Wasabi Express in Owensboro

Beautiful Decor, Excellent Food, What More Could You Ask For?

Wasabi Express House Soup

Wasabi Express in Owensboro has a House Soup that’s flat out addictive.

Unless you’ve been to Wasabi Express in Owensboro, you have no idea how difficult this review is to write. You see, just the thought of their sushi, salad, and house soup are making me drool all over my keyboard.  Seriously, this is some of the best food you’ll find anywhere.

I’ve always loved Ninki’s Japanese Restaurant, as well as the gorgeous Fuji of Japan restaurant in Owensboro (Seriously, I haven’t written a review of Fuji yet? What’s wrong with me?!).  I actually had never had Japanese food until about 6 years ago – but I’ve been making up for lost time! Sushi is the food of the gods and I don’t mind telling you that you’ll never have better sushi than you’ll enjoy at Wasabi Exress.

Wasabi Express is sort of like Ninki’s Japanese Restaurant meets Fazoli’s. The food is just as delicious as Ninki’s (some would say more so lately), yet the service is extremely fast – like you’d expect in a fast food restaurant. The decor is absolutely gorgeous – you HAVE to check out the restrooms, whether you need to or not. They’re spectacular.  Wasabi Express speaks to all of your senses. You have the ridiculously delicious food, beautiful surroundings, and (several times) they’ve had the most relaxing and beautiful Japanese music playing.

Wasabi Express SaladWasabi Express Salad – Extraordinary!

The sushi roll I get each and every time is the Kentucky Roll.  I swear, it’s just the best thing ever.  I also always get the House Soup (shown above). The fried rice is as delicious as any rice has a right to be – especially if you enjoy it alongside the Heavenly Yum Yum sauce. So good!

For an appetizer, I love to order Edamame, but we’ve been experimenting with a few other appetizers, and they’re always out of this world.  Even Wasabi Express’ salad is divine.. the secret’s in the amazing dressing.

Wasabi Express Sushi: White Boy RollWasabi Express in Owensboro’s White Boy Sushi  Roll

My oldest daughter and husband always get the White Boy Sushi Roll. I have to admit, it’s amazing, but you just can’t get me away from my beloved Kentucky Roll, so don’t even try.

As far as beauty and cleanliness goes, I give Wasabi Express a perfect 10.  Taste and quality of food is also a 10. As far as friendly servers… well, it all depends on who you get!  Some are friendlier than others, but here’s something we’ve noticed – the male servers are always uncommonly friendly and happy!

Wasabi Express is the perfect place to eat in Owensboro, whether it’s for lunch or dinner.

This is Japanese food at its absolute best. You HAVE to go to Wasabi Express as soon as possible. I know you’ll become just as hooked as I am.

Wasabi Express Sushi Kentucky Roll

I order the Kentucky Roll Sushi every single time, without fail. It’s THAT awesome.

Wasabi Express is at 636 Southtown Boulevard. It’s between Kentucky Fried Chicken and the old Real Hacienda Restaurant.

Zaxby’s in Owensboro: A Great Spot for Lunch

Boneless Wings, Fries, Fried Mushrooms... Jackpot!

Zaxby's Fried Mushrooms

Zaxby’s Fried Mushrooms – and HEAVENLY sauce that accompanies them – are somewhat of an addiction.

I was so excited when it was announced that a Zaxby’s was coming to Owensboro. I drove by each day checking up on the progress.  When the grand opening was announced, I treated it like an approaching holiday.  I love the boneless chicken wings, but I can’t make up my mind which sauce I like best. Truth be told, I’m always convinced that the one I’m eating at the moment is the best.  I also love Zaxby’s fries – they’re always perfect.

My favorite thing about Zaxby’s, though, would have to be their ridiculously delicious fried mushrooms. They’re so amazing I enter an all new happy place whenever I’m enjoying an order. While they’re fantastic, even without their companion sauce, WITH the sauce they’re simply magical. Seriously, these fried mushrooms are one of the best sides any restaurant in town (or out of town) has.

Something else I always love about Zaxby’s is the friendly workers.  A few weeks ago, I met my youngest daughter (Stephany), her fiance (Rusty), and my oldest daughter (Emily) at Zaxby’s for lunch.  The parking lot was packed, I actually pulled into the last parking spot.  When the rest of the kids got there, they were somehow lucky enough to snag spots, too, but I have no idea how.  Needless to say, the restaurant was packed – and very busy. In the back of my mind I wondered how flustered the poor guy working the register must be – I was certain his nerves had to be shot out!

When I got up to the counter, though, he was smiling and as happy as he’d be if it were closing time! He even took the time to talk about a new item on the menu – as though I were the only person in the restaurant.

I love that!

