One of Our Favorite Bowling Green Restaurants: Rafferty’s

March 9, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Rafferty's Salad with Bleu Cheese Dressing

Bowling Green restaurants almost always amaze me.  You’ll find lots of Bowling Green restaurant reviews on Genuine Kentucky to back that up.  As far as cities go, Bowling Green is in the upper echelon when it comes to restaurant management.

Do they have a training facility where they train restaurant managers and staff the way Samurai warriors were trained?  If so, well played Bowling Green, well played.

I’m a small town girl (born and raised in Madisonville who now calls Owensboro home), so I have to say I couldn’t handle Bowling Green’s traffic on a daily basis – I don’t have a lot of patience and I have even less driving skills – but I am obsessed with their restaurants.

The most recent restaurant my husband and I fell in love with is Bowling Green’s Rafferty’s.

With all the respect a Kentucky girl could muster (and that’s a lot), I must tell you that you only THINK you’ve had the best baked beans in the world.  Unless you’ve had Rafferty’s Spike’s Mean Beans, you have only had the second or third best baked beans. Let me assure you, baked beans are one of my culinary obsessions.  I know my beans like Popeye knows spinach, like Bugs Bunny knows carrots, and like Yogi knows Pic-i-nic baskets.

Spike’s Mean Beans are the most flavorful and delicious baked beans in the world. They don’t just have a “kick,” they have a ninja kick.  Evil Spike Beans trained in the art of assassination and espionage of all other restaurant baked beans!

But let’s start at the beginning.

First of all, Rafferty’s is a showplace.  This is one gorgeous restaurant – inside and out. Everywhere you look, all you see is beauty. The ambiance is beautiful, the tables are gorgeous, the architecture is stunning, and the ceilings are too cool for their own good.

Yes the ceilings.  Yes I looked.  I am the very definition of a visual person and am utterly fascinated with architecture and decor.  When a building, home, or restaurant goes out of its way to impress me, you’d better believe I’m going to make a big deal about it (which is why I”m always crowing about Lake Barkley State Park‘s gorgeous lodge).  I SO wanted to take a picture of the inside of the restaurant – yes, even the ceiling – but there were simply too many people.  I didn’t want to look like a tourist or a nut for crying out loud.

Suffice to say, the restaurant is stunning.

Rafferty's Salad with Catalina Dressing

Our lovely server (“Murray” – I remember her name because I fell in love with it) was extremely friendly and totally on top of her game.  She, like every worker I saw, smiled the entire time as they worked in their beautiful environment.  I noticed the workers helped one another out a lot and just seemed genuinely happy. I saw something I really, really liked – a manager (in his nice shirt, slacks, and tie) helped a young girl bus several tables.  You don’t see that every day, but it stood out as pretty special.

I can’t put my finger on it, but every single employee I saw seemed to be giving 100 percent.  You know what it reminds me of, now that I think about it? When we have family over for a holiday, birthday dinner, or Sunday meal, each one of us goes out of our way to make sure everyone is comfortable.  Heaven knows I obsess over making sure the food’s just right. Our only concern is that our much-beloved guests have a “perfect” day.  Of course we’re all smile on these occasions because we’re happy.

The staff at Rafferty’s struck me as a family that was entertaining other family members or friend. Try telling me that’s something you’ve experienced at a lot of restaurants.

We ordered a salad (around $3 extra) to go with our meal and, let me tell you, that was a great call.  This was one spectacular salad. Rafferty’s salads are generous, fresh, and fantastic. Riding in on the salad plate was a little bit of Heaven in the form of a croissant.  SO delicious! There was a buttery honey flavor that nearly made me melt out of my seat. Come on, nothing has a right to be that delicious – it just isn’t fair.  When you go to Rafferty’s, no matter what you order, add a salad. For just $3 or so, it’s money very well spent and it’s more than worth it.

Michael got Blue Cheese dressing and I chose Catalina. Both were excellent.  They have a lot of amazing sounding dressings to choose from including Mustard-Honey, Garlic Ranch, Hot Bacon, Vinaigrette, and 1,000 Island.

Rafferty's Fried Catfish and Spike's Mean Beans

I, of course, ordered fried catfish as my entree with (one of the best choices of my life) Spike’s Mean Beans as my side. The catfish at Rafferty’s is like fried catfish I’ve had a few other places (usually high brow restaurants) – the catfish is breaded in a flour-dominated mixture as opposed to a cornmeal-dominated mixture.  Personally, I have to say that I much prefer the cornbread coating. Most people like it both ways, but I’m very particular with my catfish. You could even say picky, I don’t mind.  My husband loved this fried catfish and, in spite the fact that it had a flour-based rather than cornmeal-based coating, it was very, very, VERY good. They give you a generous amount and the catfish is plump. juicy, and full of intoxicating flavor.

