Things to do this Weekend in Kentucky’s Beautiful Land Between the Lakes

June 18, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Oxen at The Homeplace (Land Between the Lakes)

Oxen at The Homeplace, Land Between the Lakes

The following press release (from the LBL) will show you just how much is going on in the Land Between the Lakes this weekend!

Saturday, June 20

10am-12pm – Barn Loom Weaving – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM

Program included with HP admission. Middle class farms strived to be as self-sufficient as possible; sheep, flax, and cotton were raised, processed, and spun into yarn and thread. Like the 1850’s farm children, lend a hand beating the threads into place or help wind the weft on a shuttle.

1-3pm – Chair Weaving – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM
Program included with HP admission. Ideal for home educators.
Today on the farm we will be weaving durable, new seats for the farm chairs with the strong, fibrous hickory bark we harvested last month. Come see how a herringbone pattern seat is woven and experience a true old- time tradition.

2-2:45pm – Slimy Science – NATURE STATION
Program included with NS admission. *Ideal for home educators.
Did you ever wonder how some reptiles and amphibians can hear with no ears? Or how to tell if a turtle is a boy or girl? Come face-to-face with some slimy and scaly critters as we investigate these and other questions through fun activities and demonstrations.

{Continued beneath the sunset!}

Sunset on the Water

Sunset on Honker Lake (from a Canoe Trip we recently enjoyed!)

6:30-9pm – Sunset Kayak Trip – NATURE STATION
$20 per canoe. Participants must be age 13 or above. Cost does not include NS admission. NS closes at 5pm. Registration limited. Reservation required. Call 270-924-2020 to reserve your space. Join us for a relaxed paddle as we explore the nooks and crannies of a Lake Barkley scenic bay. We will search the waters and shorelines for wildlife such as osprey, eagles, beavers, egrets, frogs, and songbirds.

5:30 & 7pm – Laser Light Shows – GOLDEN POND PLANETARIUM
Listen to your favorite retro, country, pop, or classic rock artists as laser lights dance across the 40-foot theater dome. Even if you have seen our laser shows before, you have never seen them like this. Our new laser projector makes them more amazing! All seats $7. Also, see Laser Shows Tue. & Fri. evenings

Sunday, June 21

1-3:30pm – Let’s Play & Ice Cream Treat – HOMEPLACE 1850’s FARM
Program included with HP admission. *Ideal for home educators.
When there was leisure time in 1850, children played with homemade toys or enjoyed games. Today, let’s jump rope, throw washers, and toss corncob darts. Then let’s have some ice cream, but wait in 1850, so there’s a little work involved before anyone could enjoy that special summer treat. Take your turn at the ice cream bucket and we all can enjoy the reward.

2-2:30pm – Batty for Bats – NATURE STATION
Program free with NS admission. *Ideal for Home Educators.
Let’s get a little batty as we learn about one of nature’s most fascinating, but unfamiliar creatures, bats! Meet “Betty the Old Bat,” who will teach you a fun bat song and challenge you with some bat trivia. Finally, step outside to look and listen for live bats roosting in our backyard bat boxes.

Canoeing on Honker Lake… One of a Kind Experience

May 4, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Canoeing on Honker Lake

Canoeing on Honker Lake

I hate to brag, but I have a couple of phobias. One is water – as in anything outside of a bathtub or wading pool.  Another is snakes – as in… well, as in snakes. I once ran screaming from the room while chased with a rubber snake – all the while knowing it was a rubber snake.

I’m reasonable like that.

And yet, with phobias in tow, I had an absolutely wonderful time canoeing on Honker Lake this past weekend. It was my first time in a canoe since I was a little girl at Camp Currie, and I have to admit I was pretty nervous at first. For one thing, the canoeing would not be taking place in a bathtub and for another, common sense told me snakes were in the neighborhood.