Friendly people, great food, fast service – is it any wonder this is one of my favorite places for lunch?

The only criticism I could ever make about our beloved little Zaxby’s is the fact that it is… well, our beloved little Zaxby’s.  They actually moved into an abandoned Dairy Queen, which was kind of small – with a parking lot that’s also unbelievably small. I’d have LOVED to see Zaxby’s move into a bigger place.  Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll open up a second Zaxby’s… like, say close to our house??!

If you’re ever looking for a great place for a quick and delicious lunch in Owensboro, Zaxby’s is an awesome choice.  Then head across the road for dessert at Owensboro’s Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt. It’s the only way to roll.

Zaxby’s is at 5030 Frederica, in front of the mall.  Whatever you do, order the fried mushrooms!

Why Your Next Meal Should be at Bob Evans in Owensboro, Kentucky

A Kentucky Restaurant Review That'll Probably Make Your Mouth Water

Bob Evans Owensboro Grilled Chicken Mashed Potatoes and Chicken Gravy

If all grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and chicken gravy tasted like they do at Bob Evans, I’d never eat anything else.

We have quite a few great restaurants here in Owensboro, Kentucky – something that makes doing my Kentucky restaurant reviews a joy!  You always have to pull for the home team, right? For a long time I’ve thought that one of the most underrated restaurants in our town is also one of its best.  Bob Evans, on 54, is consistently delicious, consistently friendly, and consistently clean.. charming, even. It’s mind boggling to me that it isn’t packed at all times of the day.

I’ll let you in on a little secret – and possibly the reason more people don’t flock to Owensboro’s Bob Evans madly. When the restaurant first opened several years ago, it was… how shall we put this… horrific.  Was that blunt enough? Seriously, it took forever to get your food, then when you did get it, you couldn’t give it back fast enough.  I had a fries incident that I still can’t talk about.   However, it would appear that someone higher up the food chain (literally) got wind of the crimes against human decency that were going on and whipped everyone into shape.

By the way the restaurant is now, I’m thinking we should put these people in charge of the country. They GET THINGS DONE!!!  I only bring up Bob Evans in Owensboro’s unsavory past in case anyone had bad taste in their mouth, so to speak, from an early experience. Times have changed and you won’t believe the difference.

Fast forward to the present.  The servers and host/hostess are always very, very friendly and helpful, the food is exceptional (delicious, with a homemade taste), and you don’t have to wait long at all for your food.

Bob Evans, Owensboro, Strawberry and Hot Fudge Sundaes

I remember the first time I tried Bob Evans after my first negative trip (I gave them a year to figure things out).  My food was brought to me so fast, I looked around to make sure I hadn’t gotten someone else’s.  Then, after one bite, I realized that even if I had (which I hadn’t) – they weren’t getting it back!  On that particular trip, I got bacon, which is frankly the best in town.  Breakfast at Bob Evans is always a delicious and wonderful way to start the day.

A few nights ago, my husband Michael and I had dinner at Bob Evans. Great move.  I had grilled chicken, mashed potatoes with chicken gravy, salad, and a hot fudge sundae for dessert.  Well played, me, well played.

  • The grilled chicken was extraordinary.  Grilled chicken is a personal favorite of mine, so I get it often. I’ve never, ever had grilled chicken in a restaurant any better than this. In fact, I’m not certain I’ve ever had any as good.  The grilled chicken comes with special sauces, but you’d be crazy to put anything on this chicken except for your teeth.  I chose one of the sauces – but I wasn’t sure if it’d be good or not (I’d never heard of it), so my server put it in a little dish to the side. THANK GOD! The sauce wasn’t good, so I never let it anywhere near my heavenly grilled chicken.  When you order grilled chicken at Bob Evans – and you should do it as soon as possible – do not get a sauce. No, no, no, a thousand times no. This chicken is so tender, juicy, and grilled tasting that it doesn’t need anything.
  • The mashed potatoes were the bomb, but the chicken gravy was an absolute masterpiece.  I can’t even begin to describe how delicious their chicken gravy is.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
  • We were served a big beautiful salad in a bowl a la Olive Garden. It was perfect and the French Dressing was very, very good.
  • The warm dinner rolls served at Bob Evans are some of the best rolls you can get out. They’re scrumptious.
  • The hot fudge sundae was as good as the picture makes it look. Michael got the strawberry sundae and it was also spectacular. Of course I snuck a bite.
  • They serve Heinz Ketchup. Yay!!! You know what that means to me. When I see off brand or cheap-o ketchup in a restaurant, I die a little inside. But when I see a bottle of Heinz on my table, I smile. Then promptly take a picture of it.  People probably think I’m nuts, but that’s okay. Let’s not even pretend it’d be the first time.
  • Michael’s beef gravy and steak were also outstanding. Yes, another bite stolen. Maybe two.  Bob Evans really, really, really knows how to make exceptional gravy. Man oh man is it delicious. You’ll see how wonderful it looks when you click through the slideshow below.
  • The macaroni and cheese was creamy and outstandingly good.