The picky butt behind these words simply likes for her fried catfish to wear different attire than her fried chicken.

The tartar sauce that accompanied the catfish was herb-y and fantastic.

I have to say, however, that Spike’s Mean Beans stole the show.  They were so darn good, it’s not even funny.

My husband ordered a pork entree and, after one bite, declared that it was the best pork he’s ever had at any restaurant. I pulled away from my beans long enough to take a bite and, by George, the boy was right.  This pork is unlike any I’ve ever had. You just cannot find pork this tender and flavorful anywhere else.  Words are failing me here (and I work with them all day, every day – how dare they fail me at a time like this?!); I guess the words BEST PORK EVER will have to suffice.

You can choose special toppings for your meat entrees and my husband chose “Blue Cheese Butter.” Outstanding!

He also, of course, ordered grilled asparagus. The boy is obsessed with asparagus like I am obsessed with catfish,  baked beans, and onion rings. It’s a complete and utter obsession. When Murray mentioned that they had grilled asparagus, even though it wasn’t listed on the menu, his eyes lit up. I knew what his side would be.

Rafferty's Pork Chop and Grilled Asparagus

Sometimes ordering asparagus in restaurants can be tricky.  A pet peeve is when they haven’t trimmed (or snapped) the asparagus at the right place – leaving you with a tough end. Hate that! Rafferty’s grilled asparagus was absolute perfection. It was amazing. The grilled flavor, combined with the fact that they cooked it for just the right amount of time, combined with the fact that they snapped it off at JUST the right place make Rafferty’s grilled asparagus an absolute delicacy.

So let’s review:

  • Gorgeous restaurant.
  • Friendly, warm, and happy staff.
  • Best pork in the world. Period.
  • Best baked beans in the world. Period.
  • If not THE best bread in any restaurant, it’s in the top 3. None beat it and only O’Charley’s and Logan’s can hang with it.
  • One of the best salads I’ve ever had in a restaurant.
  • Amazing grilled asparagus.
  • Did I mention the best baked beans in the world?

What are you waiting for? Throw on your shoes and drive to the Rafferty’s nearest you right now.  If Bowling Green is at all within reach, I completely and totally suggest you have your next meal at their Rafferty’s (address below).

Before going, you can check out Rafferty’s Menu online. You can scroll to the bottom and click on the Rafferty’s location you’ll be visiting. Be sure to also check out the interactive menu in the middle of the page. Click Next and Previous above the image to navigate through the pages. More restaurants should have a beautiful interactive menu like this one. It’s pretty slick.

As you’ll find, Rafferty’s is perfect for lunch or dinner.

Find a Rafferty’s Restaurant Near You!

In addition to Bowling Green, there are Rafferty’s restaurants in Paducah, Elizabethtown, Florence, and there are two Rafferty’s in Lexington, and two in Louisville.  (Owensboro, we are not on the list… let’s fix this, okay?)

Bowling Green’s Rafferty’s is at 1939 Scottsville Road.  For the address of the Rafferty’s Restaurants in the other Kentucky cities (or neighboring states), visit the Rafferty’s locations page.

Trust me on this one, I would never steer you wrong. Rafferty’s will blow you away…. just promise me you’ll order Spike’s Mean Beans.

Outback Steakhouse in Bowling Green, Kentucky: A Raving Review

March 4, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Outback Salad

We ate at Outback Steakhouse in Bowling Green, Kentucky about a week ago and I’m already craving their steak, garlic mashed potatoes, and Chocolate Covered Heaven they call dessert again.  In fact, writing this restaurant review is making it hard to think about anything but their amazing food!

The iced tea was perfect, the hostess was a sweetheart and our server was totally on the ball.

One of the things I’ve always loved the most about Outback (in addition to the Bloomin’ Onion!) is their great menu. Restaurants that give you precious few options give me a precious migraine.  Outback has a fun wide variety of steaks, seafood, chicken, salads, appetizers, soup, desserts, and sides and I love them for that.

(Click here to check out a few delicious featured items like Crab Stuffed Mushrooms and Strawberry Waffle Shortcake – yes, you read that right… and you’re welcome.)

I love, love, love restaurants that provide you with complimentary bread and butter and keep it coming. Outback’s bread is as unique as their Bloomin’ Onion and our server never let us run low. He’s cool like that.

I also love a great salad. When a restaurant serves me a salad that looks like it came from a bag of tossed salad from Kroger, I’m tempted to tell the server, “You can have this back.”  I never do, of course, because that would be tacky and my mom and dad didn’t raise a tacky daughter.  An over-spending, free-spirited, tree-hugging, coffee-addicted animal lover that drives too fast? Yes. But never tacky.  So I simply sit a disappointing salad to the side and occasionally scowl at it.

My mother would approve.

