One of the most scenic and beautiful parks in the Kentucky State Park system is Pine Mountain State Resort Park. The views redefine breathtaking, so any chance you get to visit this park should be an opportunity you jump at. If you enjoy fishing, the Park will give you an opportunity you’ll especially love in November.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park will host its Fly Fishing Weekend on  November 11-12.

Participants will learn to fly fish in the beautiful autumn mountains during this two-day workshop. It will include choosing equipment, fly selection, reading a stream, casting, and hooking and landing a fish.

The weekend package includes a Saturday continental breakfast, classroom and casting instruction on Saturday, Saturday night’s lodging, a Sunday streamside lunch, and actual fly fishing on Sunday.

This workshop starts with an 8 a.m. Saturday breakfast, followed by a 9 a.m. classroom experience. After lunch on your own, the class resumes with individual casting instructions. After dinner, participants can watch the film “A River Runs Through It.”

Sunday’s class will include fishing instruction, fishing on your own and a box lunch along Clear Creek.

The package cost is $189 per person or $295 per couple.

For information and reservations, call 606-337-3066 or email Keith Bowling at keith.bowling@ky.gov.

The park has a 30-room lodge, cottages and a full-service restaurant. It also has a golf course and other recreational opportunities for guests. Pine Mountain State Resort Park is located south of Pineville, on U.S. 25E, 10 miles north of Middlesboro.

‘Owl Prowl’ Planned for Pine Mountain State Resort Park Nov. 28

November 3, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pine Mountain State Resort Park

View from Pine Mountain State Resort Park

I know I’ve told you probably 3, 544. 633 times how beautiful Pine Mountain State Resort Park is – but if you’ve seen it for yourself, you know why I’m a broken record. If you haven’t seen the beautiful park set in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, I hope you’ll go soon.

The park is picturesque and downright breathtaking anytime of the year. In fact, if I could be assured of access to gluten free food in the park’s restaurant, I think a weekend at the park’s lodge – looking out at snow-covered mountains would be the experience of a lifetime.

If you’re counting, that makes 3, 544. 634.

If you love owls, the following press release from the Kentucky State Parks is right up your tree.

From the State Parks:

OwlIf you’re a night owl, or if you just want to learn more about owls, make plans to visit Pine Mountain State Resort Park for its “Owl Prowl” the evening of Nov. 28.

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with a program on “Silent Predators of the Night” conducted by Mitch Whitaker of the Letcher County Rehabilitation and Education Center with live owls. Guests who plan to take the hike will gather at 8 p.m. in the upper lobby.

The group will drive to the old campground for the owl prowl led by naturalists from Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and Pine Mountain State Resort Park.

Guests should bring a small flashlight or headlamp (red light preferred), binoculars, and appropriate clothing for the weather. The park’s restaurant and lodge will be open and a special lodging rate for owl prowl guests is available. The event is free.

For more information, call 606-337-3066.

Cloudsplitter 100 Along Pine Mountain Scenic Trail: Scenic Event Set for Oct. 3-4, 2015

September 2, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pine Mountain in Autumn Pictures

Pine Mountain State Resort Park: Unbelievable Views!

Beautiful Pine Mountain and Pine Mountain State Resort Park are MUST SEEs year-round, but never more so than in autumn. When the leaves are turning, the scenery is positively breathtaking. Whatever you do, be sure to visit the park at least once this fall. You will not regret it – but, whatever you do, take your camera!

Another piece of advice… if it’s available (on the buffet), eat the Potato Soup in the lodge’s restaurant. Holy Cats, it’s out of this world delicious. Seriously, you won’t be able to eat just one bowl.

The Cloudsplitter 100 Along Pine Mountain Scenic Trail event is just around the corner. See the press release below for all the details.

From Kentucky Tourism:

A 100-mile trail race along the top of Pine Mountain will take place the weekend of Oct. 3-4, 2015.

The Cloudsplitter 100 is part of the Kentucky Outdoor Adventure Games taking place during October.

The out-and-back course, as well as the accompanying 100k, 50k and 25k races, will wind along the rugged, rocky and remote Pine Mountain Scenic Trail through Pike and Letcher counties in southeastern Kentucky.

“The Cloudsplitter has again been chosen by USA Track & Field to be the Mountain, Ultra Distance and Trail Championships for Kentucky,” said race director Susan Howell. “The world-class natural resources, spectacular parks, rivers and trails, the abundant natural beauty and a very rich music heritage make this area an undiscovered treasure, well worth an annual event such as the Cloudsplitter.”

Pine Mountain is home to diverse plant life, making it a true ecological treasure.

The Pine Mountain Scenic Trail traces a geological fault line along the southern Kentucky-Virginia border, stretching from Breaks Interstate Park to near Whitesburg, where it offers breathtaking views of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee.

This is one of the most physically demanding trails in the east, and it remains a significant unprotected wilderness area.

The registration deadline for the race is Sept. 27. For registration and more information about these races, visit: www.cloudsplitter100.com

The Kentucky Outdoor Adventure Games feature a variety of outdoor events held across the state during October. These events illustrate the beauty of the outdoors in Kentucky, as well as the many adventure tourism opportunities.

For more information about the games, visit: www.adventuregames2015.com

To find information about all of the outdoor opportunities and locations, as well as a calendar of events happening all across Kentucky, visit the Office of Adventure Tourism’s website atwww.kentuckytourism.com/outdoor-adventure

Pine Mountain State Resort Park: Sunday Buffet Dinners with a “Mountain View”

June 15, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Pine Mountain Grilled Chicken Salad and Rolls

Pine Mountain State Resort Park’s Restaurant, Mountain View

I associate many things with beautiful Pine Mountain State Resort Park…

  • beautiful surroundings and scenery that defy description
  • a beautiful lodge that feels like the comfiest snow lodge in the world
  • friendly (very friendly) people
  • some of the best potato soup I’ve ever had!

When my husband and I first visited Pine Mountain State Resort Park, I had a bowl of potato soup that is now legendary in our family.  Okay, so it was actually three bowls, but who’s counting? It was extraordinary and I remember it fondly to this day, even though it’s been several years.

Beautiful Pine Mountain State Resort Park is cooking up something delicious (see what I did there?) and you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor each Sunday beginning July 5, 2015.

A Sunday buffet in the Park’s restaurant (Mountain View – one of the most perfectly named restaurants in the State Park system) will become a weekly event served noon to 4 p.m.

The menu for July 5 includes roast beef carved on the line, fried chicken, catfish with hushpuppies, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, soup, salad, banana pudding and blackberry cobbler. The menu will vary week to week.

The price for adults is $14, and the price for children ages 6-12 is $7. The price does not include drink or gratuity.

For more information, call 606-337-3066.

The park has a 30-room lodge, cottages and a full-service restaurant. It also has a golf course and other recreational opportunities for guests. Pine Mountain State Resort Park is located south of Pineville, on U.S. 25E, 10 miles north of Middlesboro. It’s in the mountains and is unspeakably gorgeous.