The Best Pizza in Owensboro is….. Harkley’s 3

Harkley's 3 Pizzeria & Sports Bar's Drool Inducing Pizza

Harkley's 3 Pizzeria & Sports Bar Owensboro, Kentucky

The best pizza sauce…

The best pizza crust…

The best pizza…. period.

About ten years ago, my husband Michael announced that he was taking me and our three girls out for pizza. We lived in the Louisville area at the time, so the girls and I were PSYCHED about the crazy cool place he was mysteriously driving us to. As we passed more and more “main” streets and busy sections of the town, I was convinced the lone male in the car had lost what was left of his mind (living with 4 females has to take it’s toll). Long story short – he finally landed in the tiny parking lot of a place that looked like it had been out of business since the 50′s. Maybe 40′s. I’ll never forget the way that crazy little pizza dive looked outside and inside and I’ll never, ever forget that it was the best pizza I had during our entire Louisville tenure.

I learned then that you can’t judge a restaurant with your eyes alone.  After all, those of us who are pizza fanatics don’t order pizza to look at it. We have every intention of devouring it hard and fast – leaving nothing but a few crumbs and a memory.

A few nights ago, Michael and I decided that we absolutely HAD to have pizza for supper. You know how it is, when the pizza craving hits, your taste buds will consider nothing else.  We pointed the car in the direction of Harkley’s 3 Pizzeria & Sport’s Bar and have agreed that there’s little reason to ever head off in any other direction for pizza.  He and a few friends had eaten lunch at Harkley’s 3 earlier that same day and said that they had the “best stromboli” in town.  Coming from King of the Stromboli, this is high praise indeed.

I could tell that the king couldn’t wait to see what Harkley’s 3 could do with pizza.  Our anticipation had reached a dangerously high level when our server brought the beauty you see pictured here to our table.

I could have kissed her.

Taking time to plant a kiss on the server would have meant time away from the pizza, so I kept my seat and didn’t shock either the server or my husband.

On Genuine Kentucky, I write Kentucky restaurant reviews regularly.  I also write about food and recipes daily on my food blog.  So the fact that I’m at a loss for words when it comes to Harkley’s 3 is a HUGE testament to their amazing pizza.  If pizza making were an Olympic event, Harkley’s 3 wouldn’t just take gold – the others would bow out gracefully and walk home with their heads down and hopes crushed.

Yes, as a matter of fact, the pizza is that dang good.

My partner in crime and I tried to figure out what made the pizza so exceptional.  Was it the freshness of the toppings? The perfect amount of quality cheese (ever notice that you can taste quality when it comes to cheese)?  Was it the outrageously tasty crust? Was it the extraordinary sauce?

If I had to call out one ingredient as the “secret weapon,” I’d personally go with the insanely  flavorful  sauce – but my husband seemed to think the crust was the difference maker.  I have to admit, the crust was perfect…. but the sauce!

In the end, we decided that it was a combination of both as well as the toppings, and cheese.  You simply can’t combine the best sauce and the best crust and not get a pizza that’s worth writing home about… or, in this case, writing at home about.

A few other things I loved muchly about Harkley’s 3:

  • The UK gumball machine that greets you at the front door. GO CATS!
  • All of the sports memorabilia on the walls – very fun to gawk at.
  • They have Coke products instead of Pepsi products, which means Diet Coke instead of swamp juice (my pet name for Diet Pepsi).
  • Big. Screen. TVs.  There’s magic in those words! Sports fans won’t miss a thing at Harkley’s 3.
  • Harkley’s 3 Pizzeria is very family-oriented. There are video games and wii for kids.  The bar is separate from the restaurant, so it’s all good.  On the night we were there, a family came in with 3 or 4 young boys (I didn’t look up from my pizza long enough to count heads). The kids had the time of their life.

It’s just a very fun, upbeat atmosphere. They even have karaoke on weekends!  If you want a fun evening which happens to include pizza that’s STUPID delicious, you’ll want to go to Harkley’s 3.  Whether you’re looking for lunch in Owensboro or the best pizza in town, you now know where to go: 3955 East 4th Street, Owensboro.

**** Harkley’s 3 also delivers! Call 1 270.240.5237 and wait by the door for the best pizza you’ve had in a very, very long time.  Don’t tell my husband, but the secret’s in the sauce….

The Farmhouse in Calhoun, Kentucky

Best Catfish for Miles and Miles and Miles...

