Kentucky Afield Outdoors: Three State Resort Parks for Great Fall Fishing

October 13, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kentucky Lake at Kenlake
The dramatically cooler nights of the last few weeks are a blessing for anglers. These longer, colder nights pull the residual heat from the water, signaling to game fish that it is time to fatten up on the fall harvest of baitfish born earlier in the year.

The picturesque panorama of the changing leaves rings many of our reservoirs in fall. The fishing sometimes takes a backseat to the pleasure of soaking in all of the exquisite scenery. A fall weekend of staying at a Kentucky State Resort Park and fishing in the most superb setting of the year is a great stress reducer before the hub bub of the holiday season arrives.

Here are three of the best Kentucky State Resort Parks for a fall weekend fishing getaway:

Kenlake State Resort Park, Kentucky Lake: Kentucky Lake – along with its twin to the east, Lake Barkley – rank among the nation’s best largemouth bass fisheries. The lakes check in as the fourth best bass fishing destination in the southeast by Bassmaster Magazine for 2016. Few places produce as many largemouth bass weiging 4 pound or more, as well as mind-boggling numbers of 2- to 3-pound largemouths. A 25-fish day here is just so-so.

Fall is one of the best times to book a weekend at Kenlake State Resort Park (http://parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/kenlake). This park’s location provides excellent access to great bass fishing spots on Kentucky Lake and the lake is often nearly empty in fall.

During fall, Kentucky Lake’s largemouth bass are making the transition from deep water summer haunts on main lake ledges and channel drops back into shallow water. The sloping banks in the bays on the Land Between the Lakes side of the lake directly across from Kenlake State Resort Park provide outstanding action. The changing leaves on this undeveloped side of Kentucky Lake provide spectacular scenery.

Kentucky Lake at Kenlake
Try bottom-crawling a 1/2-ounce football jig in the Okeechobee craw or Cumberland craw colors down these sloping banks in Barnett Bay, Vickers Bay or Rhodes Bay. A 7-inch straight-tailed green pumpkin worm rigged on a 1/4-ounce Shakey head fished the same also produces numbers of largemouth bass. You also may stumble across a brute smallmouth bass in these areas as well.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park, Lake Cumberland: Striped bass in Lake Cumberland are thriving. The fishery is returning to its former glory after the lake was lowered for several years to repair Wolf Creek Dam. Southeastern Fishery District Biologist John Williams reports the number of fish exceeding 30 inches is dramatically improving. Anglers are catching fish heavier than 25 pounds with much greater regularity. This fishery will continue to improve for the foreseeable future.

Fall is a fantastic season for Lake Cumberland striped bass fishing and the location of Lake Cumberland State Resort Park (http://parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/lake-cumberland/) places anglers in the perfect spot on the lake.

In October, stripers usually hang from 35 to 70 feet deep along main lake flats and points. These same areas in the lower ends of major creek arms such as Beaver, Indian and Wolf creeks also hold stripers. The lower lake region, from Lake Cumberland State Resort Park down to the dam, seems to produce slightly better fishing in fall.

Bottom fishing live alewives, shad or large shiners is one of the easiest and most productive ways to catch fall stripers on Lake Cumberland. The small coves on the south bank of the lake from the mouth of Beaver Creek to the mouth of Indian Creek make great places to bottom fish in fall. Most of these coves have bank areas comprised of broken shale mixed with mud. Smart anglers beach the nose of their boats on these soft banks and fish their live bait rigs off the back of the boat.

A slip-sinker rig comprised of a 1/2-ounce egg sinker, barrel swivel and leader of 17-pound abrasion resistant monofilament line with a 5/0 circle hook on the business end works wonders. If you don’t get a bite within 45 minutes, move to the next cove.

Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park, Dale Hollow Lake: Few other lakes in the country produce as many robust 3- to 6-pound smallmouth bass as Dale Hollow Lake. The 6,614 acres of the lake in Kentucky make good water for fall smallmouth bass fishing. Bonus: Dale Hollow is one of the most scenic lakes in the upper South.

