September Events in The Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area

Land Between the Lakes - Kenlake Marina at Kenlake State Resort Park Whenever you’re in the Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area, you’ll want to visit Kenlake State Resort Park!

There’s always something going on in the beautiful Land Between the Lakes region, and September is no exception.

Saturday, September 24, Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area will be waiving fees at participating day-use facilities in honor of National Public Lands Day (NPLD).

Description: 2010PublicLandsDay.JPGGeneral admission to The Homeplace (HP), Woodlands Nature Station (NS), Elk & Bison Prairie, and the Golden Pond Planetarium (GPP) show at 1pm will be free. Wranglers Campground will also be waiving day-use riding fees.

NPLD, a program of the National Environmental Education Foundation, supports the goals of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Outside initiative by offering activities at sites around the country to reconnect Americans to the outdoors and encourage family recreation. LBL will join other National Forests and National Parks across the United States in participating in our nation’s largest one-day volunteer event for public lands. There will be opportunities for volunteers to participate in a shoreline clean-up or a trail maintenance project.

It is recommended, but not necessary, to call to register for volunteer work early. Registrations should be made by September 23, especially larger groups. There will be two events taking place that day. The first event is from 8:30am-3:30pm: a trail project on the Fort Henry Trail, meeting at South Welcome. The second event is from 8am-12pm: a hike/canoe/kayak shoreline cleanup at Honker Dam. Volunteers should bring lunch, a water bottle, and dress for outdoor work. For more information on these projects, check out www.friendsoflbl.org or call 270-924-2007.

“Helping Hands for America’s Lands is the 2011 theme for National Public Lands, this is an inspiring way to celebrate public lands and give back to your favorite places,” said Emily Schmadeke, Volunteer Coordinator for “Friends of LBL.” “We appreciate our awesome volunteers who donate their time throughout the year to make LBL a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable place for everyone.”

“This is a great opportunity for families, and especially groups, who want to demonstrate their appreciation for the environment,” said John Rufli, “Friends of LBL” Executive Director. “It’s a great tradition to start for families or groups that gives you the satisfaction of making a contribution to your community.”

38th Annual Camper’s Fair Returns to LBL’s Piney Campground

This is no ordinary weekend camping trip! Set up your campsite at Piney Campground’s 38th Annual Camper’s Fair, Sept. 21-25, and enjoy a variety of activities including arts, crafts, and evening entertainment. Piney is located in Tennessee on the south end of Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area.

Piney is open to the public at no admission fee, Saturday, Sept. 24, from 8am-4pm and Sunday, Sept. 25, from 10am-2pm, for the open house. Displays of camping equipment, RVs, and boats will be provided by area dealers. Piney campers are invited to bring arts and crafts to display at the flea market. Campers wishing to participate in the displays need to notify Piney Campground gatehouse staff upon entering the campground.

“The Camper’s Fair is a great way to celebrate the end of summer,” says Derrick Washington, Piney Campground Manager. “Campers can come out and have a good time with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. If you are considering getting into camping, it’s the perfect event to check out the different types of gear available.”

Piney Campground offers scenic lakefront and wooded sites, which accommodate tents and large motor homes; sites range from primitive to full hook-up. Rustic camping shelters are available as well. Campers can enjoy Piney’s hiking and biking trails, ball courts and fields, playground, and pavilion. Picnic tables and fire rings are provided. The campground also has two boat ramps, a fishing pier, a swimming beach, and bike and camping equipment rentals.

Bryans’ Costume Ball Set for Sept. 23 at Bell House in Lexington

Bell House in Lexington Kentucky

The Bryans’ Costume Ball will be held Sept. 23 to benefit Waveland State Historic Site in Lexington.

The ball will start at 6:30 p.m. at Bell House in Lexington. Music, dancing, food, costumes and more will fill this nostalgic evening. Bell House, a grand antebellum reception house on Bell Court just off East Main Street, provides the perfect setting. Guests are invited to gather from 6 to 6:30 for appetizers and costume change. At 6:30, the Lexington English Country Dancers will teach easy dances, Jane Austen style (if you can walk, you can do them). No need to bring a partner.
The Capital City Country Dance Orchestra from Frankfort will provide dance tunes, striking up the first dance at 7 p.m. Featured will be a Grand March – a procession to music, guided by a leader – for everyone.

The admission fee of $20 per person covers dancing and lessons; gourmet hors d’oeuvres; a chance to see Bell House, and a new exhibition of decorative arts from Waveland’s huge collection of donated artifacts. Proceeds go to the Friends of Waveland to help preserve and enhance the beauty of Waveland State Historic Site.

Waveland, home of Joseph Bryan, and Bell House, built by the Bell family, are both historic residences. Waveland was built in the 1840s at what is now a state park near Man O’ War Boulevard and Nicholasville Road, but it has no ballroom. Bell House, which burned and was rebuilt in the lavish style of the late 19th century, has space for dancing and mingling.

The costume theme is inspired by the late 19th-century social whirl of Bell House. Imagine a fancy dress party in the 1890s. Guests at such parties loved to wear Victorian versions of historic dress such as Medieval, Renaissance, Colonial or Regency styles. They also liked to dress as European peasants, ancient Greeks, fairy tale and Shakespeare characters, even concepts such as “Summertime” or “The Man in the Moon.” (Dressing rooms for men and women are available at the Bryans’ Ball). The range of costume possibilities is wide open, and modern formal wear is also appropriate. Costumes are not required.

Advance registration is requested by Sept. 15. Reserve tickets through Waveland, 225 Waveland Museum Lane, Lexington, 859-272-3611.

Kentucky Adventures in Fall and Winter… There’s Still Plenty to Do!

