Mellow Mushroom in Bowling Green (Review)

September 9, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Mellow Mushroom

Mellow Mushroom: Fun, Friendly, and Freaking Delicious

You’d think the easiest restaurant reviews to write would be the ones for the best restaurants, wouldn’t you? Simply say, “I loved it, you’ll love it, now go!” and move on, right?

If only it were that easy.  In all actuality (for me, anyway), the better the restaurant, the tougher the review. I don’t want to overlook anything or leave anything out – so I wind up stressing over every little detail.

I am so in love with Mellow Mushroom that I’m going to attempt to cover it all without missing a beat.

First of all, everyone at Mellow Mushroom was friendly, warm, and upbeat.  They seemed genuinely thrilled to have us as guests. The hostess greeted us with a huge smile and made us kind of feel like she’d been expecting us.

As for our server… she was one of the friendliest and sweetest servers we’ve ever had.

She left such an impression on me that I still remember her name – Jordan.  For me, this is huge because I’m pretty terrible with names. She was knowledgeable, sweet, and lovely in every way.  Unlike a lot of servers in other restaurants, she completely understood what it meant to be gluten free and provided me with great information. On a scale of 1-10, she flew right past 10.

{Review continued below the gorgeousness…}

The Capri Appetizer, Mellow Mushroom (Bowling Green, Ky)

Outstanding Appetizer: The Capri!

We took her advice on an appetizer and were floored by it. O.M.G… it was one of the best, freshest, most delicious appetizers I’ve ever had.  It was called The Capri (Vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil drizzled with a balsamic glaze. Served with a side of spring mix tossed with an herb vinaigrette dressing.) and it was too Heavenly to even be believed.

So much flavor!

Not only was it one of the most delicious and memorable appetizers I’ve ever had, it was one of the most memorable dishes I’ve ever had in a restaurant. I’m not kidding, it was just ridiculously good.

Mellow Mushroom is Very Gluten Free-Friendly

One of the things that excited me the most about visiting Mellow Mushroom was the fact they (unlike so many restaurants) have a gluten free crust available. You can have any combination of toppings that are also gluten free and feel like a normal person doing something as normal as eating pizza!

It’s something far too many people take for granted.

I simply can’t tell you enough how wonderful it is for a restaurant to acknowledge the needs of their guests and go out of their way to accommodate them.  It makes me want to throw all of my business to them!

We couldn’t quite decide between the delicious toppings and combos available so went went “halfies” – half of the pizza was Kosmic Karma and half was Mighty Meaty.  Although the Kosmic Karma was good, the Mighty Meaty beat it by a smidgen. It was just stupid good.

The toppings, sauce, cheese…  all are uncommonly delicious.

It tasted as though the tomatoes used for the sauce were plucked right off a vine out back. Every bite brought about the same reaction, “Mmmmm, so much flavor!”

Mellow Mushroom – Fun Atmosphere and Delicious Food!

The Mellow Mushroom Vibe

While, if we were to assign “weightiness” to each wonderful attribute, the quality and taste of the food and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff would earn the highest points, I just have to say something about the overall vibe of Mellow Mushroom.  We’re a sports loving family, so I loved that there were sports on the tvs.  I also loved the bright, upbeat colors and overall fun and funky decor.

It was genuinely unlike other restaurants, and I got a huge kick out of that.

In summary, If you’ve never eaten at Mellow Mushroom (click the link for locations), do yourself a huge favor and find the one closest to you today. Whether you have to eat gluten free, choose to eat vegetarian, or pretty much eat anything you feel like eating – you’re going to find so many things to love at Mellow Mushroom.

Whatever you do, don’t forget The Capri as an appetizer!

The Bowling Green Mellow Mushroom is located at 1035 Chestnut Street. If you (like me) live in Owensboro, hold on to your hat, we’re getting one of our own Mellow Mushrooms. It’ll be downtown and, mark my word, I will be there at least once a week. I’ll be the one with “The Capri” one one side of her and a Gluten Free Pizza on the other.

