Homeplace Pickin’ Party at Land Between the Lakes 2019

May 26, 2019 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

There’s going to be a Pickin’ Party at the Homeplace and you’re invited!

Philip Steinmetz, great nephew of Grandpa Jones, is among the artists scheduled to perform at this year’s Pickin’ Party. Given his musical roots, he’s ideal for this annual musical celebration of Old Time Music!

Did you know that Louis Marshall “Grandpa” Jones was born in Niagra, Kentucky?

The Pickin’ Party will take place at the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm (4512 The Trace in the Land Between the Lakes) on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9, 2019 from 10 am to 5:30 pm. Special admission price for the day is $7 for ages 13 and up and $5 for ages 5-12. Admission includes entry to the farm and doors open at 9 am.

From the Land Between the Lakes:

Enjoy the best in Old Time Music as it echoes through the hills, hollows and the river valleys of the Homeplace. Old Time Music represents the oral traditions of our ancestors brought with them from the old world, then changed to reflect experiences in their new homeland. Today Old Time Music is our connection to the past; we can hear their voices telling stories of hardships, sorrows and celebrations of good times.

Bring your banjo, guitar, fiddle or harmonica and join in on the fun during open mic and the jamming sessions. Take a stroll around the farm and visit with the farm family and the farm animals about their daily work and enjoy daily programs throughout the farm. Festival food will be available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs or ground blankets.

Artists scheduled to perform include:

  • Phillip Steinmetz, great nephew of Grandpa Jones
  • Fret-less banjo picker and blues guitar performer Mark Dvorak
  • Paducah’s own Wheelhouse Rousters
  • 21st anniversary Pickin Party performance of Dixie Volunteers String Band
  • Common Thread, talented women who perform old time favorites
  • Nathan Blake Lynn and Josh Coffey return as masters of ceremonies

Sponsors for the event are Kentucky Machine & Engineering, Inc. Cadiz, Kentucky; Lake Barkley State Resort Park, Cadiz, Kentucky; and WKMS, Murray, Kentucky.

Other programming includes:

  • Saturday, June 8
1-3 pm – Strong as an Ox
    1 -3 pm – Get Your Homeplace “Driver’s” License
    3:30 pm – Piggin’ Party
  • Sunday, June 9
1– 3 pm – Sweet Jamming at the Single Pen
    1– 3 pm – Game of Graces

Fourth grade students can go to https://everykidinapark.gov/ to receive a free Every Kid in a Park pass, and get their family in for free. For more information, call the Homeplace at 931.232.6457 .

The One-of-a-Kind Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes

May 19, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes

A Beautiful “Resident” with Oxen Bigger Than She Is

They say there’s no such thing as perfect, which only means “they” never spent a day in the Land Between the Lakes.  As for my husband and I… we do every chance we get.

We have certain locations we always hit when we’re in that part of the state and the Homeplace is one of our favorites.

The Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes
See the “Farmer” in the Picture? Super Friendly!
If you’ve never been to the Homeplace, let me tell you this – you’re missing out on a wonderful, beautiful, relaxing… and, yes, perfect, experience. It’s a step back in time to a much more peaceful, simpler, and more innocent time. The working farm transports you back to a time when grass and dirt were the only thing beneath your feet and the only skyscrapers were big, gorgeous trees.

My favorite skyscrapers, by far.

Gorgeous Trees at The Homeplace

There are buildings, which include rooms furnished with time-appropriate furnishings and barns for storing meat or tobacco. While these buildings are fascinating to see and photograph, my absolute favorite part of the Homeplace is the big, beautiful outdoors it sits on. The land and trees aren’t treated as though they’re “in the way” – which is prevalent just about everywhere else in the world. They’re treated as the vital contributors to life that they are.

The Homeplace: A Picture of Relaxation

As you can tell, just by looking at these pictures, the Homeplace is an escape as much as it is an education.  If I had access to food (gluten free, at that) and cold drinks (sweet tea, preferably) I could literally spend an entire day at the Homeplace. There’d be plenty of picture-taking going on and even more time spent watching the adorable pigs, sheep, oxen, horses, ducks, and chickens.

I’d spend more than my fair share of time admiring all of the amazing (and they truly are amazing) trees and plants and talking with the wonderfully friendly people who “work” the farm.

Most of all, I’d just live in the moments and lovingly embrace every single one. The Homeplace is an excellent place to do just that.

Feeding Time for the Pigs at The Homeplace in the LBL

May 17, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pigs at the Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes

Ridiculously Cute Pigs at the Homeplace

You’ll never… ever, ever, ever… find a bigger animal lover than me. When it comes to anything with fur, feathers, and fins, I’m in paradise when I’m in their company. While I have absolute favorites (cats, polar bears, bison, pigs, possums, raccoons, squirrels, all birds..) – truth be told my favorite animal of the moment is the one I’m with.

As you’ll notice, pigs make “the list” – animals I have a special place in my heart for. They’re just so —- darn —– cute!

If you’ve ever been at the Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes during feeding time for the pigs, you already know how fun the experience is. These guys have a very strong appreciation for food and it’s hilarious to watch.

When the young man walked near their pen, the cuties knew it was dinner time. One squealed and came running toward the fence and the other let out what could only be described as an excited “bark!”

They were too cute for their own good.

Adorable Pig at the Homeplace

Expressive Eyes – Waiting Patiently for Dinner!

The Homeplace is such a beautiful and special place.  I love the people dressed in 1850’s clothing, the furniture and buildings, the garden, and of course, the farm animals.

You can read exactly what I think of this special place in Top 10 Things I Love About the Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes.

Feeding Time for the Pigs at the Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes

These Little Guys are 3 Months Old!

