Coffee, Wayward Cats, Hiding Squirrels, Nervous Songbirds, and a Screaming Hawk

July 25, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hawk July 25, 2012

My morning routine is one you’d expect from an animal and bird loving coffee addict.  My inside cat, Alexa, wakes me up usually around 5:30.  By the grace of God, I make it to the kitchen where I feed her while simultaneously turning on the coffee maker.  An art form perfected over the years.

While Alexa eats (as though she hasn’t eaten in months) and the coffee fills the kitchen with a Heavenly aroma, I gather up bird seed, fresh water, cat food, peanuts, dried corn, sunflower seeds and whatever else may be needed in the great outdoors.  I feed my outside cats (Queen Fatima and Hannah) who always seem to be exhausted from their evening activities – I don’t judge them.  They’re single. I fill their water bowls with fresh water and a little ice…. they like that in the summer.  As Fatima (a feral cat I turned into a big baby) and Hannah eat and drink, I make my way to the different squirrel and bird feeding stations in our yard. I say squirrel and bird because they’re in the yard almost constantly, but rabbits, skunks, raccoons, possums, and even coyotes and deer have been known to think of our yard as their own personal kitchen.

In fact, an adorable little skunk family is in our yard almost as much as the squirrels. Smelly little cusses when they get riled up, but so cute they’re worth it.

This morning, as I was filling the squirrel’s feeder with cracked corn and sunflower seeds, I wondered why they weren’t nearby. Usually the squirrels are waiting for me each morning.  When I heard a crazy scream overhead, I realized why they were hiding out. The cardinals and doves that were focusing intently on their breakfast scattered as I looked up to see a really big, beautiful hawk gliding over us.  The sounds she made could only be described as screams. She landed on a large phone pole behind our house.  I made her promise to stay put while I ran in for my camera.

When I returned, I was SO glad to see she was where I’d left her. She had done just as I’d asked her to… which is why I’ve attributed the feminine pronoun to her rather than the male.  I took several pictures, which you see here.  Keep in mind that it was between 5:30 and 6:00 am and I was operating without so much as a gulp of coffee yet.  So the pictures aren’t that fantastic.  After a couple cups of coffee, I looked at the pics and asked myself, “Why didn’t you center her in the picture better?… Why didn’t you hold your hand steadier?… Why didn’t you climb on the car to get a little closer?… Why did you cut her tail off in a couple of pics?..  If you’d have climbed on the garage roof, you’d have been thisclose..”

After 2 cups, I’m invincible.

I’m also ridiculously in love with and excited by animals and birds, so the fact that I even attempted to photograph this beauty instead of just gawking at her is huge for me. I’d have been a hawk gawker, and it wouldn’t have been the first time.

I’ve looked through my bird books and checked websites that I trust, but I”m still not 100 percent sure what type of hawk this is. After posting these pictures, I’m going to contact Geoff Roberts, Rough River Dam State Resort Park’s Program Services Leader, Naturalist, Fisherman, Bird Expert, and all around super nice guy.  If anyone can tell what type of hawk this big beauty is, he can.  The only problem is, my pictures may not give him much to go on – after all I didn’t climb a car or anything. Cursed hindsight!

If he’s able to identify her, I’ll come back and edit this post.

EDIT: He knew… as I knew he would! She’s a Red Tailed Hawk.

Click on the Hawk’s pictures for a closer look.  Unfortunately the pictures don’t capture just how big and gorgeous she was:

Barren River Lake State Resort Park Offers Sandhill Crane Weekends

December 13, 2011 by Joi Sigers

Barren River Lake State Resort Park

There’s always something fun going on at Barren River Lake State Resort Park !

Beautiful Barren River Lake State Resort Park never fails to impress.  Maybe you’re a photographer looking for incredible photo ops or a diner looking for great catfish in the lodge’s restaurant.  Maybe you’re a boater, fisherman (or woman), or golfer looking for their next great challenge.

Or maybe you’re simply looking for rest and relaxation surrounded by Kentucky’s awe-inspiring beauty.  Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it.. and more… at Barren River Lake State Resort Park.  They have something special in store for bird lovers in January and February.