The salads at Outback never make me scowl. They’re simply beautiful. And fresh. And fantastic.  If we’re being 100 percent honest, though, I don’t care much for their French dressing. It tastes closer to Russian dressing.  I think it lost itself somewhere around Belarus or Poland (praying that my high school geography is finally paying off here). While I was eating my salad, my husband asked me how it was. I told him the salad, itself, was amazing but that I couldn’t decide if I loved or hated the dressing.

Curiosity made him reach over and take a bite for himself.  He thought about it and said, “You’re right.”  The dressing is sweet, though – I’ll give it that.  While I tried to get a handle on my relationship with my dressing, he said his Blue Cheese Pecan Chopped Salad was perfectly delicious.

Outback Salad

Great. So why I’d have to choose “It’s complicated” as my Facebook relationship status with MY dressing, he was able to say he was in a happy relationship with HIS dressing. Dressing envy ensued.

We both chose the Create Your Own Signature Steak option on the menu. He ordered his steak “Classic” and I chose “Wood-Fired Grill.”  We were both convinced that our own personal choice was the best.  Truth be told, you can’t possibly go wrong with steak at Outback. They know what they’re doing.  Michael ordered a Blue Cheese Crumb Crust as an “add on” (what is it with this boy and Blue Cheese???). I didn’t choose any add on because the only thing I want between me and my steak is opportunity.

The steaks were beyond delicious – juicy, full of flavor you only get with a grilled steak, and cooked just like we ordered.

Outback Steak and Asparagus

Michael ordered grilled asparagus as a side while I went with a favorite, garlic mashed potatoes. The asparagus was perfect.  As someone who cooks a lot (I’d say daily qualifies for a lot, right?), I know there’s an art to getting asparagus “just right.”  You don’t want to break a tooth when you bite into your asparagus, but – at the same time – limp, soft asparagus that has lost the will to live is a culinary sin.  There’s a tiny window of opportunity to get asparagus just the way it should be and Outback does it like a champ. This asparagus was dead on perfect.

I’m equally wild about their garlic mashed potatoes. Outstanding. Outbacks garlic mashed potatoes are as good as anyone’s.

Some restaurants only give you one side with your meat, charging you extra for a salad. I love that Outback gives you a side and throws in the salad as well with the Choose your Signature Steak plan.  When you find a restaurant that either gives you two sides or throws in a salad like Outback, program them into your GPS and visit them as often as family. That you like.

Generous restaurants are a dying breed.  Seriously, restaurants are getting chintzy.

Outback Steak and Garlic Mashed Potatoes

In the name of keeping calories within a range we can live with, we normally either choose an appetizer or dessert when eating out. The husband was more in the mood for dessert than he was for an appetizer on this trip, so I didn’t get to cozy up with one of my beloved Bloomin’ Onions.  To keep our trip home to Owensboro from being a LONG one for him, he did – to his credit – make sure he ordered dessert which involved chocolate. A must when you’re married to a chocoholic like he is.

We got the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under. Oh. My. Heavens. SO GOOD!  Outback’s website describes it like this: An extra generous pecan brownie is topped with rich vanilla ice cream, drizzled with our warm chocolate sauce and finished with chocolate shavings and whipped cream.

I describe it like this, Oh. My Heavens. SO GOOD!

We’re both right.

The Chocolate Thunder from Down Under is a mind-blowing creation. It’s more delicious than any dessert has a right to be.

Outback's Chocolate Thunder from Down Under

This is some of the best chocolate this chocoholic has ever tasted and.. yes, as a matter of fact, I am an expert.

I don’t care where you live, you have to make your way to Bowling Green’s Outback Steakhouse. The food will blow your mind.

A special note to my neighbors in and around Owensboro, Kentucky (as well as Henderson, Madisonville, Sebree, Hanson…): I know a lot of you frequently go to Evansville, Indiana for shopping and dining. Evansville has restaurants we don’t have in Owensboro (yet) and it has a much bigger mall than we have in Owensboro (as of now… God willing that may change one day… would it help to beg?). Rather than heading off for Evansville, why not head for Bowling Green and keep your money in your own state?!  Bowling Green has everything you enjoy about Evansville. If it’s been a while since you visited Bowling Green, you might be surprised.

This little girl has really grown up…. and filled out nicely!

Yes. Yes. This is me on my “Keep your money in Kentucky whenever possible!” platform but it’s even more a case of  me offering my sexy, cool, intelligent, and witty readers the best advice possible. Bowling Green has some of the best restaurants in the entire area. They’re managed beautifully, impeccably staffed, and I can’t recall the last time I got bad service at a Bowling Green restaurant.  You get “all that” served up with Kentucky’s infamous Southern hospitality.

Shopping is also outstanding in Bowling Green. The Greenwood Mall has 100 or more stores and I personally can’t think of one they DON’T have.

Seriously. Why even think of crossing a state border?  Just promise me you’ll make a date with Bowling Green soon. You won’t believe what you’ve been missing.

