better of us and we BOTH ordered a catfish plate.

Seriously? We entered one of the best Bar-B-Q restaurants in Kentucky and we ordered catfish? How strange for mother and daughter to both lose their minds at once. The catfish wasn’t bad, by any means, but if I’m going to be honest, it doesn’t at all compare to every other meat on Old Hickory’s menu. Again, it’s not bad (it’s actually crunchy and flavorful), it just simply gets overshadowed by the world’s best ham, chicken so good you want to weep, and pork bar-b-q that makes you wish you had 2 mouths so you can enjoy it twice as much.

If you read very many of my Kentucky Restaurant Reviews on Genuine Kentucky, you know how I feel about sides. I hate (with a cruel and unusual hatred) for a restaurant to focus solely on it’s meat items. It’s as though they say, “We have great steaks, what does it matter if our baked beans taste like microwaved pork ‘n beans?!”

It matters, buddy, it matters.

Old Hickory obviously doesn’t rest on the laurels of it’s spectacular meats, their sides are so remarkable that you actually have to sit and think before choosing, With most restaurants, you order the same sides each time because they’re the only two worth ordering! Old Hickory plays a different game with their sides – every single one of them is mind numbing-ly delicious. It causes a real dilemma, to tell you the truth.

  • Potato Salad – Excellent
  • Cole Slaw – Excellent
  • Bar-B-Q Beans – Excellent
  • French Fries – Excellent
  • Onion Rings – Excellent
  • Green Beans – excellent

And now they’ve gone and added mashed potatoes and gravy that are also Excellent.

Another pet peeve is when restaurants overcook their fries or home potato chips. Someone needs to tell them that food continues to cook when it’s removed from the oil – so if you allow it to become a little dark in the oil, it’ll be positively brown when it makes it to the plate.  This never, ever happens at a couple of restaurants and Old Hickory is one. Perfect fries and/or onion rings each and every time.

The Bar-B-Q Plates each come with pickle, onion, bread (our catfish came with wonderful fried cornbread!), the meat(s), and two sides.  The meats include mutton, pork, beef, ribs, mutton ribs, chicken, chix strips, turkey, ham (did I mention that it was the best in the world?), and catfish.

Sandwiches include: Sliced mutton, chopped mutton, sliced pork, chopped pork, sliced beef, sliced turkey, sliced ham, sliced ham and cheese, chicken, hamburger, cheeseburger, grilled cheese, and catfish.  They also serve chili (but it’s seasonal), burgoo, and bean soup (with cornbread).

If you have room for dessert after all of the excellent food, you can choose between various fruit cobblers (blackberry, apple, cherry) or pecan pie.  Order your dessert “A la mode” for just a little more.

Old Hickory gets extra bonus “Genuine Kentucky” points for serving Coke products.  Oddly enough, that’s one of the first things I notice about a menu!

Just to give you an idea of how much our family LOVES Old Hickory, we don’t just frequently eat there for lunch or supper, we gave them the ultimate compliment in October of 2010.  Our oldest daughter (Emily) and my now son-in-law (Dill) were planning their wedding.  We all looked at the many different choices for catering and unanimously chose Old Hickory.  One of the most important dates in our family’s history and we invited Old Hickory to the celebration.

Everyone loved the food and asked where it was from… as well as how to get to the restaurant.  And they hadn’t even tried the ham!!!

Old Hickory is on 228 Washington Avenue in Owensboro Kentucky – Off of Frederica.  There’s a large parking lot, with parking on either side of the restaurant.  Use the map below for directions – I don’t want you to miss out on this outstanding food.

It’s the flavor of Owensboro, and it’s really something to enjoy.
