Downtown Greensburg: More Than Just Slaw Burgers!

November 11, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Green County Historic Marker

Historic Downtown Greensburg

One of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon is to roll into a Kentucky downtown, get out of the car, and get to know every nook and cranny.  Even if it’s a downtown I’m familiar with, I never tire of the nooks or the crannies.

Greensburg is a great little historical downtown. As a history buff, I think I could hang out there for hours just sitting and imagining what it was like long ago.  That’s one of my favorite things to do in downtowns  – “picture” how everything looked as people went about their daily routines generations ago.

Old Greensburg Courthouse

Old Greensburg Courthouse

Old buildings that now house new businesses just fascinate me. I know that many of these buildings have to be repaired and maintained, but when they’re left as close to the original building as possible, it’s a beautiful thing.

… a Slaw Burger, Fries, and a Bottle of Ski!

It was a huge, colossal, downright soul-crushing disappointment to find that Ennis’ Home of the Headhunters’ Original Slawburgers was closed. The Kentucky Headhunters put Ennis’ on the map with their popular song “Dumas Walkers.” Okay, so maybe it wasn’t “soul crushing,” but it WAS a huge disappointment.

Well, let’s all go down to Dumas Walker.
Let’s all go down to Dumas Walker.
We’ll get a slaw burger, fries, and a bottle of Ski.
Bring it on out to my baby and me.

The Old Greensburg Courthouse (gallery below) is someplace all history lovers should visit. Just look at the beautiful HUGE chain between the columns. It’s really a fascinating building.

This chain serves as a reminder that we should never just walk past any building or landmark. Stop, look around, and appreciate what’s right in front of you.

Now, it’s only fitting to end the trip to Greensburg with a “slaw burger, fries, and a bottle of Ski…” right?

Baseball fans, did you know Rod Henderson is from Greensburg? Henderson was born in Greensburg and attended Glasgow High School (Glasgow, Kentucky). He then went to the University of Kentucky, where he pitched for the Wildcats’ baseball team.

He was drafted in 1992 by the Montreal Expos. In addition to pitching in Montreal, he pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1998.

I believe he is currently a professional scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates – one of the most exciting teams in baseball. Even though they’re one of my St. Louis Cardinals biggest rivals, I respect the way they play the game. Even more so now that I know they have a Kentuckian in their organization… and an ex-Wildcat, at that!

Kentucky Picture of the Day: Nattily Dressed Pink Flamingo in Downtown Bowling Green

September 2, 2015 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Pink Flamingo Downtown Bowling Green, Ky.

Every Girl’s Crazy ’bout a Sharp Dressed… Flamingo?

You never know who you’re going to meet when you’re walking around downtown Bowling Green. On a recent trip, we met the lovely flamingo above. It’s all fun and games until you realize the flamingo is better dressed than you are.

If you get a chance to hang out in one of Kentucky’s downtowns, jump at the chance. Among other Kentucky cities, Bowling Green, Louisville, Morgantown, Greenville, Lexington, Central City, Paducah, and my own hometown, Owensboro, have wonderful downtown areas. Walk around, stop inside the shops (it’s always the right time to support local businesses and it doesn’t get much more local than your own downtown!), and soak up the history and unmistakable vibe.

Downtowns have a way of marrying the “old” with the “new” in a way that’s truly fascinating, so don’t just drive past the next downtown you see… get to know it better.

You never know who, or what, you’ll see.

Beautiful Fountain in Bowling Green’s Fountain Square Park

What’s Not to Love About Downtown Bowling Green, Kentucky?

If you read Genuine Kentucky regularly and/or follow any of my Twitter or Instagram accounts, you know I’m never happier than when I’m taking pictures. Whether it’s cats, food, trees, coffee, birds, or any other personal passions – when I’m looking at the world through my camera, there’s always a big happy smile on my face.

Photography has become one of my favorite pastimes over the past few years. Fortunately, I live in a state as beautiful as Kentucky, so there’s always something extra special to photograph.

I’ve always kind of felt disappointed when the weather doesn’t cooperate with me. I prefer the sun to be looking down at whatever it is I’m looking at – to provide just the right lighting… God’s lighting!

However, I’ve also found that you can actually get some pretty amazing photos when the skies are overcast or even when there’s a storm abrewing, as my grandmother would say.

These pictures have reminded me of this fact. Michael and I recently spent a Saturday in Bowling Green. We walked around the beautiful downtown – enjoying and, of course, photographing absolutely everything.  I’ll add the rest of the pictures either today or next Monday, but I wanted to put these up first.

The darker skies provided a dramatic backdrop for the pictures and all the fretting about “not having enough lighting” proved to be a waste of time. In fact, I’m pretty crazy about the way the droplets of water show up against the dark clouds and the overall “effect” of the pictures makes me smile.

Beautiful Fountain Square Park

Fountain Square Park, in downtown Bowling Green, is a real beauty.  As a tree lover, I just kind of walk around in a daze looking at the gorgeous trees. I’m also a huge fan of the beautiful statues in the park. You can read more about Fountain Square Park on Visit BGKy.com.

If you’ve never seen Fountain Square Park, or if it’s been awhile, I hope you’ll go spend some time in the park soon.  Spend time admiring the statues, reading the signs, and… by all means!… appreciating the huge trees.
