The Most Underrated BBQ in Kentucky

June 9, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Sticky Pig, Madisonville

Dave’s Sticky Pig in Madisonville, KY

When reading (or writing) about the best barbecue in Kentucky, the “regulars” always come to mind – Old Hickory, Moonlite, Sonny’s… but you can get some off the charts fantastic BBQ “off the beaten path” as well.

Whether it’s Dave’s Sticky Pig in Madisonville, Ole South in Owensboro, or Hickory Heaven in Marion, Kentucky (I highly recommend all three!) – it’s fun and often delicious to branch out and see how others are making magic with barbecue, sauces, and sides.

Here’s the link to a great article on this very subject on First We Feast – The Most Underrated BBQ in Kentucky.

Marion Pit BBQ: Uncommonly Delicious, Any Way You Slice It

September 27, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Marion Pit BBQ Pork and Sauce

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que is the name, insanely delicious BBQ is the game.  Whenever Michael is in the vicinity of Marion, Kentucky, he makes a point of swinging by Marion Pit Bar-B-Que – whether it’s for a BBQ Pork Sandwich with Coleslaw (on the sandwich, mind you, not beside it) or for a pile of it to bring home for sandwiches or tacos, his car is incapable of driving PAST Marion Pit BBQ.

It must stop. Every time.

He recently brought home some pulled BBQ Pork and sauce (delicious sauce, too!) for supper.  I, personally, ate mine on a bun with pickle and onion but Michael wanted his in a quesadilla – he’s fancy, like that.  I added chopped green pepper, chopped red pepper, onion, and cheese to his pork and made him a quesadilla that left him smiling for hours.

I’ve also used this delicious pork in tacos before.

No matter what you do with it, it’s excellent.

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que is located at 728 South Main Street in Marion, Kentucky. The next time you’re even remotely in the area, you HAVE to swing by and grab some BBQ for the road. You’ll be SO glad you did.

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que: OFF the Beaten Path and OUT of this World

August 30, 2012 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Marion Pit Bar-B-Q in Marion, Kentucky

Is your mouth watering yet? Marion Pit Bar-B-Que is even more delicious than it looks!

When I showed my youngest daughter, Stephany, the picture above she said, “YUM! Can you get me one now?!“Ã?  Sigh. So like her father. I live with some Bar B Que fanatics, let me tell you. It’s a good thing we live in Owensboro, the Barbecue Capital of the World.Ã?  It goes beyond Owensboro, though. Here in Kentucky, we’re never at loss for great Barbecue.Ã?  In fact, if you find yourself riding down the main road in Marion, Kentucky and get a hankering for great Barbecue, you’re totally in luck.

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que (728 Main Street in Marion, Kentucky) is a drive up style restaurant.Ã?  They also have a drive through.Ã?  Because we like to sit and leisurely enjoy our masterpieces, we always eat our sandwiches in the covered picnic table area.Ã?  Let me tell you, this is one out of this world, extraordinary Pork Barbecue Sandwich.Ã?  My husband always orders it with coleslaw – right on the sandwich.Ã?  When he first suggested the approach to me, I thought maybe the boy had finally lost it.Ã?  However, he knows his barbecue like nobody else, so I took his suggestion.

Great call.  The coleslaw ON the BBQ Pork Sandwich is nothing short of amazing.

The potato salad is a great side, but the baked beans are my favorite. They’re dang good.

Make no mistake about it, though, the smokey, delicious barbecue pork is the star of the show and the pickles are perfection.Ã?  I HATE when barbecue restaurants try to get cute with exotic pickles (garlic-flavored, bread and butter…).Ã?  No, no, no. Marion Pit Bar-B-Que nails it – simple dill chip pickles make a barbecue pork sandwich perfect. The other pickles just distract from the main event.

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que also has buns that should be the envy of a lot of other Bar-B-Que restaurants.  Marion Pit Bar-B-Que has fresh soft buns that are JUST the way they should be. So, yeah, there should be some serious bun envy taking place.

Truth be told, they do everything right – but the star of the show… the main attraction… is the outstanding, uncommonly delicious bar-b-que. It sets a standard other bar-b-que restaurants should strive to follow.

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que is a wonderful, off-the-beaten-path little gem.Ã?  After just one bite, you’ll find yourself planning your next trip.Ã?  At the risk of stepping onto my soap box… oh, who am I kidding, I don’t mind OR hesitate… whenever you get the chance to support a local business, such as this, please do so.Ã?  Any time you can pass up large chain fast food restaurants and pull into a locally owned restaurant, you’ve done a beautiful thing.

It’s kind of like pulling into a neighbor’s driveway instead of a stranger’s.

We go out of our way (often quite literally) to support locally-owned and operated restaurants and businesses because we think of them as our neighbors.Ã?  If you don’t already do the same, I hope you’ll start.Ã?  Give them a chance… they’ll blow your socks off!

Marion Pit Bar-B-Que is located at 728 South Main Street in Marion, Kentucky.Ã?  They have a website that seems to be in the process of being built. You can keep an eye on itÃ?  here.Ã?  On a side note, having a website is a great idea. In this day and age, it’s a horrific idea NOT to have your own website.Ã?  A lot of restaurants are relying on Facebook, which is a less than great idea. Much less than great.Ã?  You need your OWN online presence – a place to send people to with YOUR images, YOUR brand, YOUR menu… with YOUR fingerprints all over the place, not Facebook’s.

If you have questions about websites and/or blogs, contact me. I can hook you up. I know people.Ã?  Heck, I am people….

UPDATE: Visit Marion Pit Bar-B-Que‘s Website for more information – then head straight for Marion, Kentucky for some of the best bar-b-que you’ve ever had.
