“Mining Show” at Carter Caves State Resort Park – April 2, 2016

February 19, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Carter Caves State Resort Park Creek
Carter Caves State Resort Park is absolutely beautiful and if you’ve never been, make this the year you go. Trust me, once you do, you’ll count the days until you can go back. It’s gorgeous and fun for people of all ages.

From the Kentucky State Parks

Mining Show at Carter Caves
The Eastern Mining Collectors Association will hold its fifth annual Spring Meet and Show at Carter Caves State Resort Park on April 2. Help celebrate this special event and the rich history of coal mining in Eastern Kentucky!

Vendors from across the country and as far away as Alaska will be at the show to sell, buy and trade mining artifacts used in the mining of coal, gold, silver and copper. The artifacts include lamps, mine signs, photos, posters and other items. They will also be available to give free appraisals of mining-related items that you might have hidden in your attic, basement or barn.

Visitors will have an opportunity to talk about coal mining and understand the work that it takes for a miner now, and years ago, to produce coal used for electricity.

The show is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2. The show is free. Contact Colin Gatland at cgatland29@gmail.com for more information.

Carter Caves State Resort Park is located at 344 Caveland Drive in Olive Hill. The park has a lodge with a restaurant, cottages and campground. Besides cave tours, activities include hiking, horseback riding, swimming, boating and fishing. For more information about the park, call 1-800-325-0059.

Directions: From Interstate 64, Exit 161, take U.S. 60 east. Go approximately two miles and turn left on KY 182 north. The park entrance is three miles from the left turn onto KY 182 north.

Fort Henry: 154th Anniversary in the Land Between The Lakes

January 15, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Fort Henry

If, like us, you’re both a History Buff and fan of the Land Between the Lakes, the following news from the LBL will be of particular interest.

From the Land Between the Lakes:
The Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Living History Museum in Land Between The Lakes and Fort Donelson National Battlefield are partnering to remember the 154th Anniversary of the Battle at Fort Henry with a program and walk on Saturday, February 6.

A program about local Civil War history will be presented from 1-2:30pm at the Homeplace. A guided ¼ mile walk follows the program from 3-4pm at the Fort Henry Trail parking area. Participants will drive and meet at the Fort Henry Trail. The walk is weather dependent. Registration and full deposit for the day is required:  $5/adults and $3/children. Call 270-924-2020 to make your reservation. Interpretive Center and gift shop will be open for this program; farm site will be closed. Doors open at 12:30pm.

Invited historian, Susan “Ski” Witzofsky, sets the stage for war “Between the Rivers.” In February of 1862, Confederate forces occupied Fort Henry as federal forces moved up the Tennessee River. The program will cover Fort Henry’s construction, battle, and legacy 154 years later. Individuals can relive the siege with a guided walk along the Fort Henry Trails and Confederate fortifications.

Fort Donelson National Battlefield will also host a Walk at Fort Heiman the same day from 10-11am. Meet park staff and volunteers for a brief walk around the historic features at Fort Heiman. For more information, contact 931-232-5706 x110 or visitwww.nps.gov/fodo. Program is weather dependent.

Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area manages more than 170,000 acres in western Kentucky and Tennessee as part of the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Agriculture’s public lands program. Land Between The Lakes offers outdoor recreation, lake access, land management, and environmental education to over 1.4 million visitors annually. The Friends of Land Between The Lakes works in partnership with the Forest Service providing program services, funds development, and volunteer support.

Patti’s 1880’s Settlement in Grand Rivers Wins TripAdvisor Award

June 18, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pattis 1880's Settlement

Patti’s 1880’s Settlement
Congratulations are in order for Patti’s 1880’s Settlement in beautiful Grand Rivers! The legendary Kentucky restaurant has received the TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence Award” for 2015.

“We are honored to receive this award again from our customers,” said owner Chip Tullar. “We strive to make Patti’s “That Special Place” and we are happy that our customers agree,” he added.

The prestigious Certificate of Excellence award recognizes establishments that consistently earn great TripAdvisor reviews from travelers. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel site with 340 million visitors each month and offers advice from millions of travelers worldwide.

Started in 1977, Patti’s 1880’s Settlement was originally known as Hamburger Patti’s Ice Cream Parlor. The restaurant was a block building that was part of a 6-unit motel. With 20 seats, the motel units quickly gave way to become dining rooms. In 1990, Mr. Bill’s Restaurant was added to accommodate bus tours and to add more seating.

The two restaurants serve over 350,000 people each year in a town of 350 people!

Congrats to Natural Bridge State Resort Park’s Chef, Kendra Epperson!

September 18, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kendra Epperson, Chef at Natural Bridge State Resort Park
The husband, aka Michael, and I were talking about Kentucky State Resort Parks recently.  We do that a lot – as you probably know, we love them greatly.   During this particular conversation, we were weighing in on which park might be especially nice for a wonderful autumn visit.

I have a front runner.

This summer, Kendra Epperson (a chef at Natural Bridge State Resort Park) was a Cast-Iron Chef cooking competition winner during the 2014 Kentucky State Fair.

Epperson also picked up a Cast-Iron Chef win in 2010 – obviously the lady knows her cast-iron!  This year, she was given secret ingredients to prepare in 30 minutes. She cooked sirloin steak with sauteed onions, Fettuccine Alfredo with vegetables and a creamy southwest roll up.

She had me at sirloin.

An Ohio native, Karen Epperson, graduated from the culinary school at Ashland Community and Technical College. She began working for Kentucky State Parks at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park and has been the chef at Natural Bridge’s Sandstone Arches Restaurant for the last two years.

She also serves on the advisory board for the Ashland culinary school.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park is home to one of the largest and most famous natural arches in Kentucky and is surrounded by breathtaking topography and unique flora and fauna within the Daniel Boone National Forest. Natural Bridge offers lodging, dining, cottages, and campground accommodations.  Hiking trails and other recreational opportunities are available.  For more information call 1-800-325-1710 or visit www.parks.ky.gov/findparks/resortparks/nb
