Pictures Of the Day: Smothers Park in Owensboro

May 15, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Smothers Park on the Owensboro Riverfront

We grabbed a few sundaes at Sonic last night and enjoyed them on the riverfront. There were a lot of people enjoying Smothers Park last night and the beautiful thing is the ages ranged as widely as the ways in which we were all enjoying the beautiful evening.

  • Lots of families had their children on Lazy Dayz, Smothers Park’s AMAZING children’s playground.
  • A police officer enjoyed the view of the river – I’m sure he was thrilled hat everyone was peacefully having a wonderful evening. Made his job equal parts easy and enjoyable.
  • An older couple (probably in their 70s) cuddled as they watched the sun set in the distance – I couldn’t decide which was a more beautiful sight, them or the sunset.
  • Twenty-Somethings enjoyed drinks from The Creme Coffee Shop on parlor tables by the river as they talked and laughed and laughed and laughed.
  • A young father tried to keep up with two little girls, probably ages 3 and 4. They were a real sight, trust me.
  • Lots of people were taking pictures of one another in front of fountains and one mother, in particular, made me laugh out loud as she begged her young sons for them to “please, please, please be still for just one minute… that’s all I’m asking for one minute..” I’m not sure she ever got her wish.

For good reason, we’re very proud of Smothers Park and the beautiful Riverfront here in Owensboro. We love to show it off, too! I hope you and your family will come visit us SOON. Not only are we the Bar-B-Que capital of the world, we’re staking a claim on outstanding riverfront parks.

Come see for yourself!

Click the pictures below for a larger view and see more pictures of Smothers Park in the galleries – including more of Lazy Dayz… truly a one-in-a-million playground.

Picture of the Day: Owensboro Air Show 2014

November 13, 2014 by Joi Sigers 1 Comment

Owensboro Air Show Collage
The Owensboro Air Show was a huge hit again this year. Being able to see the amazing planes up close and meet the pilots was a highlight of the weekend. Cloudy skies (followed by a very cold downpour) didn’t keep the crowds away – actually, we’re pretty used to big events bringing on rain here in Owensboro.

They always do!

Picture of the Day: Owensboro Air Show (2013)

September 26, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Owensboro Air Show (Sept. 2013)

I have a confession to make, I love watching planes but I know next to nothing about them. Maybe less than nothing. While watching the planes in the Air Show last Saturday, I was beyond impressed with my family members who actually knew the types of planes we were watching.  Fortunately, when they asked which ones were my favorites, they didn’t make fun of me when my answer was, “the pretty yellow ones.”

Well, not to my face anyway.

I nearly pushed my luck when I pointed out that one plane had the “Top Gun” logo on it. I was fairly sure that observation was going to get me banned from the yard.  Then again, it’s almost unheard of to ban the one who has baked chocolate cake for the occasion.  From scratch.

I know how to secure my place with my loved ones. If you can’t do it with knowledge, do it with chocolate.

The Air Show along Owensboro’s beautiful riverfront drew thousands of fans – the newspaper reported a 15,000 plus crowd… and that’s not even counting the rest of us that enjoyed it all from a distance.

More pictures of the Owensboro Air Show Planes (with lots of the pretty yellow ones….).

Picture of the Day: A Distinguised Chap from Owensboro’s Riverfront Fair

Camel at the Riverfront Fair in Owensboro

This beautiful camel was one of the attractions at Owensboro’s Riverfront Fair this year. My daughter Brittany, who’s an animal lover like her mom, took the pic.  I’ll add other pictures she took to the Owensboro Picture Album either tonight or in the morning.

My beloved St. Louis Cardinals play tonight, so it’s looking more and more like I’ll be adding them in the morning!

Pictures of the Day: Crazy Cool Planes Showing Off Crazy Cool Moves

June 10, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Plane

A few days ago, we were treated to a really cool little air show of sorts as a number of planes flew around the skies over our home here in Owensboro, Kentucky. At first, I just watched them (with my jaw on the ground) with a few other members of my family. Then, thinking they’d make some great pictures, I ran inside for my camera. I underestimated the difficulty of shooting moving objects, especially FAST moving objects!

It reminded me of trying to photograph our daughters when they were little and even less likely to be still. At least they never moved as fast as these planes did (well, one did but only when she’d had too much sugar).

The planes soared, zipped, dove, and dipped and I must have looked like a ballerina on crack trying to follow them with my camera. The results? You got it – pictures that didn’t measure up to the experience, itself, but that are still pretty cool.  Click on any picture shown above or below for a larger version.