Please click here to read about how dining out at Mellow Mushroom in the month of September can help end childhood hunger in America. The words “Childhood Hunger in America” simply should not exist should they?

Where Can You Find the Best Pizza When You’re at Kentucky Lake?

January 17, 2014 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Mama D's Italian Restaurant in Calvert City Collage

One of our favorite places to eat when we’re at Kentucky Lake is Mama D’s Italian Restaurant in Calvert City

A while back I raved and raved in a Mama D’s Italian Restaurant (Calvert City) Review. I threw adjectives around like they were baseballs in a Spring Training camp. I can’t help myself, really.  Food is a great passion of mine, whether I’m cooking or eating, and when I find people excelling in the sport, I get uncommonly excited. I want to tell everyone about it and….. well.. that’s when the adjectives take flight.

Watch your head the adjectives are about to fly again.

I had Mama D’s Italian Restaurant on my mind since our first visit.  I kept thinking, “If they made SUCH incredible bread and lasagna, what must their pizza taste like?!”

The mystery was almost more than this pizza fanatic could stand, so when we went back for our second visit, I told my husband (Michael) that, under no conditions, was I leaving that restaurant without trying one of their pizzas.

I kept my word.

Michael ordered a beautiful and tasty chicken and pasta dish – which came with bread and a salad. A very sound, economical decision.  I ordered a large pizza.

That’s how I roll.

I knew there’d be no way I could eat the whole thing, but I was up for the challenge.  Besides I just knew it’d be so incredible that Michael would jump in to help me out.  Plus, taking leftover pizza home always makes us heroes with the kids.

Oh, boy, was I ever right about Mama D’s Pizza. In fact, I honestly don’t recall when I’ve ever been SO right about anything. Every single bite was an experience in and of itself. Heck, just the sight of it, alone, was a culinary adventure.  The toppings were incredibly fresh, there was just the right amount of delicious sauce and cheese, and the crust? Wow. I could have eaten the crust all by itself and still been grinning ear to ear.

When our VERY sweet server came by to check on us after we’d been eating for a few minutes, I told her, “This pizza is so fantastic I never want to eat pizza again, just so this can be the last pizza I ever ate.”  She laughed and said I’d just have to keep coming back there for my pizza.

Not a problem.

Every single thing they do at Mama D’s Italian Restaurant is first class.  THIS is how Italian food is supposed to taste. The herbs and flavors are quite unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else and, trust me, once you go, you’ll return again and again. As soon as you step in the door, the aroma lets you know that you’re in for something extra, extra, extra special.

I’m also in love with the cleanliness of the restaurant and the happy, upbeat, and very friendly servers. Everyone seems genuinely thrilled to see you walk through the door and goes out of their way to make sure you’re well-fed and smiling when you leave.

Mama D’s in Calvert City is one of my favorite Kentucky restaurants – and if you read my restaurant reviews very often, you know that’s saying something. This gal has seen A LOT of restaurants!

I don’t care where you live, you just have to promise me that you’ll visit Mama D’s as soon as possible.  Whether you have the lasagna or pizza (the best pizza you’ve probably ever had), you’ll be blown away. Then YOU’LL be spewing adjectives all over the place.

Trust me.

Fetta is Now Open for Business in Owensboro (Review)

September 16, 2013 by Joi Sigers 2 Comments

I always get excited when I can announce a new restaurant in Kentucky, but I must admit, I get even MORE excited when it’s a restaurant in my own city.  Given the fact that pizza is involved, suffice to say I’m over the moon.

Fetta Specialty Pizza & Spirits has opened in downtown Owensboro at 118 St. Ann St. (in the exciting and ever-growing riverfront area).

I’d heard great things about Fetta from my youngest daughter (Stephany) and her husband (Rusty). When they joined me and my other two daughters for lunch Friday, it marked their third time eating at Fetta.  One of the owners even recognized them!

