Land Between the Lakes: Things to Do This Weekend (And Every Weekend!)

April 7, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Sheep at The Homeplace, Land Between the Lakes
One of our favorite places on earth is Kentucky’s beautiful Land Between the Lakes, so this time of year is EXTRA exciting. Right about now, things really begin to get busy in the LBL and it makes us feel like kids on Christmas morning.

Below is a “run down” of special events and activities going on this weekend in the Land Between the Lakes. These events are, of course, in addition to the sights and activities you can enjoy on a regular basis, such as:

  • Elk & Bison Prairie – Open daily from dawn until dusk. The Elk & Bison Prairie is a beautiful native grassland habitat that was common in Kentucky more than a century ago. Gorgeous elk and bison roam free within this 700-acre enclosure. In addition to these magnificent animals, we’ve also seen turkeys, eagles, herons, and too many birds to name. This is one extraordinary place.   $5 per vehicle
  • Golden Pond Planetarium – Located inside the Golden Pond Visitor Center offers full-dome views of the night sky.  Organized groups of ten or more may schedule shows by calling 270-924-2020. Daily Planetarium Shows   Adults $5; Children $3    [Mon.-Fri. at 10am, and 12, 1, 2, 3, & 4pm   | Sat.-Sun. at 10, 11am, and 12, 1, 2, 3, & 4pm]

The special events below have passed, but you can find up-to-the-minute Kentucky Events on our Events Page. Also, check out some of the best things to do in Kentucky… most importantly, just get out there and enjoy our beautiful state

Special Events This Weekend!

Saturday, April 11 – Sheep Shearing at THE HOMEPLACE
10am-12pm and 1-3pm – Program free with HP admission. It’s time for the Homeplace sheep to have their annual haircut. Visit with sheep shearer Gary Lawson, as he demonstrates and discusses the historic skill of hand shearing sheep.

Wool Work – HOMEPLACE
10am – 4pm – Program free with HP admission.
The work to make fresh new fleeces into yarn for next year’s winter clothing begins today. Lend a hand as the new wool is carefully scoured, teased, and carded.

The Voice: Animal Edition – NATURE STATION
11;30 am – Program free with NS admission.
Join the Nature Station for their spin-off of the hit TV show “The Voice.” Learn about animal communication, as you watch different animal voices battle it out for victory. Come vote for which contestant you think is worthy of the winning title.

Wild Edibles Hike & Tasting – NATURE STATION
2pm – $3 per person. Fee is separate from NS admission. Reservations required because space is limited. Please call 270-924-2020 to reserve your place.
People have enjoyed nature’s bounty for centuries, and here in western Kentucky our forests produce many tasty treats! We’ll sample some foods and drinks made from local wild edibles and go for a one-mile hike to learn how to identify these items as they grow in the wild.

Also in the Land Between the Lakes This Weekend…

Friday (10th): 10am-12pm and 1-3pm – New! Home School Day – HOMEPLACE

Program free with HP admission. *Ideal for Home Educators.  Recommended for ages 5-12.

The Homeplace invites home educators and their families to spend a day on the farm and experience life in 1850s.  At the first annual Home School Day, children will have fun doing old time farm chores, as they learn practical math and science skills to use today.

Be sure to spend time in the Gift Shop/Learning Center too. So much to see, so much to learn, and (shhh, don’t tell my husband) so much to buy!

Hummingbird Festival 2014 at Woodlands Nature Station (August 2-3)

July 10, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hummingbird Festival Woodlands Nature Station 2014
Although this festival has expired, there is always something to see and do in the Woodlands Nature Station, as well as in the Land Between the Lakes. Visit our Kentucky Events  page for up to the minute happenings and be sure to check out our Things to Do in Kentucky  page.

I can actually remember the very first hummingbird I ever saw. My dad (where I got both my insane love of birds AND coffee from) pointed out a tiny little ball of motion that was hovering near one of his rose beds. When he asked if I knew what it was, I said it looked like the world’s largest dragonfly moving really, really, really fast. When he said it was a “hummingbird,” I thought he was pulling my leg – since it happened to be his favorite sport, it was never out of the question.

My mom backed up his story and a lifelong infatuation with these tiny beauties was born.

If you have an ongoing fascination with hummingbirds, you’ll want to be in the Land Between the Lakes in early August. The Hummingbird Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday (August 2-3, 2014) from 10am to 4pm.

From Woodlands Nature Station and LBL.org:

On-Going Activities:

  • Observe and learn as scientists band hummingbirds for migratory research.
  • Visit with local artists as they demonstrate their craft; buy some art to take home with you.
  • Talk with a local beekeeper as you check out our honeybee observation hive; purchase local bee products.
  • Find out how to attract bluebirds and other wildlife into your backyard; buy some native plants at our sale.
  • Visit the Hummingbird Gift Store to purchase feeders and more.
  • Discover our resident wildlife such as a bald eagle, bobcat, owls, snakes, and our new, red wolf pup.
  • Bring the kids for crafts, games, face painting, and scavenger hunt.

If you like Ruby-Throated hummingbirds, this is the weekend for you! Delight in watching more of these flying gems in one place than you can count! This year, discover “The Art of Hummingbirds,” featuring the artwork of local nature artists, inspired by the tiny hummingbirds and their outdoor neighbors. View a gallery of wildlife art, get tips from the experts, and even try your hand at wildlife photography and illustration. As always, you can also view our ongoing hummingbird banding demonstrations by licensed banders, as well as participate in a variety of programs and activities going on throughout the weekend. Bring the whole family, there will be plenty for kids to do too! Be sure to check back for further updates about the weekend’s schedule of programs and activities.$6 for adults; $4 for kids ages 5-12; Free for ages 4 and under. Event will take place rain or shine.
