Cave Tours at Carter Caves this Summer

May 29, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Carter Caves State Resort Park

Carter Caves State Resort Park is one of Kentucky’s most beautiful parks. The entire region is just gorgeous – spring, summer, winter, and fall.

Carter Caves gives you an opportunity to literally get off of the beaten path and have extra special fun this summer! Enjoy walking (or even crawling) cave tours and make memories that’ll last a lifetime.

The park offers daily cave tours and more tour times will be added starting June 13.

The cave tours include:

Cascade Cave

Cascade Cave is one of the largest of over 200 caves in Carter County and is noted for its large chambers and numerous cave formations. Highlights of the tour include the reflecting pool in the Lake Room, the unique cave formations in the Cathedral Room and an underground waterfall over 30 feet high. The tour lasts about 75 minutes and covers a distance of about ¾ mile.

Ticket sales stop 15 minutes before Cascade Cave tours. A short drive from the welcome center is required and transportation is not provided. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are free.

X-Cave

The tour begins at the welcome center. Some of the highlighted features include turkey rock, the pipe organ, and the giant column which is the largest cave formation found at the park. Be aware of your surroundings and you will discover how this cave became known as “X-Cave.” The X-Cave tour covers about ¼  mile and lasts about 45 minutes. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are free.

Saltpetre Cave

Saltpetre Cave is considered by many historians to be the site of the earliest industry in the area. The cave was used during the War of 1812 as a source of the major ingredient in making gunpowder and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lantern tours are also offered throughout the summer. Saltpetre Cave covers about ½ mile, and the tour last about 60 minutes.  Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are free.

Carter Caves also offers wild cave tours which are more challenging and offer more adventure for guests. They include:

Saltpetre Kids Crawl

The Saltpeter Kid’s Crawl is a great way to introduce your child to the
adventurous sport of caving. Your child will be crawling on hands and knees in small dark passages that will be lit by only the flashlight provided. The kids will get dirty as the passages are rocky and dusty. To participate in the tour your child must be between 6-12 years oldand wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Guardians must sign waivers for the children. Helmets, headlamps and kneepads are provided. Tickets are $10 per child.

Bat Cave Walking Tour

Bat Cave is the longest cave found within the park.  The Bat Cave Walking Tour is a wild cave, so the trip is considered rugged and strenuous. The cave is  undeveloped, it is not electrically lit and there are no handrails or steps. Plan to get wet and muddy on this tour. You must pass a squeeze test before you purchase your tickets. You must be at least 6 years old and an adult must accompany those under 15 years old. Guardians must sign waivers for children under 18. Helmets and flashlights are provided. Tickets are $12 per person.

Bat Cave Crawling Tour

The Bat Cave Crawling Tour is considered the most strenuous and most adventurous tour offered at Carter Caves. You will be crawling and walking through muddy and wet passages. You must be at least 12 years old and an adult must accompany those under 15. Guardians must sign waivers for children under 18. Coveralls, helmets, headlamps and knee pads are provided. Tickets are $30 per person.

A crawling tour of Saltpetre Cave

A crawling tour of Saltpetre Cave!

Saltpetre Crawling Tour

You will be crawling on your hands and knees and even doing some belly crawls during this tour. The cave is cold, rocky and dusty. This is considered a strenuous and rugged caving trip and may not be a good choice for some folks.  You must pass a squeeze test before you purchase your tickets. You should be wearing shorts and a T-shirt under the coveralls and closed-toed shoes with good tread. You must be at least 12 years old and an adult mustaccompany those under 15. Guardians must sign waivers for children under 18. Coveralls, helmets, headlamps and knee pads are provided. Tickets are $30 per person.

For more information about cave tours and the park, be sure to visit the Kentucky State Parks’ Carter Caves State Resort Park section.

Besides the cave tours, Carter Caves offers canoe trips, hiking, golf, swimming, gem mining for kids, mini-golf, and fishing. Carter Caves also has a lodge, cottages and restaurant. For more information, call the park at 1-800-325-0059 or 1-606-286-4411

To get to Carter Caves State Resort Park from Interstate 64 East, take Exit 161 (Olive Hill exit). Turn left off the exit onto U.S. 60 east. Go approximately 2 miles and turn left on KY 182 north. Park entrance is 3 miles from the left turn onto KY 182 north.

