Vote For Your Favorite Kentucky State Parks In Coca-Cola’s America is Your Park Contest

May 31, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park Golf Course

Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Golf Course – immaculately beautiful.

As someone who is in love with Kentucky’s State Parks, I’m really excited to tell you about a contest in which you can show your support for one (or even several!) of your favorite State Parks.

Fans of Kentucky State Parks have a chance to vote for their favorite park through the third annual Coca-Cola ââ?¬Å?America is Your Parkââ?¬Â contest.

The park with the most votes will receive a $100,000 recreation grant from Coca-Cola. The second-place park will receive $50,000, and third place will receive $25,000. These recreation grants are provided to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in parks where people can play and be active.Ã?  That’s A LOT of money and I’d LOVE to see one of our amazing Kentucky State Parks walk away with it.

The deadline for voting is July 15, 2012.

Voting is easy. Visit www.livepositively.com/parks to earn one vote per click for your favorite Kentucky State Park. You can also vote by checking in from your favorite state park. More details are available by visiting the website.

You can vote more than once, by the way – trust me, I’ve been voting like a woman possessed. 🙂

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park Cottages

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park Cottages in the trees… surrounded by deer, birds, squirrels, and outrageous beauty.

Our Kentucky State Parks are something we can all be very proud of. They’re ideal places to spend an evening, a weekend, or an entire vacation. The food at the Kentucky State Resort Parks is always outstanding. I wish I had a dollar for every piece of catfish I’ve eaten at our state resort parks… better yet, keep the dollars, just give me more catfish!

Lake Barkley State Resort Park Lodge

A reminder: If you are affiliated with one of Kentucky’s amazing State Parks, e-mail me information about events and/or specials you’d like to share with our readers. I’ll be more than thrilled to post information and/or pictures right away.Ã?  Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park and Lake Barkley State Resort Park are excellent about mailing me information.Ã?  E-mail me at joi @ genuinekentucky.com or my personal e-mail address joisigers @ aim.com (without the spaces, of course!).

One of several deer we saw recently on Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park’s Golf Course. Gorgeous Golf Course, uncommonly friendly staff and an equally friendly and knowledgeable golf pro.

Things to Do at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park: Disc Golf

May 29, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Disc Golf at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

Lake Cumberland Disc Golf Course

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park is the very definition of gorgeous. When I see places like the Lake Cumberland area, I think, “Now Kentucky’s just showing off.”

And why not? If you’ve got it, flaunt every bit of it! Kentucky flaunts like few would even dare attempt.

Kentucky doesn’t hold anything back in the Lake Cumberland area, which makes Disc Golf at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park especially exhilarating. Imagine, fun with family/and or friends while surrounded by scenery that looks straight out of a painting.  Seriously, have your camera ready.

If you aren’t yet familiar with the fast-growing and ridiculously popular sport of Disc golf, let me give you a little background.  Disc Golf  is played like the traditional game of golf that you’re more familiar with.  Except, instead of using a ball, you use a flying disc or Frisbee and instead of using clubs, you use your hands. I don’t have to tell you how much cheaper a Frisbee is than golf balls and it’s pretty obvious that your hands come cheaper than a set of clubs!

Surprisingly, Disc Golf was first played in the early 1970’s I was surprised to learn that – I would have sworn it was a much more recent fad.  The goal of Disc Golf is to “complete” a hole in the fewest number of  throws or tosses.

Like the traditional game of golf, Disc Golf is great exercise.  Maybe even more so, since you walk a great deal more.  Fans of Disc Golf also love the fact that it’s a lot more inexpensive than other sports.

Did you know that there isn’t even a greens fee at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park?!

Benefits of Disc Golf:

  • Great exercise.
  • Fresh air.
  • Family fun for every member of the family – all ages!
  • Inexpensive.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park: So Much to Do, See, and Photograph!

April 24, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park’s sign should say, “Welcome to Paradise. You won’t want to leave.” The other side should, then, say, “Told you so.”