Leitchfield’s David L. Hayes caught the 11-pound, 15-ounce all-tackle world record smallmouth bass not far from the boat ramp now named for him at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park (http://parks.ky.gov/parks/resortparks/dale-hollow/) on July 9, 1955. The weedbeds found in the coves adjacent to the ramp hold smallmouth bass in fall.

Drifting large crappie minnows or medium-sized shiners over these weedbeds produces the best numbers of smallmouth bass and fools the big ones. Use a size 1 Octopus style hook with a few slip shots gently crimped on the line 18 to 24 inches above it.

Weedbeds abound in Wolf River arm of the lake, as well as in Sulphur and Illwill creeks. Fishing the minnows or shiners on points in these areas also produces smallmouth bass, but the weedbeds seem to the more consistent producer of bigger fish.

Visit a Kentucky state resort park this fall and enjoy bountiful fishing during the best time of year.

Author Lee McClellan is a nationally award-winning associate editor for Kentucky Afield magazine, the official publication of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. He is a life-long hunter and angler, with a passion for smallmouth bass fishing.

I wholeheartedly everyone to visit Lake Cumberland State Resort Park as often as possible because it is uncommonly beautiful and the people are uncommonly friendly.

The park will host the 11th Annual Earth Day Geocache Weekend April 22-24, 2016.

Geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches.”

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park has prepared another challenging hunt for everyone, from the novice to the expert cacher.  Everyone can enjoy the beauty of Lake Cumberland State Resort Park while making sure we keep it clean by “Cache In Trash Out” and “Leave No Trace.”

The geocache weekend will begin on Friday, April 22, and continue through Sunday, April 24. The weekend starts Friday evening at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park with registration from 5:30 p.m. through 8 p.m. CDT. The staff will also go over event rules.

Caching will commence promptly at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday morning at Lake Cumberland and will end at noon Sunday. Participants will meet briefly each morning to disseminate coordinates and your cache packet. You may be able to download the coordinates to your GPS if you have a USB cord with you. Otherwise, you can manually download coordinates.

The registration fee for the weekend is $30 per couple (any two people) and $20 per individual; children 12 and under are $10. Preregistration is not required, but would be greatly appreciated.   A limited number of lodge rooms are available at a special rate for the weekend. Call 1-800-325-1709.

Lake Cumberland: An Ideal Summer Vacation Spot

May 23, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Lake Cumberland Houseboat Capital of the World

One of the most beautiful areas in all of Kentucky is the Lake Cumberland area. Lake Cumberland State Resort Park (one of our favorite parks) couldn’t ask for a lovelier setting. Lake Cumberland is known for its beauty and for great fishing, but it’s best known as the houseboat capital of the world – a title it’s proud of, for good reason.

With summer upon us, it’s time to start planning your summer vacation as well as mini-vacations and weekend getaways.  Or, like us, maybe you simply love to squeeze as much fun, sight-seeing, and picture-taking into one day as humanly possible.  However you prefer to roll, know this: You won’t find a better place to roll it out than Lake Cumberland and Lake Cumberland State Resort Park.

More boaters, anglers and vacationers are expected to head to Lake Cumberland this summer than ever as the lake’s water level rises about 20 feet following repairs to the dam.

“Lodging operators are anticipating a strong summer season,” said Carolyn Mounce, executive director of the Somerset-Pulaski County Convention and Visitors Bureau. ‘I bet my hat that we’ll be over 4 million visitors this year.”

Now, is that genuinely Kentucky or what? She went and bet her hat!

That figure would approach the record number of visitors reported in 2006, before Lake Cumberland was lowered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during repairs.

An abundance of lakes and streams across Kentucky makes our state a summer vacation playground.  The Bluegrass State boasts more miles of navigable water than any state other than Alaska.

Visitors who venture to Lake Cumberland for houseboating, skiing, fishing and relaxing can expect lots of fun this summer. The lake’s half-dozen marinas that rent houseboats, ski boats, water scooters and other water recreation equipment are ready to meet the anticipated increase in demand.