Canoeing on Honker Lake… One of a Kind Experience

May 4, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Canoeing on Honker Lake

Canoeing on Honker Lake

I hate to brag, but I have a couple of phobias. One is water – as in anything outside of a bathtub or wading pool.  Another is snakes – as in… well, as in snakes. I once ran screaming from the room while chased with a rubber snake – all the while knowing it was a rubber snake.

I’m reasonable like that.

And yet, with phobias in tow, I had an absolutely wonderful time canoeing on Honker Lake this past weekend. It was my first time in a canoe since I was a little girl at Camp Currie, and I have to admit I was pretty nervous at first. For one thing, the canoeing would not be taking place in a bathtub and for another, common sense told me snakes were in the neighborhood.

Funny thing is, by the end of the trip, I began counting the days until I could get back in a canoe on Honker Lake! Yes, I saw a few snakes as they swam in the water – furiously trying to get away from the canoes. Don’t tell anyone, but I thought they looked pretty cute with their heads poked up as their bodies hurried them along.  They were more afraid of us than I could ever hope to be of them.

That’s an arrangement that works for me.

Our guides pointed out Osprey nests, ospreys, eagle nests, eagles, herons, Giant Canada Geese, beavers, beaver lodges, and more. Seeing these beautiful animals and birds so close was a beautiful experience.

You just haven’t lived until you’ve been within feet of a beaver slapping the water with his tail so hard that he lifts his body! These intelligent, industrious, and beautiful animals are really something to behold.

As luck would have it, it’s kind of difficult to hold a paddle AND work a camera while staring in wide wonder all at the same time – so I’m afraid my pictures of the eagles and beavers didn’t turn out.

You can rent canoes and kayaks from The Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes to go exploring on your own – but I’d highly recommend first taking advantage of one of their guided tours. In these tours, you’re in your own canoe as are others in the group. The tour guides are in their own canoe and offer valuable information on wildlife, canoeing, and the lake, itself.

I’d like to take a minute or two to give a shout out to all the workers and volunteers in the Land Between the Lakes that I’ve ever encountered. They have been exceptional each and every time.  There’s something that separates them from most workers and volunteers you encounter and that’s passion. Each individual I have encountered in my MANY years of MANY Land Between the Lakes visits has obviously not only cared a great, great deal about Kentucky and the Land Between the Lakes – they’ve had a palpable passion for this region, its wildlife, its conservation, its birds, and its guests.

Their knowledge, upbeat attitude, friendliness, and passion are incredible assets to the Land Between the Lakes. They are above reproach as ambassadors for a region that’s as special as they are.

Read more about Honker Lake on Genuine Kentucky and check out the other pictures from our canoe trip on Honker Lake as well. Trust me on this one – canoeing on Honker Lake is something you’ll want to move to the top of your to do list.

Kentucky State Parks Family Adventure Quest 2015

January 28, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kentucky Family Adventure Quest
Kentucky provides every member of your family with countless fun things to do, beauty to see, and adventure to be had.  A family favorite, Kentucky State Parks Family Adventure Quest, has a fun new twist this year, so grab your calendar, grab your map, and… whatever you do… grab your camera!

2015 marks the 10th year for the Kentucky State Parks Family Adventure Quest – the digital photo scavenger hunt for families or friends.

This year’s edition has a new twist. Teams of two to six members choose between an eastern or western booklet. This doesn’t mean you only get to explore half the state, it just means that the quests that require visiting a specific park will only be in the half of the state you choose.

That still leaves more than two thirds of the challenges that can be answered at your choice of parks. For example, a non-park-specific challenge may ask for a photo of your team building a sand sculpture at a Kentucky State Park beach. The beach you choose is up to you!

Teams have until Dec. 1, 2015, to complete as many quests as they like in an effort to have fun and win prizes. It’s a great goal-oriented way to explore the natural and historical resources of the nation’s finest park system. A digital camera is necessary to capture your team’s fun along your journey, and your photos just might show up on the park website or Facebook page. In fact, you can earn a bonus point just for sharing a picture and quest experience to the parks’ Facebook page on your own this year.

Participants from 5 months old to 87 years young enjoyed the quest in 2014, and once they start, many teams repeat year after year.  Thirty-eight of the 137 teams that signed up in 2014 were repeat participants. One team has participated for eight years now!

Click here to read an article in Kentucky Monthly about one family’s great adventure!