Picture of the Day: Mouth-Watering Thai Pasta Salad from Double Dogs in Bowling Green

February 21, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Thai Pasta Salad Double Dogs Bowling Green

When I started thinking about today’s picture of the day, I felt it was time for a food pic. Here in our beautiful state, we have some exceptional Kentucky restaurants to be proud of.  Highlighting and reviewing those who are doing things the right way gives me a significant amount of joy.  So I’m always game to shine a little spotlight on the best of the best.

Double Dogs in Bowling Green, Kentucky is as good as it gets. As an animal lover, I’m wild about the fact that they love dogs so much. The atmosphere is fun, the servers are exceptional, and the food never fails to make me smile as I savor each and every bite. If you’ve never eaten at Double Dogs, you’re missing out on an amazing experience and uber amazing food.  You can read my Double Dogs in Bowling Green Review for more information (you can read yet another Double Dogs Review here).

The picture above? It’s simply the best pasta salad in the world, that’s all. Available as a side or as a main entree, Double Dog’s Thai Pasta Salad is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. If you read many of my Kentucky Restaurant Reviews, you know I’m straight up obsessed with onion rings – as in I order them any time I see them on a menu. I honestly put this Thai Pasta Salad on par with onion rings as far as exceptionally delicious sides go.  Naturally, Double Dogs also has unbelievably perfect onion rings.

Does everything they do have to be extraordinary?!  And if so, can they not open a restaurant in my hometown of Owensboro? Would it help to beg?

Raving Double Dogs in Bowling Green Kentucky Review

August 20, 2012 by Joi Sigers 1 Comment

Double Dogs in Bowing Green, Kentucky

In my last Double Dogs in Bowling Green Review, I told you just how incredible their hamburgers and fries are. Again, they’re out of this world. So much so that it was difficult to order something else on our most recent trip. I kept thinking about the perfect fries and mouth-watering, delicious burgers.  My desire to have new food to write another review won out, though, and I stepped away from the burgers and fries (not even remotely easy to do).

Fortunately, Double Dogs has a wide range of choices on their menu. You can find everything from wings, burgers, chili dogs, and pizza to tossed salads, pasta salads, and chicken sandwiches. Everything looked so good and sounded so perfect that it was difficult for me to decide.  Michael went with a game plan: Chili Dog.  It wasn’t just any chili dog, as you can see from the picture below… it was a beast! When I saw it, I thought, “Now there’s a man’s chili dog.”  It also smelled incredible, I could smell the amazing chili across the table.

Chili Dog at Double Dogs

We ordered a large order of onion rings (pictured at the top) as an appetizer and they were darn good – outstanding, even.  If they aren’t the best onion rings in Kentucky, they’re certainly one of them.  As you know, I eat onion rings everywhere we go, so I know my rings like a jeweler knows hers. Double Dogs onion rings are spectacular – whether you use their delicious sauce, their Heinz Ketchup (good on them!), or no condiment whatsoever. Excellent, excellent rings. Just look at the delicious coating in the picture.  SO GOOD!

I decided to order a Greek Salad.  It came with the option to add Grilled Chicken or Shrimp for a little extra.  I love shrimp as much as I love catfish and onion rings, so my choice was an easy one. When my Greek Salad came, with 5 huge, succulent grilled shrimp riding shotgun, my eyes popped out of my head. What a gorgeous presentation! I always get a special kick out of a dish that knows how to make an entrance, and Double Dog’s Greek Salad excels at making an entrance.

Double Dogs in Bowling Green, Kentucky

The salad is composed of fresh, healthy, and delicious team players:

  • feta cheese
  • toasted pita triangles
  • spinach
  • lettuce
  • tomatoes
  • roasted red peppers
  • cucumbers
  • black olives
  • artichokes
  • probably the best vinaigrette ever made – EVER

With, of course, the beautiful and delicious shrimp I added.  Sometimes people wonder if a salad will be “filling” enough.  This one certainly was.  I only wish I had another one sitting right in front of me at this moment.

Double Dogs iced tea’s even outstanding!  Our server was nothing short of perfect. She couldn’t have been any friendlier and frequently brought us refills.  I loved that she did so without even asking.  It’s always kind of funny when a server asks if we want refills when we’ve barely eaten anything.  This young lady was as on the ball as any server I’ve ever encountered. She also nailed two other things that separate a good server from a bad server: She asked if we wanted dessert BEFORE bringing our ticket and she asked if we wanted drinks to go.

Our adorable little brunette server was all over her game. If I ran a restaurant, I’d want an entire staff just like her.

Double Dogs is located at 1780 Scottsville Road in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  They’re open for lunch every day at 11:00. They’re open till midnight Sunday through Wednesday and till 1:00 am Thursday through Saturday. View their menu online and plan your course of attack.