Funny thing is, by the end of the trip, I began counting the days until I could get back in a canoe on Honker Lake! Yes, I saw a few snakes as they swam in the water – furiously trying to get away from the canoes. Don’t tell anyone, but I thought they looked pretty cute with their heads poked up as their bodies hurried them along.  They were more afraid of us than I could ever hope to be of them.

That’s an arrangement that works for me.

Our guides pointed out Osprey nests, ospreys, eagle nests, eagles, herons, Giant Canada Geese, beavers, beaver lodges, and more. Seeing these beautiful animals and birds so close was a beautiful experience.

You just haven’t lived until you’ve been within feet of a beaver slapping the water with his tail so hard that he lifts his body! These intelligent, industrious, and beautiful animals are really something to behold.

As luck would have it, it’s kind of difficult to hold a paddle AND work a camera while staring in wide wonder all at the same time – so I’m afraid my pictures of the eagles and beavers didn’t turn out.

You can rent canoes and kayaks from The Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes to go exploring on your own – but I’d highly recommend first taking advantage of one of their guided tours. In these tours, you’re in your own canoe as are others in the group. The tour guides are in their own canoe and offer valuable information on wildlife, canoeing, and the lake, itself.

I’d like to take a minute or two to give a shout out to all the workers and volunteers in the Land Between the Lakes that I’ve ever encountered. They have been exceptional each and every time.  There’s something that separates them from most workers and volunteers you encounter and that’s passion. Each individual I have encountered in my MANY years of MANY Land Between the Lakes visits has obviously not only cared a great, great deal about Kentucky and the Land Between the Lakes – they’ve had a palpable passion for this region, its wildlife, its conservation, its birds, and its guests.

Their knowledge, upbeat attitude, friendliness, and passion are incredible assets to the Land Between the Lakes. They are above reproach as ambassadors for a region that’s as special as they are.

Read more about Honker Lake on Genuine Kentucky and check out the other pictures from our canoe trip on Honker Lake as well. Trust me on this one – canoeing on Honker Lake is something you’ll want to move to the top of your to do list.

Kentucky Pictures of the Day Starring Beautiful Elk from the Elk & Bison Prairie

May 21, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Elk at the Elk & Bison Prairie
We recently spent a beautiful day in one of the greatest places on earth – Kentucky’s Land Between the Lakes. We visited all three state parks in the area (Lake Barkley, Kentucky Dam Village, and Kenlake) and had a wonderful supper at the Willow Pond in Aurora.

Although we didn’t make it to The Homeplace or Woodland’s Nature Station (a few of our other favorite stops) on this particular trip, we did spend a great deal of time in the Elk & Bison Prairie.

Like I’ve said before, I never want to leave the prairie and this time was no exception.

For just $5 a vehicle, you can ride around the prairie as many times as you want (until they close, of course) and riding around frequently and slowly is the key to seeing as many of the residents as possible. Another tip of the trade – we tend to have the best luck in the late afternoon hours to early evening.

We normally see a lot more bison than elk but, on this particular trip we saw A LOT more elk than bison. A LOT more. Seriously, these beauties were practically everywhere we looked.

In a few pictures, I tried to include our vehicle’s rear view mirror in the shot so you could get an idea of just how close you can often get to these amazing animals.

We also saw a great number of turkeys this trip and I even saw an eagle – which elicited such a squeal from me it’s a wonder the elk didn’t run and hide. As luck would have it, my camera was “down” when I spied the gorgeous eagle soaring above our car but it was just as well. Since I didn’t have to worry about photographing him (her?), I had time to just simply take it all in and thank God for making such a beautiful world.

And I did just that.

I’ll post more pictures of the prairie, and the turkeys (of course!) tomorrow. I promised the elk this post would be all about them and I have no intention of breaking my promise. Can you imagine the bad karma in that?

Enjoy the pictures and, better still, plan a trip to the Land Between the Lakes and the Elk & Bison Prairie S-O-O-N!

Top 10 Things I Love About The Homeplace in the Land Between the Lakes!