By correctly completing just 10 quests, a team will receive a certificate for a one-night stay at the park lodge of its choice (Sunday through Thursday) and free passes to park museums or forts. Complete 20 quests and receive the lodge stay and passes, plus a $25 Kentucky State Parks gift card. Complete 25 of the 29 quests and get the lodge stay, passes and a $50 gift card!

Teams have until Dec. 1, 2015 to submit their quest booklet and CD of photos. As few as four park visits are required to earn the first prize level, if you do your homework.

A $15 registration fee gets you the quest booklet, a commemorative cap, a kite (yes, to be used for a quest!), bonus BOGO (buy one, get one) coupons for some of the destinations involved, and informational materials to help you along your way.

More details and registration forms can be downloaded at www.parks.ky.gov (look for the Family Adventure Quest button), where you can peruse the photo gallery of past participants.  You can also pick up a registration form at any Kentucky State Park starting in February.

16 Things to do in Kentucky Before the End of Summer

July 24, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Bobcat at The Nature Station (Land Between the Lakes)

This has been a tougher list to put together than I originally thought, simply because there are SO many things to see in Kentucky!  I actually began this article as “Top 3 Things to Do in Kentucky Before the End of Summer,” then I realized I was completely nuts if I thought I could get it down to just 3.  Then I bumped it up to a “Top 10” list and realized I still needed more.  I decided to stick with 16 because, as a UK Basketball fan, it makes me think of March Madness (since we’re regulars in the Sweet 16).

Even with this generous number, I still had a lot of places I wanted to include – but I had to draw the line somewhere, right?

Aside from number one, these aren’t in any particular order. You’ll soon see why number 1 is extra special.

Here’s my current list of things to do and see in Kentucky before the end of summer.