Panther Creek Park in Owensboro, Kentucky

The end of summer doesn’t mark the end of adventure in Kentucky! There are plenty of fun things left to do and wonderful things to see during the fall and winter months in Kentucky.  For one thing, hiking the trails in our beautiful state parks and city parks (like Panther Creek Park, pictured above) isn’t just fun, it’s good for you.

If you take a camera, you’ll find photo opportunities everywhere you look.  My dad was an avid photographer and he’d take some amazing pictures – not just of the gorgeous roses in his rose beds, but of trees, sunsets, hills, animals, etc.  He’d have his favorite pictures enlarged and my mom would mat and frame them. They made beautiful art work for the walls – art work that just LOOKED expensive.

If you have a really good camera and an even better eye for photography, it’s something you might want to consider.  Pictures like these would make cherished Christmas presents.

Head Outdoors this Fall and Winter in Kentucky

It’s great to get outside during the cooler temperatures during this time of year in Kentucky,” said First Lady Jane Beshear. “There’s plenty of nature to see and experience throughout our state and being outside is a good way to get healthy and stay fit.”

Here is a listing of some adventure tourism events in Kentucky during November and December. To learn about other events, visit www.tourism.ky.gov/outdoors/.

Louisville Zoo: The Best Halloween Party in Town

The greatest zoo in the world will be holding the greatest Halloween party in the world.  How’s that for appropriate?

Meijer presents “The World’s Largest Halloween Party!” at the Louisville Zoo October 8-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-30, 2010

Be seen, not scared. The sweetest Halloween party in town is almost here.

For 14 nights in October (October 8-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-30, 2010) Meijer will present “The World’s Largest Halloween Party!” at the Louisville Zoo where little ones can dress up in their wildest costumes and set off on a magical journey through the Zoo.

This beloved annual community tradition provides not-so-scary fun for families and features costumed characters to meet and greet and fanciful, larger-than-life storybook scenes throughout the Zoo. Plus there’s trick-or-treating for kids 11 and under. (In an effort to be “green,” we are asking children to bring their own trick-or-treat bag to the event.)  New this year is Toyland, where everyone’s favorite toys come to life – but they are really larger than life!

As a special treat, on October 22-23, PNC’s Grow Up Great Mobile Learning Adventure at the Zoo’s front entrance will be taking free photos of little ones in their costumes. On October 28-30, the fun will start before guests even enter the party when they visit Meijer’s Mobile Virtual Playground at the Zoo’s front entrance.

Also be sure to check out:

  • Meijer’s Pirate’s Cove
  • Mumpkin the Giant Talking Pumpkin
  • Super Hero City
  • PNC’s Grow Up Great Storybook Land
  • Subway’s Land of Oz
  • Ogre’s Swamp
  • And much, much more!

All main Party festivities are included with regular party admission.

Several special “thrilling” experiences will be available for the adventuresome (special fees and some restrictions apply). These include:

  • Dinosaurs! at Night.  16 super life-like animatronic dinosaurs are amazing during the day but they are spectacular at night! ($4 per person)
  • Spooktacular Haunted Carousel ($2 per person)
  • 4-D ride with SpongeBob SquarePants ™($4 per person)
  • NEW Zip Line over Meijer’s Pirate’s Cove at Waterfowl Lake ($10.80)
  • Sky Trail ® High Adventure Course ( $6.30)
  • The  Headless Horseman of Sleepy  Hollow Tour sponsored by Councilman Jim King, District 10 with additional support from Councilman James Peden, District 23 ($2)

The Zoo closes to daytime visitors at 3 p.m. on event days and Halloween Party guests can enter from 5 to 8:30 p.m. A special ticket for the event is required for visitors age 3 and up.

Ticket price is $8 per person at the Zoo or online now at www.louisvillezoo.org. Advance discount tickets are available at area Meijer stores for $6.50 ($1.50 off full-priced tickets).  Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets for $6.50 per person online at www.louisvillezoo.org or by contacting the Zoo’s Group Sales department at 238-5348 at least 72 hours in advance.

The party is free for Louisville Zoo members (and any persons covered by their membership) on select nights—October 8-10 and 14-17.  Louisville Zoo Members must purchase half-price tickets ($4) for other nights. These tickets are only available at the Zoo or online.

This event is one of the Zoo’s major fundraising events, so encourage friends and family to support the Zoo by attending this time-honored family activity.

There are various parking options for the Halloween event. To park in the Zoo’s main parking lot, there is a $5 parking fee per car. Free parking and shuttle bus service is available at the Derby City Ball Field (from I-264, drive north toward the Zoo on Poplar Level Road and turn right at Taylor Avenue by Wendy’s Restaurant. Go to the end of the block and follow the signs.) Shuttles start about 15 minutes prior the beginning of the event and do not stop until the last car leaves the ball field. Shuttles are handicapped accessible and can handle strollers and wagons.

For answers to frequently asked questions about the party, visit http://www.louisvillezoo.org/events/halloween.htm.

“The World’s Largest Halloween Party!” presented by Meijer is also made possible by the sponsorship of Momslikeme.com, PNC Grow Up Great and Subway.

Additional sponsorship is provided by Councilman Jim King, 10th District, Gattiland, Kentucky State Fair Board, Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust, UPS and White Lion — the movie.

With additional support from All About Kids, Calistoga Artisan Sandwiches, Caring for your Smile – Dr. Westerman, Carnes and Setzer Transportation, Chili’s Grill and Bar, Delta Dental, Hartland Equipment Company, Lead Safe Louisville, Philpott Hay Company, Sysco, Tumbleweed Southwest Grill and Wolter Chiropractic.