  •
  •
My husband and I were anxious to eat at The Farmhouse in Calhoun, Kentucky.  Knowing they served catfish, it was just a matter of time before I showed up on their doorstep, bib on and fork in hand. I swear, I’m such a catfish fanatic, my motto should be, “A day without catfish is just barely worth getting out of bed for.”

When we first walked in, I fell in love with the place. I’m WAY into vintage Hollywood and classics, so the decor floated my boat in a happy direction. I quickly became obsessed with the huge stone fireplace in the center of the restaurant with a big, beautiful cross on the side.  So pretty.

While a restaurant review is, obviously, mainly centered around the food, I always, always, always take note of the surroundings and the servers.  In this case, the surroundings were spotless and exceptionally charming and the servers were as friendly and warm as you could hope for.  The ladies treated us though they’d known us all their lives and, about 5 minutes in, I felt as though we had. In this fast-paced society, do I even have to tell you how uncommon this is?

Michael and I both ordered catfish but we mixed up the sides a little, so we could sample as many things as possible.  He ordered potato salad and coleslaw in addition to beans and I went with onion rings (another obsession of mine) and macaroni and cheese.

  • The coleslaw was one of the two best sides, in my opinion. It had a wonderful flavor, with a hint of sweetness. It wasn’t like most coleslaw – it was way better. If I’d known it was that good, I’d have ordered, like, 12 sides of it.
  • The potato salad tied with the coleslaw for first place in the “sides” category. It was DANG good. In fact, I’d love a plate of it right now.
  • The beans were really, really good – not too soupy, which can be a problem in some restaurants.
  • The onion rings were outstanding.
  • The macaroni and cheese was my least favorite. We just didn’t see eye-to-eye on how mac and cheese should taste. Admittedly, I am extremely Mac ‘n Cheese picky.  Generally speaking, the less orange Macaroni and Cheese is, the more I like it.  Not a biggie, though, everything else was so outstanding, I barely noticed! You may love their Mac ‘n Cheese to distraction. Remember, when it comes to the subject, I’m “Picky Pants.”

The star of the show was the catfish and it was exceptional.  Honestly, I’d be hard-pressed to say when I’ve had catfish any tastier.  The flavor was a knock out and the serving size was generous.  I was also wild about the hush puppies. These little guys were highly original and stood out from most hush puppies I’ve ever had.  Like the catfish, coleslaw, potato salad, and servers, the pups left a wonderful impression.

Some of the menu items include:

  • Cheese Sticks (appetizer)
  • Buffalo Chicken Tenders
  • Chicken Tenders
  • Fried Mushrooms
  • Fried Biscuits & Honey
  • Butterfly Shrimp
  • Baked Potato
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Coleslaw
  • Green Beans
  • Hush puppies
  • Tater Tots
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Fries
  • White Beans
  • Hamburger
  • Cheeseburger
  • Frog Legs
  • Club Sandwich
  • BLT Sandwich
  • BBQ Pork Sandwich
  • Salad
  • Homemade Pies

The Kids Menu Includes:

  • Hamburger
  • Hot Dog
  • Chicken Tenders
  • Mac ‘N Cheese
  • Piece Catfish

For dessert, you’ll be blown away by the homemade pies.  I’m a card-carrying chocoholic, so I went with the chocolate pie while my husband ordered the Coconut Cream Pie.  They were both mouthwateringly delicious.  (If mouthwateringly isn’t a word, it should be.)

Not only do I highly recommend eating dinner at The Farmhouse, I’m certain it’d be the perfect place to enjoy a quiet and delicious lunch.

The Farmhouse is located at 220 Main Street (Highway 81) and is open Thursday through Sunday 10:30 am – 8:00 pm. Call (270-273-3845) for any questions. If you love coleslaw, hush puppies, potato salad, beans, onion rings, and catfish so good you make one of those goofy “Ooooh, this is sooooo gooood” faces, trust me, you’ll want to visit The Farmhouse in Calhoun right away, if not sooner.

It’s Always the Right Time for Cracker Barrel in Owensboro Kentucky

For Breakfast, Lunch, or Supper!

Cracker Barrel in Owensboro KentuckyCracker Barrel Breakfast: Perfect any time of the day or night.

It occurred to me a few days ago that I’ve never actually done a restaurant review for one of my favorite places to eat in Owensboro – or any town for that matter: Cracker Barrel!  I have no idea why but I’ve eaten at Cracker Barrels (especially the one in my hometown of Owensboro) about a gazillion and six times since I began doing Kentucky restaurant reviews.

And never once wrote one for Cracker Barrel.