Houseboating is one of Lake Cumberland’s biggest claims to fame, with the lake’s many tranquil coves and inlets providing great places to anchor and enjoy the lazy days of summer. The operator of Lake Cumberland’s largest marina said bookings for the luxurious rental craft are up.

“We have 60 houseboats for rent,” said Bill Jasper, president of State Dock in Jamestown. “The lake’s coming back. We should have a great year.”

Meanwhile, fish should also be biting at the lake known as among the best for anglers in the eastern United States. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is adding 1 million walleye and striped bass to Lake Cumberland’s stock this year to give fishing a boost. Rising water atop the lake’s overgrown banks is expected to spur fish population growth. Spawns of crappie and trout should also be strong.

Mounce said boat and vacation shows she’s been attending are abuzz with talk about the resurgent Lake Cumberland. She advises travelers to make motel and other reservations at the lake as early as possible.

Lake Cumberland, Kentucky’s deepest and third largest lake in surface area, was lowered 40 feet by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2007 to ease pressure on Wolf Creek Dam and allow repairs. This summer’s level will reach approximately 700 feet above sea level. The normal level of about 720 feet will be achieved by spring 2014, creating a surface area of more than 50,000 acres, according to the Corps.

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

September 27, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park Lodge

Look at that beautiful view of Lake Cumberland!

Lake Cumberland State Resort Park near Jamestown will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of its lodge during the weekend of Sept. 28-29, 2012.

When I think of individual Kentucky State Parks, I associate certain “thumbprints” with each one.Ã?  I call them “thumbprints” because these are the traits that highly individual and, in a way, very identifying.Ã?  They give each park its own personality and character.

For example, when I think of Lake Barkley State Resort Park, In addition to the beautiful scenery, I think of the ridiculously gorgeous architecture of the lodge. I also think of their restaurant, Windows on the Water, because it’s one of the best restaurants in the Kentucky State Park system.Ã?  In fact, it’s one of the best restaurants in the entire Kentucky Lake region.

When I think of Rough River Dam State Resort Park, I think of the people. They’re great people who love their park, take pride in their park, and treat guests as well as the rest of us treat family when they visit.Ã?  Mike, the park manager, Dana (front desk), Geoff (naturalist/activity director), Captain Bill (boat tours), the restaurant staff, the golf course staff, the housekeeping staff… as I’ve said before on Genuine Kentucky – these are the sort of people we Kentuckians take great pride in.

They make all of us look great!

Rough River, like Lake Barkley, also conjures up beautiful images of its lake, herons, beautiful trees, and… quite honestly.. a photo op everywhere you look.

I also think of Rough River’s desserts! Coconut Pie, Blackberry Cobbler, Banana Pudding…

When I think of Lake Cumberland State Resort Park and Lake Cumberland, I also think of uncommon friendliness. The first time we visited, a man behind the desk welcomed us with a hearty, friendly, and very warm greeting. If anyone thinks little things like that don’t matter, their squirrel bait…. as in they’re nuts.Ã?  The restaurant staff at Lake Cumberland is also very friendly and upbeat.Ã?  Great people.

Another “thumbprint” of Lake Cumberland is the breathtakingly beautiful drive from the park entrance to the lodge. The tree lined road gets me every time.Ã?  I think of it as Kentucky just showing off.

The inside of the lodge is as comfortable and beautiful as any lodge.Ã?  And the view… wow!Ã?  This great, homey lodge is having its 50th anniversary this year and the ceremony is tomorrow (Friday, September 28, 2012)!

A ceremony will be held at the lodge on Friday at 11 a.m. Speakers will include Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker, Rep. Jeff Hoover and Russell County Tourism Director John Carter.

There will be special buffet meals on Friday and Saturday. A luncheon for former employees will be held on Saturday with lunch for $6.20. Drinks will be 62 cents during the weekend.

Special lodge room rates of $62 a night are available at the park through Sept. 30.

For information and reservations, call the park at 1-800-325-1709.