The experience (of just blissfully enjoying time in the presence of animals) made me think of something that’s pretty common with some places where animals are involved. The workers often talk about what happens when an animal “retires” – suffice to say it’s a subject that isn’t very fun for animal lovers, if you know where I’m coming from.

The thing is, this particular subject – for people who are accustomed to it – is second-nature. It’s a fact of life and, when they talk about it, they’re as matter of fact as I would be about a trip to Kroger for baby carrots and potatoes. The only problem is – for the rest of us – it’s not run of the mill or remotely common. We don’t (literally) come face to face with our breakfast on a regular basis and is something, if we’re being honest, we’d just as soon not think about.

That’s why I LOVE to see workers simply talk about an animal’s habits, eating preferences, temperaments, etc. Things that could help us appreciate and celebrate the life of the animal and not think about… well…. the animal’s retirement.

Seriously, the vast majority of us simply want to enjoy the animals. That’s why I got such a kick out of the young man at the Homeplace’s obvious enjoyment of the pigs. He also spoke fondly of the Homeplace’s oxen.

They have names for their oxen and I could have listened to him talk about them all day.  Apparently one is a real character and even has been known to fake injuries to get out of work!

The Homeplace provides wonderful homes for these farm animals – plenty of room to roam and run and safe places to sleep. Each time we visit, I’m left with the same thought – they treat them with respect, and that’s something this animal lover strongly appreciates.

I’ll add more pictures of this recent trip to the Homeplace this week. This is one of those places where, as soon as you’re driving away, you’re already thinking about when you can come back.

Things to do this Weekend in Kentucky’s Beautiful Land Between the Lakes

June 18, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Oxen at The Homeplace (Land Between the Lakes)

Oxen at The Homeplace, Land Between the Lakes

The following press release (from the LBL) will show you just how much is going on in the Land Between the Lakes this weekend!

Saturday, June 20

10am-12pm – Barn Loom Weaving – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM

Program included with HP admission. Middle class farms strived to be as self-sufficient as possible; sheep, flax, and cotton were raised, processed, and spun into yarn and thread. Like the 1850’s farm children, lend a hand beating the threads into place or help wind the weft on a shuttle.

1-3pm – Chair Weaving – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM
Program included with HP admission. Ideal for home educators.
Today on the farm we will be weaving durable, new seats for the farm chairs with the strong, fibrous hickory bark we harvested last month. Come see how a herringbone pattern seat is woven and experience a true old- time tradition.

2-2:45pm – Slimy Science – NATURE STATION
Program included with NS admission. *Ideal for home educators.
Did you ever wonder how some reptiles and amphibians can hear with no ears? Or how to tell if a turtle is a boy or girl? Come face-to-face with some slimy and scaly critters as we investigate these and other questions through fun activities and demonstrations.

{Continued beneath the sunset!}

Sunset on the Water

Sunset on Honker Lake (from a Canoe Trip we recently enjoyed!)

6:30-9pm – Sunset Kayak Trip – NATURE STATION
$20 per canoe. Participants must be age 13 or above. Cost does not include NS admission. NS closes at 5pm. Registration limited. Reservation required. Call 270-924-2020 to reserve your space. Join us for a relaxed paddle as we explore the nooks and crannies of a Lake Barkley scenic bay. We will search the waters and shorelines for wildlife such as osprey, eagles, beavers, egrets, frogs, and songbirds.

5:30 & 7pm – Laser Light Shows – GOLDEN POND PLANETARIUM
Listen to your favorite retro, country, pop, or classic rock artists as laser lights dance across the 40-foot theater dome. Even if you have seen our laser shows before, you have never seen them like this. Our new laser projector makes them more amazing! All seats $7. Also, see Laser Shows Tue. & Fri. evenings

Sunday, June 21

1-3:30pm – Let’s Play & Ice Cream Treat – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM
Program included with HP admission. *Ideal for home educators.
When there was leisure time in 1850, children played with homemade toys or enjoyed games. Today, let’s jump rope, throw washers, and toss corncob darts. Then let’s have some ice cream, but wait in 1850, so there’s a little work involved before anyone could enjoy that special summer treat. Take your turn at the ice cream bucket and we all can enjoy the reward.

2-2:30pm – Batty for Bats – NATURE STATION
Program free with NS admission. *Ideal for Home Educators.
Let’s get a little batty as we learn about one of nature’s most fascinating, but unfamiliar creatures, bats! Meet “Betty the Old Bat,” who will teach you a fun bat song and challenge you with some bat trivia. Finally, step outside to look and listen for live bats roosting in our backyard bat boxes.

June 2, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Homeplace (Land Between the Lakes)

Picture yourself kicked back listening to bluegrass music at The Homeplace!

It’s almost time for the 17th Annual Pickin’ Party Old-time Music Festival at The Homeplace. The fun and music will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 13th and 14th (2015) from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. Doors open at 9:30.

Most families just make a day of it and many come back both days! Relax under a shade tree and hear bluegrass, string bands, folk music, finger picking, and more.

From The Homeplace:

Stroll through our historic buildings and gardens and visit with staff as music lofts in the background. Fun activities planned for the kids and jam sessions for the adults, so bring your banjo, guitar, fiddle, harmonica, or other instruments to play! Bring lawn chairs, ground blankets, and picnics to relax under a shade tree. A food vendor will be onsite. Mandolin maker Mike Holmes will be on site working his craft. Mike learned furniture making from his grandfather, but creating hand-carved mandolins with a mature and balanced bluegrass sound feeds his passion. Stop by and see his works of art!

Admission:

  • 5 through 12 years: $5
  • 4 and under enter free