That’s messed up! But I”m going to right that wrong here and now. Cracker Barrel isn’t just a restaurant in the south, it’s a Southern institution, and one that we’re incredibly proud of.  The menu is diverse – more so than the majority of restaurants.  Think about it, not only can you order amazing breakfasts any time of the day or night, you can have your choice of a great variety of meats and vegetables.

  • catfish
  • meatloaf
  • steak
  • country fried chicken
  • shrimp
  • ham
  • chicken and dumplings
  • grilled chicken strips
  • green beans
  • mashed potatoes
  • gravy
  • potato casserole
  • beef stew
  • carrots
  • coleslaw
  • salad
  • fried okra
  • corn
  • cornbread
  • biscuits

The list goes on, but quite frankly, I’m getting hungry.  On a recent trip to Cracker Barrel, my husband ordered a big beautiful breakfast (shown above).  Our oldest daughter Emily and him order from the breakfast menu most of the time. Who can blame them, you get A LOT of food for a great price, and the food is always exceptionally delicious.  My favorites are the fried catfish, spicy grilled catfish (Heavenly!), shrimp, meatloaf, and chicken and dumplings.  Every now and then I HAVE to have a plate of pancakes with berries and whipped topping though.

Great, I’m making myself hungry again.

I recently ordered a breakfast meal and chose fried catfish as my meat. Don’t I almost always? It was delicious.  The picture is below, but be warned, it isn’t too pretty. This catfish fiend cut into the delicious catfish before taking the picture.  But look how clever I was, positioning the lemon wedge at the place of impact.  Oh, yeah, that hid it. Gluttony isn’t a pretty thing, but it is almost always satisfying. Just look at that fried egg and hash brown casserole. Mmmmmm....

Fried Catfish at Cracker Barrel in OwensboroCracker Barrel’s Fried Catfish, Fried Egg, and Hash-brown Casserole

Obviously, Cracker Barrel is an outstanding place to have breakfast or supper, but have you ever thought about Cracker Barrel for lunch? The prices are hard to beat and the food is as good as you’ll find anywhere.  The fried catfish sandwich is wonderful and I highly recommend the Meatloaf Sandwich, the Grilled Chicken Salad and BLT Salad.

To make a long story short, there isn’t a bad food item on the entire menu.  The next time you’re trying to decide where to eat breakfast, lunch, or supper, head to Cracker Barrel and remind yourself what a great restaurant experience should be like.  I applaud (loudly applaud) the fact that, even in this irritable economy, Cracker Barrel’s prices remain VERY fair. You get more than you pay for at Cracker Barrel, and that can’t be said of a lot of restaurants.

It’s been my experience that the servers and workers at Cracker Barrels are uncommonly friendly. I think it’s a requirement or something:)

See Cracker Barrel’s website for the menu and to find a restaurant/store near you.

O’Charley’s in Owensboro, Kentucky: Consistently Great Food

Chicken Italia O'Charley's

My husband and I wanted a great restaurant to share our Valentine’s Day meal, so we went with one of our favorites, O’Charley’s on Frederica, here in Owensboro. Most restaurants (given the fact that they’re operated by humans) will have “off nights.”  Maybe they’ll overcook the fries or leave the plate under the hot lights so long your rice nearly returns to its pre-cooked form. We recently had both of these scenarios at a couple of different restaurants in Owensboro.   Funny, you can go to a restaurant a gazillion times but the one you remember is your last visit.

Restaurant managers would do well to keep this in mind.  Don’t drop the ball! You might not get another shot.

O’Charley’s, thankfully, almost always gets it right.   I, personally, have never eaten anything at O’Charley’s that wasn’t excellent.

The bread is always fresh, soft, and delicious (and served with real butter, always a hit with me).  O’Charley’s rolls are, actually, some of the best you can get out. They sort of just melt in your mouth. Do I even have to tell you how wild I am about that???  Their salads are also fantastic.  I’m pretty picky when it comes to tossed salads and even picker about dressings.  O’Charley’s hits the ball out of the park with their salads and the French dressing is fantastic.   It costs a tiny bit extra, buy you’ll want to order bacon on your salad.  When the bacon hits their great French dressing, magic ensues.

Their steaks are always perfectly delicious and deliciously perfect and their Bruschetta Chicken is the stuff dreams are made of.  Each bite makes your eyes roll into the back of your head.  THAT good.

Their Teriyaki Sesame Tilapia and Cowboy Sirloin are also as good as it gets.

Michael, who is nuttier than a giant Payday candy bar,  had been talking for weeks about a new dish on the O’Charley’s menu: New York Pizza Pasta.  The boy talked about it with such love in his eyes and hunger in his voice that I knew for certain what he’d order.

Then he didn’t.