May 12, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The Homeplace in Kentucky's Land Between the Lakes

Everything about Kentucky’s Land Between the Lakes is amazing – from the quiet, peaceful drive along the trace to the always enjoyable and exciting Homeplace… and everything in between.  Over the next month, I’m going to focus a lot of posts (and pictures) on one of the most beautiful places in the world, The LBL. As you’ll see, there in an unlimited number of things to do and see in the Land Between the Lakes.

Today I want to shine a big bright spotlight on one of the coolest places in the Land Between the Lakes region, The Homeplace.  The Homeplace is a “living history farm” depicting life in the mid 19th century. While there are a lot of things I love about The Homeplace – below are my top 10.

My Top 10 Favorite Things About The Homeplace:

  1. Uncommonly friendly people.  How friendly, warm, and welcoming are they? Well – you just read the proof. The Homeplace is a gorgeous and adventuresome place and the first thought in my mind when I sat down to do the top 10 was the friendliness of the staff. They’re genuinely delighted to see you walk through those doors and thrilled to share their special place with you and your family.
  2. The animals. As an animal lover extraordinaire, I can never get enough of the time spent looking at, photographing, and even talking to the wonderful farm animals at The Homeplace.  The people who work with these animals treat them as beloved pets and I don’t just respect that fact, I’m in love with it.
  3. The Homeplace. The 1850’s Homeplace, itself, is a real marvel. It’s fascinating (and humbling) to see how men and women lived and had to go about their chores in the 1850’s. You return home with a resolve to never complain about doing laundry or vacuuming ever again. Well, at least not for a couple of months. As you walk along the farm, you’ll also find gorgeous flowers, plants, and vegetables. I once spent about 15 minutes admiring butterflies on zinnias. The world will never create anything to rival the beauty God creates. Not even close.
  4. Special Events.  There is always… always.. something going on down on the farm.  May 25 (2014), for example, is Frolic on the Farm – a favorite with kids! They get to run amok and play games children enjoyed long before they were even thought about!  Other special events and days include Children’s Day on the Farm, Taste of the Homeplace (a personal favorite), Making Charcoal at Home, How Does Your Garden Grow, Make Your Own Corn Shuck Doll (I need this one – Seriously, how cool would it be to give people their own Corn Shuck doll you’d made at Christmas?), Mysteries at the Homeplace Museum, Independence Day Celebration, Red, White, and Blue Dying, History Mystery, Ice Cream Social (!!!), Spring Cleaning, and so on and on. As I said, there is always something going on. Another personal favorite is the Pickin’ Party Old-Time Music Festival – the 2014 Pickin’ Party will be June 14 and June 15. Mark your calendars!  Events often featured historians and special guests who share fascinating information and stories – they’re so knowledgeable that you’d swear they must be time travelers. Keep an eye on Genuine Kentucky and on the LBL Homeplace Events Page for up to the minute event listings.  Whether you plan your next trip to the Land Between the Lakes around a special Homeplace Event or you’re checking to see what’s going on during your next visit, you won’t be disappointed.
  5. Gift Shop. My husband’s probably thinking, “Leave it to her to work shopping into a top 10 list…” but how can I not? The gift shop at The Homeplace is like an adventure itself. I actually check it twice – once when we get there (before entering the farm) and once as we’re leaving. A girl can never be too sure – I mean, what if they added something while I was “down on the farm?!”  It’s always best to check.  There are wonderful Kentucky Food products, games, toys, figurines, stuffed animals. mugs, mementos, and more. A lot more.  It’s a lot of fun to see what they’ve come up with next.
  6. History comes alive! As a history buff, I enjoy reading about history as much as the next buff, but there’s a lot to be said for actually stepping into history for yourself.  Not only does the Homeplace farm take you back in time, the “residents” (dressed in period clothing) go about their chores and even interact with you. They’re stepping back in time with you as guides and it’s an experience unlike any other.