Steph and Rusty know their pizza, so their enthusiasm let the rest of us know we were in for great pizza.

When we arrived at Fetta, it was almost noon. Now, 12:00pm on a Friday – at a new restaurant everyone’s excited about – meant one thing: The place was HOPPING like a rabbit on Red Bull.

At first we were told by the hostess we’d have about a 20 minute wait. While we were deciding whether to wait or get carryout to eat by the river, a server came over and said she could clear a table off for us.  We all loved her wildly at that moment.

Allow me to warn you, right off the bat, Fetta is pretty small. Don’t let the picture fool you, the restaurant doesn’t extend upstairs. However, there is a patio out back (you’ll see it in the pictures below), so when the weather’s nice – there’s a lot more space. Also, there is a “walk up window” on the side that’ll soon be functional. You’ll be able to walk up, order your pizza, then take it to one of the many benches or parlor tables on the waterfront.

Of course, if you plan your visit better than we did (seriously, noon on a Friday?), seating probably won’t be an issue for you.  If your party is fairly large, however, be sure you have a plan B in place, just in case.

First Impressions

My first impressions (outside and inside) were fantastic. The brick building is gorgeous – there’s even a handsome cornerstone on the side of the building that’s in keeping with a “downtown” vibe. The scenery is beyond beautiful, thanks to the uncommonly lovely riverfront. There’s a certain buzz in the air now in downtown Owensboro that’s palpable. The electricity from this excitement only adds to the experience.

On the walls inside you’ll see canvas photos of the Riverfront.  These are a really, really, really nice touch.

I also noticed the wonderful aroma right off the bat. Not only was everything spotless and beautiful, it smelled amazing.

Everyone was uncommonly friendly and seemed genuinely thrilled for us to be there – in spite of the fact that they were incredibly busy.  We were treated like we were the only ones there and, let’s face it, that’s pretty rare these days.

Fetta Specialty Pizza & Spirits, Owensboo - Margaritaville Pizza Fetta’s Delicious Margaritaville Pizza

Fetta’s Specialty Pizza

Each pizza I’ve eaten and/or sampled from Fetta has been ridiculously delicious. My favorite is the Margaritaville pizza (above), with the White Bean and Sausage (below) right on its tail… and I do mean RIGHT on its tail.

You can order pizza at Fetta by the slice (featured pizzas are $3.50 a slice) or as a whole (featured pizzas are 16″ – $15 or 12″ – $10). There are also salads available, as well as desserts (cookies and cupcakes from Owensboro’s Cup Cakery).  You’ll find the menu in the gallery at the bottom of this review.

The only negative I’ve heard from anyone about Fetta has been the fact that their slices are not as large as you’d expect when ordering by the slice.  They aren’t as large as Sbarro’s slices, for example, and I think Sbarro’s pizza slices are what most people envision when ordering pizza by the slice.

Fortunately, Fetta has an easy solution. If you’re ordering a lunch, simply order a salad with your pizza or their FANTASTIC Garlic Knots as an appetizer. They’re out of this world. They come with your choice of marinara or cheese sauce – but, quite honestly, neither is even necessary. These little guys are fantastic.

Of course, there’s also an obvious solution: Go with at least one other person and order a whole pizza! They’re so delicious, you’ll want as much of it as you can get – including leftovers to take home with you, if you’re lucky.

My only negative experience was a VERY minor one – when I ordered a salad, our server broke the heartbreaking news to me: They don’t carry French dressing. AUGHHH!!!Ã?  I’m annoyingly picky when it comes to salads and salad dressings. French (or it’s “Plan B” version Catalina) is the only one I like, so I simply decided I didn’t want a salad after all.  I know I’m a picky butt, but there you have it. They do have just about every other kind you can name though.