We both saw another new dish on the menu at the same time: Chicken Italia (Grilled chicken breast topped with mozzarella, tomatoes, asparagus, and lemon butter served on top of linguini with Parmesan Cheese and garlic butter ).  It had me hook, line, and sinker when I saw the words butter, garlic, linguini, and grilled chicken strung together.  When I read the description, I knew that my husband would have a dilemma on his hand.  Sure, he’d been craving the New York Pizza Pasta  for weeks – but Chicken Italia had a secret weapon: Asparagus.  He is almost as obsessed with asparagus as I am catfish.  If it’s ever on a menu, it’ll find it’s way to his plate.  Every time.

I gave the very friendly server (who’s face strongly resembled Taylor Swift’s beautiful face) my order:

  • Salad with French Dressing, with bacon
  • Chicken Italia
  • Ooey Goey Caramel Dessert

When our server turned to my husband, he said, “The exact same thing she ordered.”  Dilemma solved.  Advantage asparagus.

When she asked if we wanted mushrooms added, we of course said we did.  I’m never one to turn down mushrooms.  Like bacon on salads, there’s an extra fee for mushrooms, so if you have mushrooms added to your meal, know that there’s a price on those ‘shrooms.

O'Charley's Miniature Ooey Goey Caramel PieAfter we enjoyed the heck out of our bread, iced tea, and salads, our server brought the main dishes.  Everything at O’Charley’s is plated so beautifully that it’s fun to feast with your eyes before the mouth gets involved.  I’m happy to say that it was even more delicious than it was beautiful.  The grilled chicken, all by itself, would have been a colossal experience.  It was simply outstanding.   The pasta, mushrooms, and asparagus were also Heavenly.

Every delectable bite had so much wonderful flavor that I never wanted our meal to end.  However, there was a sweet little reward when it did end.  We each ordered a little Ooey Goey Caramel Pie for dessert and, take it from me, this is one of the best desserts in town.  It defied description. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Michael even told the friendly manager that it’s his favorite thing he’s ever had at O’Charley’s. I have to tell you, this manager was so friendly. He even took my husband’s empty (very, very empty) plate and fork for him.  Very cool. Very friendly.

As we were leaving, a hostess held the door open for us and told us to have a great night. That’s the kind of friendly atmosphere I LOVE in a restaurant. Applebee’s used to do the same thing.  The past few times, they haven’t, so I was really glad to see O’Charley’s keeping with the warm and friendly tradition.

Whether it’s lunch or dinner, you can’t possibly go wrong with O’Charley’s in Owensboro.  Along with Owensboro’s Olive Garden, O’Charley’s is the very definition of consistently fantastic.

As a Matter of Fact, Yes, Another Olive Garden Post: A Sweet One, at That

Olive Garden Dolcini or Little Dessert Treats

Olive Garden Chocolate DessertLet it be written, let it be said: I could eat at Olive Garden daily until the day that I’m dead. Especially when the Olive Garden in question is as stellar as our Olive Garden in Owensboro.  On a recent Friday excursion, my husband, our oldest daughter (Emily) and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch at the Owensboro Olive Garden.  My husband and I both had the Chicken & Gnocchi soup.  This is, hands down, one of the best soups in the world.  The Chicken & Gnocchi is a creamy soup made with roasted chicken, traditional Italian dumplings and spinach. The Italian dumplings are the stuff culinary dreams are made of.  Emily ordered her favorite, the Zuppa Toscana ( Spicy sausage, russet potatoes and cavolo greens in a creamy broth).

The Soup, Salad, and Breadsticks lunch is just $6.95.   You get their delicious garden-fresh salad, choice of homemade soup (you HAVE to try the Chicken & Gnocchi) and Heavenly warm garlic breadsticks.  The $6.95 special price is only until 4 p.m.

We ordered a dessert on this trip and haven’t quite gotten over it yet.  It was the Dolcini: Three beautiful and delicious little desserts served on a platter (pictured at the top).  The unforgettable Lemon Dessert Olive Gardentrio consisted of: Chocolate Mousse with Dark Chocolate Cookie Crust • Strawberry & White Chocolate Cream Cake • Limoncello Mousse with Vanilla Cookie Crust

The chocoholic that I am, I immediately dove into the chocolate dessert.  Then the Strawberry one… then the Lemon one. The Linoncello Mousse with Vanilla Cookie Crust – or, as this Kentucky gal refers to it, the lemon one, had a scrumptious little candied lemon on top.

Each time I eat at Olive Garden, and if you’re a regular reader, you know it’s weekly, I’m struck by the friendliness of the staff and the deliciousness of the food.  We also marvel at how fast they are – at lunch, anyway.  Most of us want our lunch to be fast but filling and inexpensive but memorable.  If we can have a gorgeous, relaxed setting and friendly people, we consider it a wonderful bonus.  If anyplace delivers all of this any better than Owensboro’s Olive Garden, I’ve yet to find it.

