Hot Dog Days of Summer at the Kentucky Legend Cafe in Owensboro (Located in the Convention Center)

My youngest daughter, Stephany, often talk about squeezing as much joy out of each season as possible. Actually, we don’t just talk about it, we do it!

The Joy Squeezing Includes…

  • ENDLESS lemonade in the summer months – we literally try every fast food and sit-down restaurant’s lemonades (and faithfully put our favorites on repeat). We also make our own.. I mean, summer calls for all the lemonade you can get your lips on!
  • Planting seeds in the spring and taking long drives through the country to see daffodils and other beautiful spring flowers and trees.
  • Sampling every restaurant and coffee house’s hot chocolate and chai lattes in the winter! When my husband and I are in a different town during the winter months, we seek out every chai latte in the area. It’s pretty hard to compete with Starbucks’, but a few come dangerously close.
  • Turning into hot dog and hamburger fanatics ALL summer, EACH summer! Seriously.. along with lemonade, it just isn’t summer without them.

Which brings us to something extra delicious and fun the Kentucky Legend Cafe is… excuse the pun on a bun… cooking up.

The following is a press release from the Owensboro Convention Center:

Ready for a taste of summer? OVG360, the provider of Venue Management to the Owensboro Convention Center is proud to partner with Kentucky Legend for a delicious take on a classic favorite!

Drawing upon July being National Hot Dog Month, the Hot Dog Days of Summer will feature a specialty hot dog Lunch Special at the Kentucky Legend Café for the remaining Fridays throughout July. Guests are invited to come and try them all!

Friday, July 8 – The Texas Dog:  Topped with chili, cheese, and jalapenos

Friday, July 15 – The Pastrami Dog: Topped with pastrami, Swiss cheese, mustard, and a pickle

Friday, July 22 – The Junkyard Dog: Topped with chili, mustard, grilled onions, and French fries

Friday, July 29 – The Seattle Dog: Topped with cream cheese, grilled onions, jalapenos, and Sriracha sauce

“I love the creativity of our Food and Beverage team!” stated Director of Marketing, Jeanette Goins. “Most people know the Chicago Dog, but these are also varieties you’ll find on menus all across the U.S. It’s great to be able to bring a taste of that here locally.”

“Obviously National Hot Dog Month is near and dear to us at Kentucky Legend! We couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of this creative celebration with the Owensboro Convention Center. We hope everyone can find some time to come on over and try one of our delicious hot dogs with a fun twist!” says Brooklyn Maple, Brand Manager for Specialty Foods Group, LLC.

The Kentucky Legend Café is located inside the Owensboro Convention Center and is open for lunch from 10am to 2pm Monday through Friday for dine-in and carry-out. All Daily Lunch Specials are $10 and come with choice of a side item or make it a combo with a drink for $12. Garden salad bar and soup of the day are also available. All major credit cards are accepted and prices include tax. For the complete menu, click here.

I hope you get a chance to try each one! They all sound wonderful.. in fact, they’re inspiring me to come up with one for my family this summer, an Owensboro Dog – complete with barbecue, sauce, onions, and chopped pickles. Add a little coleslaw to the situation and I think we’re on to something.

Kentucky Legend Café: Delicious Place to Enjoy Lunch in Owensboro, Kentucky

April 5, 2022 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Some of the more popular posts we’ve done on Genuine Kentucky have been the ones under the category “Where to eat in Owensboro, Kentucky.” Seems like we’re very fortunate here in Owensboro that we receive a lot of visitors from all around the area and each very much wants to know where the best places to eat are!

When it comes to eating lunch in Owensboro, there are lots of options but I want to highlight one, today, that’s kind of off the beaten path.

The beautiful Owensboro Convention Center isn’t just a great spot for activities and events here in Owensboro, it’s restaurant (The Kentucky Legend Café) is apparently an extraordinary place to eat!

Allow me to say, right up front, that I have never (personally) eaten at The Kentucky Legend Café. For health reasons, I can only eat gluten-free/wheat free and, to my knowledge, the wonderful café doesn’t have a gluten-free menu.

Sigh.

I have had several members of my family (including my husband) eat there and have given it glowing reviews.

The Kentucky Legend Café is open for lunch from 10am to 2pm Monday through Friday for dine-in and carry-out. All Daily Lunch Specials are $10 and come with your choice of side item.  Upgrade to a combo with a drink for $12.

Salad bar and soup of the day are also available.

While you can (and should) enjoy lunch at the beautiful Café anytime, they have something extra fun going on next week! See Lunch Specials at the Kentucky Legend Cafe for more information about this creative week.

More information:

The Owensboro Convention Center is located at 501 West 2nd Street.

