240 Percent Increase in Childhood Covid-19 Cases Since July: St. Jude’s Experts Response to the Dire Situation

September 17, 2021 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

The following (VERY troubling news and press release is from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We are in a very dangerous time in most parts of our country and most of us know it… the ones who don’t “know” it are so far in the darkness of denial that it scares me to think what it’d take for them to see the light of reality.

And just so you know, if you’re one of those constantly angry deniers, don’t waste your time spouting off your anger or nonsense in the comments – I’ll neither read them or publish them. Comments have to be approved by me for them to show up on the blog, so, again, if you’re one of those people, don’t waste your time. Please, everyone, just read the facts and take every precaution you can to keep your family, friends, and community safe.

St. Jude pediatric infectious disease expert says, “our children are in a very, very dangerous moment”

Less than half of eligible adolescents are currently vaccinated, as the Delta variant surges in pediatric populations across the country

MEMPHIS, TENN. – New data from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows a 240% increase in Covid-19 cases since July in our nation’s children and Diego R. Hijano, M.D., a pediatric infectious disease specialist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN is warning that unless we act now our kids are facing the most dangerous moment of their lifetimes.

“The message here cannot be more clear, all parents and eligible children should take steps today to receive the life-saving Covid-19 vaccine,” said St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Dr. Diego Hijano who specializes in infectious diseases in children and conducts research into the spread of respiratory viruses among pediatric populations.

Dr. Hijano continued, “Our children are in a very, very dangerous moment and the Delta variant has proven, as predicted, to be the most highly transmittable strain of the virus we’ve yet faced. With less than half of the eligible adolescent population fully vaccinated, every American must do their part and take action now by getting vaccinated and masking up in public settings – or the situation is likely to get worse and our kids will continue to suffer.”

Dr. Diego Hijano specializes in infectious diseases in children and conducts research into the spread of respiratory viruses among pediatric populations. The FDA’s emergency use authorization for the Covid-19 vaccine covers every child 12 years old and up. The CDC Director reported yesterday the public health agency’s scientists are working on the Covid-19 vaccine for children younger than 12 and hope to have it available by the end of the year.

“As we await emergency use authorization of the Covid-19 vaccine for children younger than 12 years of age, those in close contact with them should be taking additional precautions such as masking up to protect them,” Dr. Hijano concluded.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats and cures childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. It is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. St. Jude is ranked the No. 1 pediatric cancer hospital by U.S. News & World Report. Treatments developed at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to 80 percent since the hospital opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing and food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Fly Fishing at Pine Mountain

One of the most scenic and beautiful parks in the Kentucky State Park system is Pine Mountain State Resort Park. The views redefine breathtaking, so any chance you get to visit this park should be an opportunity you jump at. If you enjoy fishing, the Park will give you an opportunity you’ll especially love in November.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park will host its Fly Fishing Weekend on  November 11-12.

Participants will learn to fly fish in the beautiful autumn mountains during this two-day workshop. It will include choosing equipment, fly selection, reading a stream, casting, and hooking and landing a fish.

The weekend package includes a Saturday continental breakfast, classroom and casting instruction on Saturday, Saturday night’s lodging, a Sunday streamside lunch, and actual fly fishing on Sunday.

This workshop starts with an 8 a.m. Saturday breakfast, followed by a 9 a.m. classroom experience. After lunch on your own, the class resumes with individual casting instructions. After dinner, participants can watch the film “A River Runs Through It.”

The package cost is $189 per person or $295 per couple.

For information and reservations, call 606-337-3066 or email Keith Bowling at keith.bowling@ky.gov.

The park has a 30-room lodge, cottages and a full-service restaurant. It also has a golf course and other recreational opportunities for guests. Pine Mountain State Resort Park is located south of Pineville, on U.S. 25E, 10 miles north of Middlesboro.

Wildlife Celebration at Woodlands Nature Station: May 27-29, 2017

May 16, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Great Horned Owl Nature Station LBL

Gorgeous Great Horned Owl

Woodlands Nature Station is one of our favorite places to visit in the Land Between the Lakes. The animals and birds are simply breathtaking and we, literally, see (and photograph) something new each time we visit… which is, trust me, OFTEN.

The Nature Station will have their annual Wildlife Celebration, Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday through Monday, May 27-29, 2017. Nature Station admission is $5 age 13 and up, $3 age 5-12, and free for ages 4 and under.