Just not French. Again, the solution is painfully simple: Smuggle in a packet of French if it’s the dressing that floats your boat. I won’t tell on you if you don’t tell on me. Shhhhh…..

HAPPY EDIT: Fetta now has French! I checked with our server the last time we went and he told me the great news. The salad was out of this world – uncommonly delicious… and I got my beloved French dressing. Good on them!

Now on to the heart of the matter. Pizza!

Fetta Specialty Pizza & Spirits White Bean and Sausage Pizza

Fetta Specialty Pizza & Spirits White Bean and Sausage Pizza

The Margaritaville Pizza is so delicious, you’ll eat extra slow to savor each and every bite.  There are so many fresh and beautiful flavors, I couldn’t even begin to describe them all to you.  It is, quite simply, one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. I can only think of one pizza I enjoyed as much as this one – it was another fairly new Kentucky restaurant, Coppertop Brick Oven Pizza in Fredonia, Ky.

Next time I go to Fetta (and believe me there’s be too many “next times” to ever try to count), I’m definitely ordering the largest Margaritaville Pizza they have.

If you’re like us, you always plan extra cool snacks or meals around watching sports on tv – baseball, football, or basketball.  One of Fetta’s Specialty Pizzas would make any special game even more special… whether your team wins or not.

As delicious as the Margaritaville Pizza is, I also have to mention the White Bean and Sausage Pizza. It’s also too delicious for its own good. There’s a bit of a spiciness to it that makes it even better. Now that I think about it, when I order a larger Margaritaville Pizza, I’m going to grab a large White Bean and Sausage Pizza as well.

Wouldn’t want the Margaritaville Pizza to get lonely, now would we?

If you want a Monday Night Football (or a college gameday) your family will talk about for months, here’s all you need to do: Order two Fetta Pizzas to go – one Margaritaville and one White Bean and Sausage.

Believe me, the game will be the second most exciting thing happening.

Fetta Specialty Pizza & Spirits is located at 118 St. Ann St.  If you park in one of the parking lots at the end of Frederica, then walk toward the Riverfront, you’ll be mere steps from Feta… also known as mere steps from Pizza Heaven.

If you’ve been to Fetta Specialty Pizza & Spirits, please tell us in the comments which pizza is your favorite. Also, has anyone tried the salads or desserts yet??? Share your thoughts!

EDIT:  3/20/2015 – You may notice there aren’t any new posts, pictures, or reviews about Owensboro’s Fetta. It’s still in downtown Owensboro and I’m sure it’s just as delicious as ever… but I had to stop eating gluten/wheat for health reasons, so I’ve been unable to go back.  Like a lot of other old favorite restaurants, they’re just memories now – but when it comes to Fetta, the memories are excellent!

Rockhouse Pizza in Robards, Ky Has Gotten EVEN Better: From Perfect 10 to 110!

April 8, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Stromboli from Rockhouse Pizza in Robards, Ky!

Strombolis at Rockhouse Pizza in Robards, Ky are even better than ever – which is really saying something, because they’ve always been ridiculously delicious!

In a previous Rockhouse Pizza (Robards) Review, I extolled the many mouth-watering virtues of their perfect pizza.  Amazingly enough, some of the best pizza I’ve found in Kentucky can be enjoyed in tiny little Robards at Rockhouse Pizza.  That always blows my mind – as it thrills my taste buds.

Because of the outstanding pizza, I find it difficult to ever order anything BUT pizza, but I have always enjoyed sampling strombolis when my husband orders one.  He’s nearly as obsessed with strombolis as I am pizza, so he orders one every time we’re there.

On this particular trip, he convinced me to order a stromboli as well.  As part of my brain was saying, “But… PIZZA…,” another part (under the numbing influence of Benadryl),  just said, “Okey Dokey. Stromboli it is.”  Besides, I knew their strombolis were always fantastic.  He also ordered an order of bread sticks with cheese and marinara sauce as an appetizer.

