Picture of the Day: Lighthouse Landing and Kentucky Lake (Gorgeous Even in Winter!)

March 11, 2019 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Lighthouse Landing and Kentucky Lake, Winter 2019

I haven’t been doing the Picture of the Day for some time now. I’m sure you’ve noticed that this Kentucky Blog is less active in the winter. Mainly because WE’RE less active in winter! Seriously, when I say we don’t go anywhere, I mean we DON’T! GO! ANYWHERE!

I’m kicking it back into gear, here, with a photo from one of our favorite places in the state: The lookout spot at Lighthouse Landing – looking out over gorgeous Kentucky Lake. Grand Rivers and Kentucky Lake are beautiful year-round – as the rest of Kentucky is. It’s simply not as fun to get out and admire it when it’s cold.

Fortunately, the weather experts assure me it will begin getting warmer soon. I cannot wait! Now that the end of winter is within reach, there will be more posts, restaurant reviews, and pictures of the day.

How wonderful is it to see the trees budding out?! I just love everything about this time of year! ~ Joi (“Joy”)

Happy First Day of Spring, Kentucky: Even if Winter Hasn’t Gotten the Memo Yet….

March 20, 2018 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Green Turtle Bay Resort and Marina

Beautiful Green Turtle Bay in Grand Rivers

As I’m typing this, snow is falling outside of my window. While it’s beautiful (I’ve always loved snow), I’m READY for spring! Hard to believe today is actually the first day of spring, isn’t it? Winter seems to be having a hard time believing it, too.

I have no doubt that in just two weeks, we’ll have forgotten all about this snow and will only be focusing on tulips, flower beds, baseball, and strawberry sundaes (or whatever flavor YOU choose!).

The beautiful picture above was taken a few years ago at Green Turtle Bay in Grand Rivers – I’m guessing it doesn’t look quite like this today…. but it will!

Enjoy the peaceful day and hang in there. Beautiful weather is just around the corner. I cannot… CANNOT… wait to get out there and start enjoying and photographing the beauty that is Kentucky.

Kentucky Pictures of the Day Celebrate the First Day of Spring

March 20, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Spring Trees at Jack C Fisher Park - Owensboro, Kentucky
Jack C. Fisher Park, Owensboro
Spring is such an exciting time of year, isn’t it? I mean, I love winter (and I even love snow… like A LOT), but spring is always such a beautiful and exciting season. Trees are budding, birds are singing, UK Basketball is in the post season, baseball is back, bedding plants and seeds are begging to be bought, and you can finally get outside and play again. I don’t know about you, but I am so so so so so SO ready for each one!

A lot of times it seems like Genuine Kentucky has to nap during the winter. Sure, I still add pictures and update as much as possible, but it’s nothing compared to the 24/7 excitement buzzing around the rest of the year.

What better way to celebrate the first day of Spring than with some pictures of Kentucky all dressed up for the season?!

Spring Trees
Beautiful Buds and Blooms
As you could imagine, tree huggers like me keep a close eye on the trees in the spring. Okay, pretty much year round… but especially in the spring. After all, like Genuine Kentucky, they’re awaking from their nap too!

“Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn!” – Lewis Grizzard

I hope you’ll get out there and enjoy as much of Kentucky as you possibly can – not just this spring but every day thereafter. We’re truly blessed with an amazingly beautiful state and should see as much of it as possible.

Kentucky Picture of the Day: Christmas in Webster County

December 7, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Barn decorated for Christmas in Onton, KY.
Barn in Webster County – Ready for Christmas
First of all, I apologize for the lack of updates, restaurant reviews, and pictures of the day lately. I have no excuse for myself other than the fact that during the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas, my every though is centered around baking, cooking, decorating, shopping for presents, and eating every gluten free cookie that gets within reach.

My husband took the picture above for me to use as “Kentucky’s Picture of the Day” a few days ago as he drove through Webster County.

Hmmm, wondering if that’s his way of saying, “Put down the cookies long enough to update the blog, Cookie Monster!”

Well, it worked!

Charming little Onton is in Webster County and at least one of its residents knows how to celebrate Christmas right!

Wonder if he or she likes cookies too?

I hope your Holiday season is going beautifully. Enjoy every precious moment – these are the memories we’ll cherish in the years to come.

Pictures of the Day: Beautiful Donkeys in Lewisburg, Kentucky

September 22, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Donkeys in Lewisburg, Kentucky

Hello, Beautiful!

When preparing for today’s Kentucky pictures of the day, I did a little research.  I wasn’t sure whether to call these beauties donkeys, mules, jackasses, horse donkeys (is there even such a thing?) or something entirely different. As a card-carrying animal lover extraordinaire, I hate to admit that I was completely clueless about the distinctions between these animals. Before labeling the pictures, I wanted to at least know what term to use. The last thing I want to do is offend an innocent animal. They can be very sensitive, you know.

As it turns out, I learned a lot about these gorgeous animals:

  • A male donkey is called a “Jack” – so all jackasses are male….. so to speak 😉
  • Burro is the Spanish and Portuguese word for donkey. In the Southwestern United States, burro is used to describe any small donkey used primarily as a pack animal, as well as to describe the feral donkeys that live in Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah, Kansas, and Nevada.
  • A mule is the offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare)
  • A hinny is the product of a female donkey (jenny) and a male horse (stallion)
  • Most mules are sterile.
  • Donkeys and mules are more intelligent and less-stubborn than they’re normally depicted in literature, tv, movies, etc.

I’ve (obviously) gone with the term “donkey,” simply because it seems to be the universal word for all of these animals.  These guys (gals?) just seem to be taller than most donkeys I’ve seen.

At any rate, they’re absolutely gorgeous and I could have spent all day watching and photographing them. To be perfectly honest, I wanted to bring them all home with me but I’m pretty sure their owners (not to mention my cats!) wouldn’t have been very happy with that call.
