The gorgeous bobcat at Woodlands Nature Station

One of our favorite places to spend time in the Land Between the Lakes is the Woodlands Nature Station.  Whenever we’re in the area (which is often), the Nature Station is one of our first stops.

The Wildlife Celebration at Woodlands Nature Station will be held Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday-Monday, May 23-25. Visit with Smokey Bear, gobble with turkeys, and have up-close encounters with native wildlife in the Nature Station’s backyard at Land Between The Lakes. All programs are included with Nature Station admission.

“Visitors can learn about animals that make this area their home. We’ll show you how to help preserve wildlife habitats and why it is important,” said Darrin Samborski, Environmental Education Specialist at Land Between The Lakes. “We’re also offering two family canoe trips that weekend for people to view wildlife from the water. We usually see a lot of native birds, mammals, and reptiles along the shoreline and on the water during these outings.”

Weekend Nature Station Events:

Saturday-Monday, May 23-25

  • 10am-4pm                        “I Spy Up High” Scavenger Hunt

Spring Break Programs at The Nature Station (Land Between the Lakes)

March 11, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

One of the beuatiful owls at the Nature Station

The beauty above is just one of the wonderful owls at Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes. The weather’s heating up (slowly but surely), and that means there’ll be A LOT going on in the LBL.

This following LBL event has passed, but you can find up-to-the-minute Kentucky Events on our Events Page. Also, check out some of the best things to do in Kentucky… most importantly, just get out there and enjoy our beautiful state!

Below is information the LBL would like to share with you regarding spring break. Naturally they have a lot going on and would love for you and your family to visit!

From the Land Between the Lakes:

Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area offers a variety of family-friendly programs for all ages at Woodlands Nature Station on weekdays during most of the spring breaks in the area.

Spring Break programs will be offered at 2pm, March 11-April 12. The Nature Station is open 10am-5pm Wednesday-Sunday, March and November and 7 days, April-October.

These special programs offer families up-close encounters with animals such as snakes, turkeys, owls, and turtles. Many of the Nature Station’s weekend programs during this time period will also be geared towards families with children.

Come out and enjoy Nature Station’s wildlife programs and outdoor activities, said Aviva Yasgur, Naturalist at the Nature Station. These programs offer family outdoor adventure while providing valuable learning experiences.

Purchase an LBL Fun Card this spring for discounted general admissions to our day-use facilities. Fun Cards with 10 visits cost $35 and can be used at Nature Station, Homeplace, and Golden Pond Planetarium in any combination of visits. Check out the calendar of events to learn about programs happening throughout the year at Nature Station and across Land Between The Lakes.

Hummingbird Festival 2014 at Woodlands Nature Station (August 2-3)

July 10, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hummingbird Festival Woodlands Nature Station 2014
Although this festival has expired, there is always something to see and do in the Woodlands Nature Station, as well as in the Land Between the Lakes. Visit our Kentucky Events  page for up to the minute happenings and be sure to check out our Things to Do in Kentucky  page.

I can actually remember the very first hummingbird I ever saw. My dad (where I got both my insane love of birds AND coffee from) pointed out a tiny little ball of motion that was hovering near one of his rose beds. When he asked if I knew what it was, I said it looked like the world’s largest dragonfly moving really, really, really fast. When he said it was a “hummingbird,” I thought he was pulling my leg – since it happened to be his favorite sport, it was never out of the question.

My mom backed up his story and a lifelong infatuation with these tiny beauties was born.

If you have an ongoing fascination with hummingbirds, you’ll want to be in the Land Between the Lakes in early August. The Hummingbird Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday (August 2-3, 2014) from 10am to 4pm.

From Woodlands Nature Station and LBL.org:

On-Going Activities:

  • Observe and learn as scientists band hummingbirds for migratory research.
  • Visit with local artists as they demonstrate their craft; buy some art to take home with you.
  • Talk with a local beekeeper as you check out our honeybee observation hive; purchase local bee products.
  • Find out how to attract bluebirds and other wildlife into your backyard; buy some native plants at our sale.
  • Visit the Hummingbird Gift Store to purchase feeders and more.
  • Discover our resident wildlife such as a bald eagle, bobcat, owls, snakes, and our new, red wolf pup.
  • Bring the kids for crafts, games, face painting, and scavenger hunt.

If you like Ruby-Throated hummingbirds, this is the weekend for you! Delight in watching more of these flying gems in one place than you can count! This year, discover “The Art of Hummingbirds,” featuring the artwork of local nature artists, inspired by the tiny hummingbirds and their outdoor neighbors. View a gallery of wildlife art, get tips from the experts, and even try your hand at wildlife photography and illustration. As always, you can also view our ongoing hummingbird banding demonstrations by licensed banders, as well as participate in a variety of programs and activities going on throughout the weekend. Bring the whole family, there will be plenty for kids to do too! Be sure to check back for further updates about the weekend’s schedule of programs and activities.$6 for adults; $4 for kids ages 5-12; Free for ages 4 and under. Event will take place rain or shine.

Picture of the Day: One of Woodands Nature Station’s Most Adorable Residents

July 19, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Woodlands Nature Station Groundhog

It’s no secret, there are few places this bird and animal lover had rather be than at Woodlands Nature Station in the beautiful Land Between the Lakes. Eagles, owls, wolves, pigs, deer, groundhogs, hummingbirds… come on, this place is paradise.

The only problem is, my husband has a hard time keeping my feet moving. My camera and I park right in front of the object of our affection at that moment and refuse to budge.  I’m always like, “What if he/she does something cute and I miss it?!“

I certainly didn’t miss the adorable groundhog above as he or she enjoyed a big juicy apple. The chubby little cutie reminded me of a toddler with an ice cream cone. Too cute for words.  While enjoying its treat, you’ll notice that it kept one eye on the smiling, baby-talking, giggling nut job behind a camera.

For more pictures of Land Between the Lakes, including the Woodlands Nature Station, check out the photo album.  Better yet, visit this amazing haven for animals and support their work in every conceivable way. The gift shop is awesome – sometimes it’s the only way my husband can lure me away from the animals.