Pictured below is another Olive Garden obsession of mine: The Raspberry Peach Tea. SO GOOD!

When writing Kentucky Restaurant Reviews, I try, very hard, to accentuate the positive, while spending as little time with the negative as possible.  However, in fairness to my readers, the negative can’t be glossed over or ignored. However, when a “negative” is addressed by a restaurant, I always go back and edit the original post. It’s my pleasure to do so!  A few of my pet peeves when it comes to restaurants are:

  1. Crummy sides. I hate for a restaurant to rest on the laurels of their meat and/or main dishes. If it’s on your menu, it should be able to stand on it’s own, as if it were the ONLY thing on the menu.
  2. Unfriendly servers. If you read a restaurant review on Genuine Kentucky and the server is not mentioned, rest assured that they either weren’t very friendly or weren’t exactly on the ball. Or both!
  3. Unfriendly hosts and hostesses.  Hello?!  You’re paid to be friendly. Your job exists to welcome visitors and make them feel like you’re glad to see them.
  4. Off brand condiments.  I LOVE to see a restaurant owner who cares enough about his/her guests to serve them Heinz or Hunt’s, Red Gold at the very least.  Off brand Ketchup is gross.  It screams “Someone’s cutting corners!!!”
  5. Overcooked fries.  Come on, take them out before they’re brown.  Brown fries aren’t cool.
  6. Watery soft drinks. Servers should be taught that if you see the beverage come out of the machine and there is NO fizzle, DO NOT serve it to the guests. Blech.
  7. Servers who “Push the Wrong Button.”Servers charging the wrong price for menu items is becoming an alarming trend. A server can get annoyed with a customer and, bam, “accidentally” hit the wrong button.  A word to anyone who eats out: Examine your ticket. For example, if the restaurant offers 1/2 off Sushi, make certain your server doesn’t charge you the full price.
  8. I am, by nature, a very friendly guest when I visit restaurants.  I always, always leave tips.  When the service is good, I don’t just tip, I over tip! My oldest daughter is the same way. One sweetheart of a server in Olive Garden once got a $10 tip from us for lunch.  She made us smile, so we wanted to make her smile. It’s really as simple as that.
  9. Real butter is always better than Margarine.
  10. Options, Please.  As someone with a vegetarian daughter, I love for restaurants to offer completely meatless dishes.  Bonus points for the restaurants, like Denny’s, with Boca Burgers on their menu.

One final thought: If an owner really wants their restaurant to be the best it can possibly be, he or she should have comment cards on the tables. Guests will tell them what they’re doing right but, more importantly, they’ll tell them where they’re messing up.  A closed, secure box should be provided for guests to put the cards in. Get the opinions from the people who’s opinions matter most.

Olive Garden in Owensboro Kentucky: The Perfect Lunch

If you’re in Owensboro, Kentucky at lunchtime, I have two words for you: Olive Garden. As I’ve mentioned on the Kentucky blog many times, my oldest daughter Emily and I eat lunch out each and every Friday.  Sometimes my husband/her dad is able to get off work long enough to join us and sometimes her sisters make it.  However, the one constant is this: Em and I do not miss Friday lunch out…. or our trip to Target and Starbucks afterward.

We kind of have a system we’ve developed over the years.  We’ll have lunch at Olive Garden one week, then branch out to a new restaurant the next Friday. Then we’ll return to Olive Garden the next… etc. If it weren’t for loving variety AND wanting to do a lot of Where to Eat in Owensboro Kentucky reviews, I can’t promise that we wouldn’t just head to Olive Garden each and every Friday.

I have to tell you, Owensboro’s Olive Garden may well be the best Olive Garden in the country.  I certainly haven’t eaten at all of their locations, so I can’t say with all certainty that they’re the best, however, our Olive Garden is flawlessly beautiful and beautifully flawless… so imagining another one beating them is pretty unreasonable.

How do you beat flawless?

So what do I love so much about Olive Garden at lunchtime?  To put it simply: They hit all the marks.

Below are the things I want and expect from a restaurant at lunchtime:

  • Cleanliness
  • Friendly host or hostess who seem genuinely glad to see you
  • Friendly and helpful servers who seem genuinely glad to have you at their table
  • UN FLAT diet coke, cokes, etc.
  • Great tea
  • Wonderful bread
  • Wonderful salad
  • Plenty of choices
  • Healthy choices
  • Reasonable prices – you get what (or more than what) you paid for
  • Speed – who wants to spend precious time waiting?