Review: Old Hickory Bar-B-Que (Owensboro)

August 1, 2016 by Joi Sigers 1 Comment

Old Hickory Bar-B-Que Owensboro, Kentucky

Old Hickory Bar-B-Que Owensboro, Kentucky

When it comes to choosing a restaurant for lunch or dinner in Owensboro, it’s my experience that you cannot go wrong with Old Hickory Bar-B-Que.  When I say experience, I mean countless (literally) visits without a single disappointment.

How many restaurants can you say that about?

We like to call ourselves the Bar-B-Que Capital of the World here in Owensboro, so our BBQ had better be good! Thanks to Old Hickory, Moonlite, and Ole South… it’s not just good, it’s excellent.

I try not to fall into the old trap of choosing one of these three restaurants over the others because, quite frankly, I love having three way above par Barbecue restaurants in my city. Each one is fantastic – we tend to eat at Old Hickory more often than the other two, but I have nothing but great things to say about any of the three.

When I had to stop eating gluten/wheat, one of the first things I thought about was my restaurant reviews. I knew there’d be certain places I could no longer visit (Fazoli’s, Panera Bread, Feta’s, Kentucky State Park restaurants…) but I’ve been thrilled that a lot of my old favorites (before having to give up gluten) are now my new favorites (after having to give up gluten). Olive Garden, Mi Ranchito, Cracker Barrel, Denny’s, Old Hickory, Willow Pond (Aurora), Catfish Kitchen (Kentucky Lake), TGIFriday’s.. most restaurants have plenty of gluten free options and I’m over the moon grateful.

A Few of the Delicious Sides at Old Hickory

On our recent trip to Old Hickory, I forgot to say, “No bread..” so a few halves came on my plate. Normally I simply state that I don’t want any – I guess I was just too excited to be there this time and forgot.

The pulled pork bar-b-que, mutton, chicken, and ham are all more delicious than they have a right to be at Old Hickory. Their Sweet Heat barbecue sauce makes everything EVEN better. It’s so good I could drink it. Something else that sets Old Hickory apart from a lot of Bar-B-Que restaurants in Kentucky (or anywhere else, for that matter) is the sides. Some restaurants put so much energy into the meat they leave the sides to fend for themselves – but Old Hickory’s sides are phenomenal. Again and again and again.

As I’m sure I’ve said before, the only drawback to going to Old Hickory is the dilemma of trying to choose your meat and your sides – they’re all so ridiculously delicious, you want everything on the menu! If you happen to go with your spouse, you could always just do what we do – order different things and enjoy it all!

We’ve been working this system for a lot of years and I love it as much as I do sweet tea.

Old Hickory is located at 338 Washington Ave – just off Frederica St. You really don’t even need a GPS… your nose will let you know when you’re close!

Mellow Mushroom: Coming Shroom to Downtown Owensboro

March 29, 2016 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Mellow Mushroom, Downtown Owensboro
Mellow Mushroom: Coming Shroom to Owensboro!
If you’ve read my Review of the Mellow Mushroom in Bowling Green, you can pretty much guess how excited I am about them coming to Owensboro. The thought of a Mellow Mushroom in my town makes me giddy.

The picture of the day shows just one of the reasons I love Mellow Mushroom so much…. notice the sign, “Coming Shroom.” Yeah, they’re witty like that.

Combine a great personality with excellent food, throw in the fact that they’re cool enough to offer gluten free pizza, AND put them in a beautiful old building in downtown Owensboro with endless charm and ambiance and you have a recipe for certain success.

I can’t wait to walk through those doors!

The Owensboro Mellow Mushroom will be at 101 West Second Street. I’ll let you know as soon as they open!

Wasabi Express in Owensboro, Kentucky

January 20, 2016 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

Sushi at Wasabi Express in Owensboro, Ky

Sushi at Wasabi Express, Owensboro

Before Wasabi Express, I had never even considered ordering sushi. I’m not sure why but I never thought I’d like it. Fast forward to today… I could, honestly, eat sushi every single day of my life – IF it came from Wasabi Express.

There are actually two Wasabi Express restaurants in Owensboro now. The one I always go to is on Southtown (636 Southtown Blvd, right off of Frederica, near Wal-Mart). The new one is on Highway 54. I haven’t been to the new one, yet, but I hear that it’s just as excellent as the original.

This restaurant review was written BEFORE I had to start eating gluten-free. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to eat at Wasabi Express because I have no idea what (if anything) on the menu would be gluten-free. If you have to eat gluten-free, I would not recommend this restaurant. Many dishes include soy sauce which is not gluten-free – Tamari is a gluten-free soy sauce, but few restaurants use it.

I’m not sure how we got lucky enough to have two wonderful sushi restaurants in Owensboro, but I’m not going to question it, I’m just going to enjoy it. Often.

Wasabi Express also has great rice, and both their chicken soup and house salad are absolute legends. The menu also includes hibachi, appetizers, edamame, LOTS of sushi, and more.

It’s just a perfect, serene, and delicious place for lunch or dinner.