Each year thousands of sandhill cranes make Barren River Lake a stop on their journey back home.  Join Barren River Lake State Resort Park during its Nature Watch Weekends to get up close to these beautiful cranes as they migrate through the area.

The weekends, Jan. 20-21 and Feb. 17-18, 2012, will consist of educational sessions conducted by Wayne Tamminga, a wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. CST.

Participants can register for one of two trips. The morning sunrise trip takes guests to the roosting site before sunrise to experience the beauty of the cranes leaving the roost as they journey to nearby cornfields to spend the day. The sunset trip begins by viewing the birds in the cornfields and ends at the roosting site so you may view the magnificence of thousands of cranes circling overhead as they get ready to settle down for the night.  Each of these trips will be led by naturalists from the Kentucky Department of Parks.

Registration is $30 per person and includes the evening session, a sunrise or sunset field trip, boxed meal, and a T-shirt.  Registration forms are available online at http://parks.ky.gov/calendar/details/nature-watch-weekend–sandhill-cranes/16254/ or by contacting Jamie Avery at 1-800-325-0057.

Please note that the dates selected are based on historical records under normal weather conditions in January and at the end of February, and past trends of the cranes’ arrival in this area.  Please be aware that this narrow window of opportunity can vary by several days based on weather and the cranes’ migration schedule.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park, near Glasgow, has a lodge, cottages, Driftwood Restaurant (amazing catfish!), golf course, fitness center, gift shop, fishing, picnic areas and hiking trails. The resort is located 44 miles southeast of Bowling Green and 15 miles south of Glasgow. Take I-65 to the Cumberland Parkway east, to US 31E south.

Bird Watching at Land Between the Lakes

July 14, 2010 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Hummingbirds at The Nature Station (Land Between the Lakes)
As you can probably tell,  we’re pretty much obsessed with wildlife, birds, and butterflies at Genuine Kentucky.  Truth be told, I’m becoming more than a little intrigued with insects as well -dragonflies, lady bugs, stick bugs, lightning bugs… such cool little guys.  Even more reason to love living in Kentucky.

We have such a beautiful variety of these fascinating animals.

One of my favorite things to do when in the Land Between the Lakes area (in addition to eating catfish  – another obsession) is to look for and observe wildlife.  Whether we’re at the outstanding Woodland’s Nature Center, the equally outstanding Elk & Bison Prairie or hanging out at one of the beautiful state parks – my eyes are always peeled for extra-special locals.

The hummingbirds shown above are just some of the beautiful birds who call The Nature Station “Heaven on Earth.”  The oasis The Nature Station has provided for birds include their favorite plants, plenty of shelter, birdseed, hummingbird feeders, and even a bat house!

When you’re in the Land Between the Lakes area, I hope you’ll take in all the beauty around you – including the amazing array of birds. At many of the travel brochure stands in the area, you’ll find a pamphlet titled “LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES AREA BIRD CHECKLIST.”  This extremely handy little guide lists the different birds you could potentially see while at Land Between the Lakes.

If you’d like to print out your own guide, you can do that too!  LBL.org has thought of everything and has an online version of the Land Between the Lakes Bird Checklist.

The pamphlet lists the places below as “Recommended Birding Spots”

  • Kentucky Dam
  • Hematite Lake and Trail
  • Honker Lake, Bay, and Trail
  • Woodlands Nature Station Backyard
  • North/South Trail – Sugar Bay to Rhodes Bay
  • Shaw Branch Road – (153/134) from Hwy 68/80 to Energy Lake
  • Elk & Bison Prairie
  • South Oak Grassland Demonstration Area
  • The Homeplace
  • Fort Henry Trails
  • South Welcome Station and Bear Creek

I’d add the following Birding Opportunistic sites in and around the Land Between the Lakes Region:

  • Lake Barkley State Resort Park
  • Kentucky Dam Village
  • Kenlake Lodge
  • Grand Rivers Jetty at Sunset – At Lighthouse Landing on Kentucky Lake, Grand Rivers, Kentucky
  • Little Lake Park (Grand Rivers) – Located on Commerce Street behind the Badgett Playhouse