Bread Sticks from Rockhouse Pizza in Robards, Ky!

The bread sticks came out first and, as you can see from the picture, they looked almost as delicious as they tasted. Perfectly perfect might be the best way to describe them. At that moment in time, I declared them the best bread sticks I’ve ever had and even now (several days later), I haven’t thought of any bread sticks that have ever been better.  They were fresh, soft, buttery, flavorful, and were a wonderful experience all by themselves!  On a scale of 1-10?  They blew right past 10.

Amazing.

The strombolis came out not long after the knock out bread sticks.  I let them know they had a lot to live up to because their “opening act” had rocked my world off its axis.  As I eyed the stromboli as I slid it onto my plate, I had a feeling it was up to the challenge.

I was right. I was SO right.

Veggie Stromboli from Rockhouse Pizza

As I said, their strombolis have always been amazing, but my husband and I agreed that they’re even better than before. The “veggie” stromboli before was simply cheesy – delicious, mind you, but really very little more than cheese, Heavenly bread, and sauce.  The Veggie Stromboli, now, is filled with the same delicious cheese and sauce but also has a fantastic mixture of veggies.  The stromboli with sausage was also out of this world.  Every aspect of Rockhouse Pizza’s strombolis are amazing, but (like their uncommonly good bread sticks), I think their real secret is their fresh and fabulous dough.  The bread is just ridiculously delicious.

It’s kind of ironic that we ended up going to Rockhouse Pizza Saturday because one of my daughters and I were talking just last week about some of our favorite Kentucky Restaurants to eat in – the ones who’s ambiance made us feel the most comfortable and relaxed. The restaurants that we simply enjoyed being in the most.  Rockhouse Pizza was one of the ones I named.  I simply enjoy eating there, plain and simple.  Sure, the UK Wildcats memorabilia doesn’t hurt.

It’s  a relaxed, comfortable setting with large tvs featuring sports and memorabilia expressing love for the state of Kentucky and its University of Kentucky Wildcats.

No wonder I love it, it reminds me of home.

The servers are always more than friendly and seem to be delighted when you walk through the door. While you’re there, it’s obvious that their number one goal is to make sure you have a perfect visit.  That’s one of the things I love most about these “off the beaten path” Kentucky restaurants. The friendliness is just unsurpassed.

Rockhouse Pizza in Robards, Ky!

The only suggestion I’d make when it comes to these amazing strombolis is a tiny, tiny one:  the addition of Ruffled Chips on the side.  I’d love to see Rockhouse Pizza serve a side of chips with their strombolis – even if they were an option that cost an extra dollar or so.  A lot of other places serve strombolis with Ruffled chips on the side and I’ve gotten pretty spoiled to the arrangement. Strombolis and Ruffeled chips go together like bread sticks and marinara sauce. You really don’t know what you’re missing until the chips suddenly aren’t there.  They, honestly, add a lot to the stromboli experience.

Because the strombolis are always SO great (and as I said, they were even better than ever this time!), we always order extra to bring home with us.  They always warm up beautifully for lunch the next day.  I bought a bag of Ruffles at the store and had them along with our warmed up strombolis the next day.

HEAVENLY!

I love everything about Rockhouse Pizza – the food, friendliness, atmosphere… even the beautiful drive to Robards from Owensboro. Any time you get a chance to get off the beaten path and experience the beautiful hills and farmland of Kentucky, go for it.  Especially if your drive leads you to some of the best pizza, strombolis, and bread sticks you’ve ever had in your life.

Yes, in Robards.

EDIT 3/25/2015: You may have noticed that there aren’t any Rockhouse reviews on Genuine Kentucky rectently – like a  lot of favorite restaurants, I had to stop going as soon as I had to start eating gluten/wheat free. BUMMER! They’re still in business and they’re still amazing. I have it on very good authority that they might just be more delicious than ever. Like I said… BUMMER! – Joi
