Cedar Pond: Showing Off Its Autumn Beauty….

November 7, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Cedar Pond, Land Between the Lakes in Autumn

Cedar Pond, Land Between the Lakes

When we’re in the beautiful Land Between the Lakes (and, if you read Genuine Kentucky regularly, you know that’s often), we have a routine that my husband has come to expect. I MUST be driven to Cedar Pond where I can get out and have fun with my camera. If there are people (how dare they visit my pond??!) at the pond, we simply drive around until they’ve vamoosed.

Like the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm, Cedar Pond is just across the Tennessee state line in the LBL.  Like the entire LBL, this is an absolutely gorgeous little spot. Winter, spring, summer, fall – it doesn’t matter, Cedar Pond never fails to take my breath away. It’s the very definition of peacefulness and, let’s face it, in the world today we need all of that we can get.

I love the way the trees along the far side of the pond reflect in the water. The pictures in this post are from this autumn (just a few weeks ago), so the reflections were especially colorful.

When you get out of your vehicle (or off your bike!) and walk around, you’ll find even more to see and love… you may even find something that makes you say, “Eeeekkk!” and run like you’re in a race. On this particular trip, I saw a snake skin and before my brain could notify my feet that there was, in fact, no one home… my feet were already in motion.

I probably looked like one of those cartoon characters who actually come off of the ground as they start to motor.

Suffice to say this gal has an unreasonable, unhealthy, unequaled, and undeniable fear of snakes.

Next time you’re in the Land Between the Lakes, be sure to stop by Cedar Pond. I can’t say enough wonderful things about this quiet* little spot.

* Quiet – unless a certain Kentuckian is shrieking and running to her husband. When she isn’t around, it’s beautifully quiet.

Bobcat Point in the Land Between the Lakes (Picture of the Day)

Bobcat Point in the Land Between the Lakes

While there are more things to do in the Land Between the Lakes region than you could count… even if you took your shoes off and went all the way to 20!…  one of our favorite things to do is simply drive around and lose ourselves in the beauty that is Kentucky. Bobcat Point is a wonderful place to do just that.

The pictures in this post will describe the beauty of the area far better than words could, so I’ll just let them do all the talking.

Kentucky Pictures of the Day: Indian Pink Flowers at the Nature Station in the LBL

January 24, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Indian Pink at Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes
Few things in nature fill me with as much joy as a blooming flower. I once read something that said flowers were God smiling. Love that – all the way to the moon and back.

These beautiful flowers were in full bloom at Woodlands Nature Station in the Land Between the Lakes last summer. The animals and birds aren’t the only beautiful things at this one of a kind place! The flowers, trees, and other ornamental plants are always a joy to see and photograph.

With Genuine Kentucky, I have the great fortune of speaking with a lot of photographers (usually amateur, like myself) around the state. Inevitably, I find a way to let them know that they simply MUST get to the Land Between the Lakes and see (and photograph) all there is to see (and photograph). Woodlands Nature Station is just one of the beautiful spots I urge them to visit.

I also strongly recommend (okay, maybe I nag) the LBL to parents, animal lovers, tree huggers, flower lovers, etc.

There is something for everyone and then some.

Am I nagging again? I’m nagging again.

Enjoy the pictures – and get your beautiful self to the LBL as often as possible this year. Odds are I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one (more likely than not) wearing something related to the St. Louis Cardinals and taking pictures fast and furious of every bird, animal, tree, flower, and occasional smug turtle.

Beautiful Heron Enjoying a Beautiful Day in the Land Between the Lakes

Heron in the Land Between the Lakes

Beautiful Heron in the LBL

This is one of those days I wish I could twitch my nose, Samantha-Style, and magically get things done.  The number of things needing to be done is an unfair ratio to the number of people sitting in this chair.

First things first, though, and that generally means Genuine Kentucky!

Michael and I enjoyed arguably the most beautiful day of the year in the Land Between the lakes Saturday and, although I don’t have time today to get ALL of the pictures up on the website, I wanted to at least post the pictures of this gorgeous heron.

The vivid blues and green contrasted perfectly with some of the most beautiful cloud formations I’ve seen in a long time. No doubt about it, God was at His most artistic this past weekend and… as a result… I found it impossible to put my camera down.

I’ll post more pictures tomorrow of Kentucky Lake, the Land Between the Lake and Kenlake State Resort Park.
