Owl Weekend at Lake Barkley State Resort Park

March 3, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Owl
You will not EVER find a bigger animal and bird lover than the sweet tea chugging Kentuckian on the other side of these words. My husband even set my home office up so I could look out at our bird and squirrel feeders all day.

Is it any wonder some days I get next-to-nothing done?!

If you love birds like I do, I know you’ll want to sign up for Lake Barkley State Resort Park’s “Owl Weekend” April 22-23.

The weekend will include a night trek to see owls, an “Introduction to Owls” program on Friday night and a Saturday night program featuring live birds.

The cost for the entire weekend program is $35, per person, and includes one owl prowl (Friday or Saturday night) and the two programs at 7 p.m. each night. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and bring a flashlight.

Reservations are required and can be made by calling 270-924-1131 or emailing Nick.Edmonds@ky.gov.

Lake Barkley State Resort Park is ridiculously beautiful and has one of our favorite lodges in the entire Kentucky State Park system. It’s an absolute work of art. The restaurant at Lake Barkley State Resort Park is also one of the best in the system. I have not eaten there in a while, but the last time I was there, I remember thinking it was outstanding.

In addition to a lodge, Lake Barkley State Park includes cottages, the Windows on the Water Restaurant, a seasonal campground, 18-hole golf course, fitness center with indoor pool, marina, fishing, tennis courts, hiking trails, gift shop, and recreational and nature programming. The park is near Cadiz and the Land Between the Lakes, at 3500 State Park Road just off Interstate 24. Exit at Highway 68. From the exit go west toward Cadiz and the park.

‘Owl Prowl’ Planned for Pine Mountain State Resort Park Nov. 28

November 3, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pine Mountain State Resort Park

View from Pine Mountain State Resort Park

I know I’ve told you probably 3, 544. 633 times how beautiful Pine Mountain State Resort Park is – but if you’ve seen it for yourself, you know why I’m a broken record. If you haven’t seen the beautiful park set in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, I hope you’ll go soon.

The park is picturesque and downright breathtaking anytime of the year. In fact, if I could be assured of access to gluten free food in the park’s restaurant, I think a weekend at the park’s lodge – looking out at snow-covered mountains would be the experience of a lifetime.

If you’re counting, that makes 3, 544. 634.

If you love owls, the following press release from the Kentucky State Parks is right up your tree.

From the State Parks:

OwlIf you’re a night owl, or if you just want to learn more about owls, make plans to visit Pine Mountain State Resort Park for its “Owl Prowl” the evening of Nov. 28.

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a program on “Silent Predators of the Night” conducted by Mitch Whitaker of the Letcher County Rehabilitation and Education Center with live owls. Guests who plan to take the hike will gather at 8 p.m. in the upper lobby.

The group will drive to the old campground for the owl prowl led by naturalists from Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and Pine Mountain State Resort Park.

Guests should bring a small flashlight or headlamp (red light preferred), binoculars, and appropriate clothing for the weather. The park’s restaurant and lodge will be open and a special lodging rate for owl prowl guests is available. The event is free.

For more information, call 606-337-3066.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park has a 30-room lodge, cottages and a full-service restaurant. It also has a golf course and other recreational opportunities for guests. Pine Mountain State Resort Park is located south of Pineville, on US 25E, 10 miles north of Middlesboro.

Picture of the Day: Barn Owls at Woodland’s Nature Station

February 26, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Barn Owls

The adorable barn owls above are just two of the magnificent residents at Woodland’s Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes (LBL). Before you get the wrong idea about this couple (or the other animals at the Nature Station), you should know that these are animals that could not survive on their own in the wild.  They’re treated with great love and care at Woodland’s and are allowed to live out (and enjoy) their life without fear of predators or starvation.

The workers at Woodland’s treat all of these animals like you and I treat our pets.

Not only are these particular animals protected and cared for, the station provides a wealth of information and education about wildlife – ensuring that generations to come learn to appreciate and protect the beautiful animals God has give us.

A few of the animals you can enjoy and learn about at Woodland’s are:

  • owls
  • eagles
  • wolves
  • deer
  • snakes
  • hawks
  • turkeys
  • bobcats
  • etc!

Be sure to visit and support Kentucky’s gorgeous Land Between the Lakes and become such a regular at Woodland’s Nature Station that the animals know you by name.