Owensboro’s Olive Garden is all over each of these – as I said, They hit all the marks. The lunch menu is delicious, healthy, and unbelievably filling.  When we have lunch at Olive Garden, we’re always completely full until supper.  Their Soup, Salad, and Bread sticks lunch special is “all you can eat,” and so ridiculously delicious you will, indeed, eat all you can…. and then some.  Each of the soups are outstanding, but I’m so addicted to the Chicken and Gnocchi that I get it each time. You have no idea how much I’d love a bowl right now as I’m typing these words!

In addition to the best soups imaginable, delicious bread sticks, and my favorite salad in town, Olive Garden also has ridiculously beautiful and delicious appetizers (Could I interest you in Smoked Mozzarella Fonduta maybe???), pastas, flat breads, paninis (grilled sandwiches) and more.  There’s a Grilled Steak and Porotbello Panini with my name all over it. The paninis are served with your choice from their exceptional soups and Heavenly salad.

We have many wonderful places to eat lunch here in Owensboro, but Olive Garden sets the bar.  I have never had a hostess or host that wasn’t genuinely warm and friendly and I’ve never had a server who was less than a 10.  Not even a 9 -1/2!  They ooze class and friendliness and represent the restaurant the way a restaurant would want to be represented.

The food is always impeccable, flawless in every conceivable way.

As you know, I take my Kentucky Restaurant Reviews and restaurant recommendations SERIOUSLY.  I would hate (with every fiber in my being) to steer someone in a direction that could prove to be a bad experience for them.  That’s what I love so much about places like Olive Garden – I know, beyond a shadow of doubt, that they’ll never let me or my beloved readers down.  When it comes to restaurants, they don’t just set the bar, they set it high.

Tumbleweed in Owensboro: For a Friendly, Delicious, Beautiful, and Fast Lunch!

Tumbleweed Owensboro Kentucky

I’m launching a new series of posts today dedicated to one subject: Where to Eat Lunch in Owensboro, Kentucky. Not only do my family and I enjoy a great lunch out, I hear from A LOT of people around Kentucky who always want to know where to eat in Owensboro.   Many people apparently make many trips to our great city during the day and are always on the lookout for a delicious lunch in a friendly setting.  As a proud Owensboro resident, I’m always very careful where I send people.  After all, if they’re cool enough to read my articles and if they trust me enough to ask for my opinion, I take my recommendations SERIOUSLY!!!

I have done many Owensboro restaurant reviews on Genuine Kentucky over the years, but I like to keep my reviews as current as possible.  The hard cold truth is that sometimes restaurants change… and sometimes that change isn’t necessarily for the better.  If you see a restaurant (Owensboro’s Olive Garden, Tumbleweed, Red Lobster, and Old Hickory would be good examples) mentioned many times, rest assured that they’re on top of their game and not falling off in the least!

The Where to Eat Lunch in Owensboro, Kentucky will focus entirely on lunches and lunch menus.

My oldest daughter, Emily, and I had lunch today at Owensboro’s Tumbleweed.  Here’s the bizarre thing: She and I have eaten at Tumbleweed often for dinner but have never thought of it as a “lunch” restaurant.  Okay, we were completely wrong.  They very much have a lunch menu and it’s as delicious as their supper menu. It’s also exceptionally priced. Very, very reasonable.  Emily ate for less than $8 and my meal was just a little over $10 (I HAD to add some of their black beans to my meal or I’d have kept it under $10 – they were worth it!).  Even after we each tipped our adorable and sweet server Laura generously, we still ate for a lot less than a lot of places.

Their Tex Mex menu items are always so delicious that it takes me aback. Each time I eat at Tumbleweed it’s as though I forgot just how amazing it was the time before!  Their chips and salsa are wonderful, the black beans and refried beans are as good as those you get in authentic Mexican restaurants, and their rice?  Personally, I think their rice is better than the rice in authentic Mexican restaurants.

Tumbleweed’s rice is flavorful and never dry.  It’s outstanding.

I ordered the Bean Burrito and, as you can see from the picture, it was as big as my plate.  You’re given a choice of toppings for burritos (in fact I think you can have toppings on anything you order!), and I went with the sour cream.  Great choice, if I do say so myself.  It was so darn good.

I ordered peach tea and it was delicious. Tea’s a big deal for me. A restaurant always gets extra points from me if their tea’s great and Tumbleweed’s is. I also love that our server never let our drinks get empty. They never got anywhere close to empty. Our girl was on it!

Another thing I love about Tumbleweed, besides the great food, friendly staff, and beautiful setting, is the fact that they’re incredibly fast. JUST what you want a restaurant to be, especially at lunch.

Owensboro Tumbleweed is located at 5257 Frederica Street. It’s really close to Owensboro’s Ulta Beauty Store, so be sure to check it out after you eat!