Guests can learn all about nature’s superheroes, visit with Smokey Bear and find ways they can assist wildlife in the Nature Station’s backyard at Land Between the Lakes. Special event programs are included with standard admission unless otherwise noted.

“Join us to help celebrate the diversity and complexity of native wildlife through a fun superhero theme. Bring the whole family and see wolves, turkeys and bats in a whole new way,” says Monica West, Land Between the Lakes naturalist. “We’re also offering two canoe trips that weekend for people to view wildlife from the water. We usually see a lot of native birds, mammals and reptiles along the shoreline and on the water during these outings.”

{Continued Below….}

White-Breasted Nuthatch LBL Nature Station

White-Breasted Nuthatch

Nestled in the woods between Honker and Hematite lakes, the Nature Station serves as a gateway to the 6,800-acre Nature Watch Area. The friendly and very knowledgeable staff also serve as “go to” specialists for wildlife viewing throughout Land Between the Lakes.

One of the coolest things about the Nature Station is that, in addition to their many wonderful resident birds, animals, turtles, and snakes, you’ll see birds and animals who also choose to call this paradise home.  A cage doesn’t keep them sticking around… appreciation for being treated like royalty does!  We are a couple of the biggest bird lovers you’ll ever meet. We don’t just have one “feeding station” in our yard… we have multiple feeding stations, suet feeders, houses, and too many feeders to count. So, we are very familiar with seeing a variety of birds. Yet, we STILL see birds at the Nature Station we don’t see regularly in our own yard.

You’ll also frequently see squirrels who call this beautiful place home. If you’re lucky, you might even see a skunk or two (pictured below)! We’ve had that great honor a couple of times. Other visitors to the center looked at me like I was “half crazy” when I stepped closer and got down on their level to take a picture. My husband just smiled as if to say, “If you think she’s half-crazy, you’re underestimating her.”

Gotta admit he’s right. When it comes to animals, I’m off my chain.  That’s why The Nature Station is one of my favorite places on earth. They’re my kind of people.

{Continued Below the Cute Little Stinker….}

Beautiful Skunk at the Nature Station

Adorable Skunk at the Nature Station Last Autumn

Something that I love about the staff (aside from the friendliness and eagerness to “brag” on the beauties they care for) is that, it seems, each member has an “area of expertise.”  One may know everything there is to possibly know about wolves while another could tell you things you’d never even imagined about owls. One may be a walking turtle encyclopedia while another knows more about turkeys than the turkeys know themselves.

They even have a resident snake expert who seems to love snakes as much as I love my cats. Go figure!

Hats for Hope Partners with Kosair Charities for Their 14th Annual Event

April 6, 2017 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Hats for Hope Kosair Charities
Hats for Hope will once again partner with Kosair Charities for a signature pre-Derby silent auction cocktail event, which will be held April 20, 2017 at the Triple Crown Conference Center located at 1776 Plantside Drive in Louisville. Over the past 13 years, Hats for Hope has raised well over a half million dollars by auctioning new and gently worn designer Kentucky Derby hats, as well as high end auction items including gift baskets, jewelry, gift certificates, trips and more. In addition to the silent auction, guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a complimentary cocktail or soda, and desserts. Beyond this, a cash bar will be available. Attendees will also enjoy trying on hats and posing for photographs with their friends. “We will have 300+ of our best Derby hats available for auction as well as gift packages and tickets to favorite sporting events. Tickets are available online starting today, and we recommended that ticket purchases be made early,” stated Ann Mudge, the fundraiser’s Chair. Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 the day of the event. To purchase tickets or to learn more about this exciting event, visit www.hatsforhopelouisville.org. Hats for Hope has grown from a small group of volunteers creating a corporate fundraiser to a premier event and Louisville tradition to kick-off the Derby season. Last year, the event raised $65,500 in support of the fight against cancer.

The event celebrates survivorship, friendship, fashion and fun. In recent years, event proceeds have supported primarily breast cancer patient care; however, this is the second year we will be expanding our scope to support families and children affected by cancer. Kosair Charities has agreed to partner with Hats for Hope in order to carry the fundraiser well into the future. About Kosair Charities Since 1923 Kosair Charities has had one primary mission – helping children in need. Kosair Charities knows that the quality of a child’s tomorrow depends largely on the quality of health, medical treatment, and support a child receives today. Kosair Charities supports over 100 pediatric agencies in our community by donating funding for research, clinical services, health education and care every year.

For more information please visit http://kosair.org or call 502.637.7696.