  7. Educational Center. Some people enjoy walking through the Educational Center before the farm and others prefer doing so after their visit to the farm.  Either way, it’s a great way to further your educational experience. On hot summer days, I find myself heading in to the wonderful crisp air conditioning to “brush up on my history.” It’s all about timing. And, yes, I check out the gift shop again as well.
  8. South Bison Range.  While I love all animals, bison are a big (literally) favorite. In addition to the LBL’s Elk & Bison Prairie, the South Bison Range allows bison the privilege to roam free on two adjacent 100-acre pastures and allows us to watch them do so. The South Bison Range is located in the southern end of LBL alongside The Trace, just up the road from The Homeplace. You’ll want to bring your camera and your binoculars for the best experience.  I took the picture below on our last trip to the South Bison Range. The bison were putting on such a great show rolling in the dust, my husband had a hard time getting me to budge. Fortunately for him, I eventually got hungry, so we headed off to eat catfish at The Willow Pond!
  9. Two Words: Kids Unplugged. As I sat down to write about my favorite things about The Homeplace, I closed my eyes and imagined myself there. I thought about the experiences that never fail to make me smile, inside and outside.  Some of the most precious pictures that kept running through my head were of children running and playing – pointing things out to one another and to their parents. Staring in awe at the huge pigs in the playpen, asking questions about the oxen, and trying to take everything in at once the way kids do. Once a little girl asked her dad if he’d ever ridden an ox. I could tell he desperately wanted to tell her that he had, but, alas, he had to admit that he hadn’t. He DID, however, have a great backup plan. He told her he’d ridden lots of horses, and that impressed her enough. I have a confession to make, the sight of kids in restaurants and other public places always looking down at their cellphones or iPads kind of makes me sad. Many of these kids are plugged into something almost all day – tvs, computers, phones, etc. To see kids (of all ages) unplugged and enjoying the beautiful outdoors is something that will always take my breath away.
  10. Adults Reminiscing and Reflecting. One of the things I love most about my visits to The Homeplace is the fact that, without fail, you always see and hear adults reminiscing and re-visiting their childhood. You’ll hear older men and women talking about washing clothes by hand, gardening, and doing other farm-related chores. An older lady (who wasn’t even part of the staff) once told me how she and her sisters would always help their mom churn butter and that it was some of her sweetest memories. The expression on her face let me know that she was, at that moment, back on her own farm with her mom and it was nothing short of beautiful. I’ve also heard a lot of men talking about their experiences growing up on farms.  Even adults who are in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s are taken back to a simpler time. We remember playing outdoors when our imaginations provided all the entertainment we needed. The sounds of nature and the beautiful surroundings take you back – so much so that when you leave the farm and step back into the Gift Shop/Welcoming Center, it’s almost like you’re stepping back into the present.

Granted, no one wants to actually live in the past, but, man, is it ever an extra special place to visit.

Picture of the Day: Too Much Cuteness for One Little Guy (or Gal) to Be Sitting On

August 16, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Flying Squirrel at the Nature Station, Land Between the Lakes
Adorable Flying Squirrel a the Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes.

The little guy (or gal) above is a flying squirrel. The cutie is just one of the many, many, many precious residents at the Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes. I’ve said it a million times, but please go to The Nature Station as soon as… and as often as… you can.Ã?  Anytime we’re in the area, my husband knows it’s one of the places I can’t pass up. It and the Elk & Bison Prairie are a couple of my favorite places in the whole world (click here for pictures of each).

The Nature Station is a lot of fun for kids and adults, alike. If you love birds and animals and love to get up close and personal with them, The Nature Station is someplace they’ll have to pull you away from.

The picture above was taken by my husband on a trip to the Nature Station last year.Ã?  I’ve found that it’s best if he takes the pictures at the Nature Station and Elk & Bison Prairie… I’m far too busy ooooooh-ing and ahhhh-ing.