I have to admit, when it comes to Kentucky’s State Parks, my favorite is always the one I’m in at the time – or the one I just visited.  I always hesitate to say THIS state park or THAT state park is the most beautiful, most special, etc.

Having said all of that, I guarantee you one thing: There is no State Park in Kentucky, or anywhere else, that’s as beautiful as Lake Cumberland State Resort Park. My husband and I visited this state park a few days ago and we’re still throwing adjectives around.  Phenomenal. Stunning. Beautiful. Friendly. Special.

Where does one begin?!

Well, why not at the beginning? After passing the sign, the drive into Lake Cumberland State Resort Park might be the most beautiful entrance of any Kentucky State Park.  Then again, I love trees more than anyone who has ever been born, so naturally I thought it was just PARADISE.  Some places were so filled with lush green beauty, you had the impression you were in a beautiful green tunnel.

The only colors you see are the grays of the tree trunks, the blue sky, and the glorious green trees.  Every now and then you can’t even see the sky – the trees are that lush, thick, and beautiful.

As you can tell, it left quite an impression on me.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park is a photographer’s dream come true.

When I was taking pictures with my new camera he bought me (thank you, thank you, thank you!), my husband kept telling me, “Take pictures of something besides the trees.” But I couldn’t help myself, this tree lover nearly had the shakes.

In fact, a couple of times, when we saw deer, I was too excited to even point and click. I just wanted to take it all in.  One time a beautiful deer turned, posed and looked right at me.  But all I could do was look back, smile, and tell her how beautiful she was. How can you be expected to snap pictures when you’re communicating with animals?!

It’s probably a good thing I couldn’t see my husband’s face at that point.

Although I did my absolute best (except with the deer) to make Lake Cumberland State Resort Park’s beauty come through in the photos, I’m afraid I didn’t do it justice. To be fair, however, it’s only because pictures CAN’T possibly do it justice.  You have to be there, yourself, to truly appreciate this kind of beauty.  You have to hear the quiet, see the beauty, and you have to feel the magic.

Chipmunk at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

This adorable chipmunk was a camera hog.

I have a series of posts, slideshows, and picture galleries planned (after all, I took over 100 pictures!) for the Kentucky Blog. It was simply far too much goodness to cover with just one post.

What Makes Lake Cumberland State Resort Park Extra Special?

  • When you think of Kentucky, you think of hills, trees, and beautiful clear lakes.  Lake Cumberland State Resort Park has them all.
  • We visit MANY Kentucky State Parks, but this is the first time, upon walking into a State Park lodge, that we were greeted by someone behind the desk with a warm and friendly, “Hello!” To be fair, many State Parks don’t have a desk at the front of the door (Lake Barkley State Resort Park, for example).  However, many of our “regular” State Park haunts do and it struck me, after this gentleman extended such a friendly welcome, that no one had ever done so before.  I just love when people make you feel welcome!
  • There are countless activities and fun things to do for the entire family: Camping, Hiking, Horseback riding, Playgrounds, Fishing, Disc Golf, Shuffleboard, Miniature Golf, Sand Volleyball, Basketball, Picnicking, Tennis, Boating, Swimming (indoor pool), and photography – lots and lots of photography.
  • The Rowena Landing Restaurant, in the Lure Lodge, serves delicious food and their staff was as friendly as the man at the front desk.  The hostess and the servers made us feel like they’d known us all of their lives. That’s the sort of warm hospitality Kentucky is known for and everyone we encountered at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park is  upholding the tradition beautifully.
  • Lake Cumberland is breathtakingly beautiful.  The water is amazingly clear. It’s easy to see why this area is the Houseboat Capital of the World.
  • If you love animals and birds like this gal, you’ll be in Heaven. Deer, herons, chipmunks, squirrels, songbirds, doves, cardinals…. practically every bird imaginable. Though I did not see a dodo. Every inch of this beautiful State Resort Park is an example of what makes Kentucky so special and every where you rest your eyes will take your breath away.