  1. The Nature Station (Land Between the Lakes). The Red Wolves at the Nature Station recently had a baby and she’s BEYOND adorable. Funny thing about babies, they don’t stay babies for long, and if you want to see her, you really need to get on the ball!  Red wolf pups are incredibly rare and this could, literally, be your one chance to see one. She won’t call the Nature Station home forever. In an effort to protect the species, she’ll be moved to a different home when she’s old enough. Don’t let this opportunity get away from you. See Nature Station for more information.  While I’m anxious for you to see the beautiful red wolves, The Nature Station also has a lot of other wonderful animals and birds. Just look at the beautiful bobcat above! Animal lovers and bird lovers will never want to leave – trust me, I speak from experience.
  2. Downtown Paducah. If a city’s downtown strikes you as a peculiar item on a top ten things to do in Kentucky list, that just tells me you haven’t spent much time in downtown Paducah. This city’s downtown is artsy, eclectic, vibrant, and alive. There’s a wonderful vibe to downtown Paducah and you can feel it in the air. There are endless shops to visit, a wonderful coffee shop, and some amazing restaurants.  The best way (I’d go so far as to say the only real way) to enjoy downtown Paducah is on foot – so park your car, put on your comfortable shoes, and enjoy every single square foot.  Be sure to check out the riverfront area – it’s, literally, a work of art.
  3. Pine Mountain State Resort Park.  There isn’t a State Park you shouldn’t see before the end of summer, because they’re each amazing in their own special way. Pine Mountain, with its setting in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, is what you could call MUST SEE. The beautiful views can’t possibly be described or even truly appreciated in pictures. It’s something you have to experience for yourself.
  4. Louisville Zoo. We have it good in Kentucky for many reasons but one that always comes to mind almost immediately when I think of the riches of the Bluegrass is the Louisville Zoo. It isn’t just special, it’s extra special and every Kentuckian should be downright proud of it. This zoo has a lot of exhibits and animals you won’t find at other zoos. See Louisville Zoo for hours, directions, and tons of information about their beautiful animals.
  5. Visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory. If you’re a baseball fan, you’ll kick yourself for not visiting the Louisville Slugger Museum sooner. Before you even step outside, the trip’s already worth it when you see the biggest bat in the world. Out front is a 6-story high replica of Babe Ruth’s bat!  See Louisville Slugger Museum for hours, tour information, and to find out how you can get a free mini bat. Plan your trip just right and you can enjoy Numbers 4, 5, and 6 (below) all in one epic day or weekend.
  6. See a Louisville Bats Game! The Bats are the triple-A minor league baseball affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The stadium in downtown Louisville is worth seeing, itself, but add in a great baseball game with future MLB stars and it’s a night (or afternoon) you’ll never forget. We were season ticket holders for years when we lived in the Louisville area – before they became Cincy affiliates and even before they moved to the new gorgeous stadium downtown.  We’ve always been extra proud of the fact that we were there when the new stadium opened. Heck, we pretty much lived there every summer for years.  And loved every minute of it.
  7. Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. I’ve grouped these two together because they’re so close to one another, making a special trip to see one without seeing the other would be nuts. Be sure you visit both Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park and Lake Barkley State Resort Park – maybe you could enjoy lunch at one and supper at the other, with hours of sight-seeing and picture-taking in between.
  8. Grand Rivers, Kentucky. Grand Rivers is the beautiful village located right between the two lakes named above.  Grand Rivers has something for everyone and I mean everyone. Kids, adults, and seniors will fall in love with everything about this little town. From the Fudge Factory (can you say delicious homemade candy?!) to Grand Rivers Variety and from Green Turtle Bay to Patti’s 1880 Settlement (one of the most famous restaurants in Kentucky), Grand Rivers fits more fun into their small area than a lot of big cities do that are 10 times the size. Located right between the lakes and just minutes from the Land Between the Lakes, it’s a wonder “Grand Rivers” isn’t at the very top of everyone’s summer vacation list.
  9. The Elk and Bison Prairie (Land Between the Lakes) – There just isn’t anyplace else that’s quite like this 700 acre, enclosed prairie. It’s phenomenal! You can drive through this beautiful prairie as many times as you want, looking for elk, bison, turkeys, eagles, and countless other animals and birds that call this beautiful place home. See Elk and Bison Prairie for more information.
  10. Take a Boat Tour on Rough River Lake – Beautiful Rough River Lake is a gorgeous place to spend the afternoon. We love to spend hours at Rough River Dam State Resort Park – especially when it includes one of their fun, relaxing, and thoroughly enjoyable boat tours. Call (270) 257-2311 for information and/or visit Rough River Dam State Resort Park.
  11. Take Tours of an Entirely Different Nature with Cave Tours – Visit Carter Caves for fascinating tours the whole family will be talking about for years.  This is a gorgeous part of Kentucky with scenery that’s synonymous with Kentucky Beauty.
  12. Visit the BBQ Capital of the World – Owensboro, Kentucky. We have more than just delicious barbecue here in Owensboro, we have a renovated Riverfront that we’re awfully proud of. There are still some renovations being done downtown (two more hotels are being built on the riverfront) but Smother’s Park on the River is really something to see. Kids will enjoy a playground that pretty much trumps all other playgrounds and adults won’t be able to get enough of the relaxing beauty of the river. It’s a great place to spend time before AND after enjoying a great meal at Old Hickory, Ole South, or Moonlite. When you visit Old Hickory, be sure to try their “Sweet Heat” sauce. It’ll blow your mind.
  13. See The Stephen Foster Story in Bardstown.  If you’ve never seen this wonderful musical, you have to make sure you do so this summer. If you HAVE seen it…. go again! Visit The Stephen Foster Story online for shows and ticket information.
  14. Two words: Mammoth Cave. I think it’d be pretty interesting to know the number of Kentuckians who’ve never been to world famous National Park in our own backyard. Make this the year you see what all the fuss is about. See Mammoth Cave for more information.
  15. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Park.  President Lincoln isn’t just the best known and most loved Kentuckian of all time, he’s arguably one of the best known and most loved people of all time. There’s something positively magical about walking where he once walked and the feeling isn’t just limited to history buffs like myself.  This is an extra special – remarkable, even – place and if you haven’t been in a while, isn’t it time you went back? If you’ve NEVER been… then it’s way past time for you to do so!
  16. Your Hometown.  One of the most memorable places you can visit is your childhood.  If you grew up in a Kentucky town different from the one you currently live it, do yourself a favor and go “home” this summer. Write down places you want to see (elementary school, city park, library, middle school, high school, old neighborhoods, grocery stores, favorite restaurants…) the night before, then make a day of it.  There’s really no place quite like a trip down memory lane.

Honorable Mentions: As I said above, ALL Kentucky State Parks are worth visiting and visiting often. They’re part of our history and we should all take great pride and interest in them.   Visit the Kentucky State Parks official website and find parks that offer exactly what your family is looking for – golf, tennis, swimming, Frisbee golf (Lake Cumberland), boating, fishing, special events… the Kentucky State Parks have everything your family could possibly want or need.  And your visits keep your money in Kentucky.

How sweet’s that?
