Video: Kentucky Lake Magic at Lighthouse Landing

August 7, 2015 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

[youtube id=”MzUMvtymfI8″]

While this video is shorter than a cat’s nose, it gives you an idea of just how peaceful and perfect a day at Kentucky Lake can be.  Michael and I were hanging out on the deck overlooking Kentucky Lake, at Lighthouse Landing.  It was a gorgeous summer day with a wonderful breeze (that’s what you hear in the video).

The moment begged for a little video, so I obliged.

Grand Rivers is an uncommonly special place. It’s a beautiful “village” between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Minutes from Land Between the Lakes and Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park, you’re literally surrounded by things to do, see, and photograph.

When most people think of Grand Rivers, they think of Grand Rivers Variety (at Badgett Playhouse), Lighthouse Landing, Green Turtle Bay, the Fudge Factory (YUM!) and Patti’s Settlement (legendary Kentucky restaurant).

While I have nothing but mammoth love for each of these places, when I think of Grand Rivers, I think of moments. Moments like the one captured in the video.

Candy Land in Grand Rivers: A Delicious Kentucky Tradition

May 13, 2014 by Joi Sigers 11 Comments

Candy Land in Grand Rivers, Ky

When it comes to talking about wonderful Kentucky food, one of the first places that pops into my head is Candy Land near Kentucky Lake (Hwy 62, Grand Rivers, to be exact – see map below). This wonderful Kentucky landmark brings back wonderful memories for any of us who have been visiting Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, and Land Between the Lakes for as long as we can remember.  Each time we drive by or walk into Candy Land, it’s like I’m a little girl all over again – trying hard to take it all in at once and wondering how something so deliciously perfect can even exist!

I can remember visiting Candy Land when I was really young – the moment wouldn’t have been more magical if I’d stepped into Santa’s Workshop.  If fact, then (and now) you’d never convince me that Santa could come up with candy this good.

Sorry, Santa. I’m just keeping it real.

Candy Land in Grand Rivers, Ky

We almost always buy Pecan Logs on our trips to Candy Land and by “almost always,” I mean every single time. We don’t stop there, of course. We also buy a great assortment of other candies to eat on the way back home and we stock up for candy to last us until our next visit.

On a recent trip, we got Chocolate Covered Apricots and a bag of DELICIOUS Chocolate and Coconut candy. Every candy at Candy Land is out of this world and is unlike anything you can find in any grocery store. This candy tastes like you made it at home… assuming you’re a great cook, that is.

If you have to eat gluten free, be sure to read the ingredients which are printed on the tabs of each bag of candy.  I’ve found that A LOT of candy doesn’t have any flour or other sources of gluten in it, but some do and it’s just better to be safe than sorry.

The next time you’re around Kentucky Lake, the LBL, or Lake Barkley, promise me you’ll stop in Candy Land. You’ll fall in love with candy all over again.

Picture of the Day: The Always Beautiful Kentucky Lake

April 22, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kentucky Lake

When my camera and I are taking pictures of Kentucky, we’re as happy and content as pigs in mud. While that imagery leaves something to be desired, the picture of Kentucky Lake (above) doesn’t leave anything to be desired.  Kentucky Lake is one of those photo subjects that never disappoints.

It would be impossible for her to take a bad picture!  Too much loveliness to ever do anything but shine.

To see Kentucky’s largest lake shine in more photo shoots, see the Kentucky Lake Pictures album.

Picture of the Day: Beautiful Kentucky Lake and Eggner’s Ferry Bridge

March 18, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Kentucky Lake
On a recent trip to the Land Between the Lakes, we stopped at one of our favorite places in all of Kentucky: Kenlake State Resort Park.  It was a gorgeous day, so we did a lot of walking around taking in the beautiful sights: Kentucky Lake, boats, gulls, robins, trees on the verge of dressing in their beautiful spring and summer wardrobe, and people of all ages enjoying the show.

Of course I took my camera – I wouldn’t dream of  going anywhere in this beautiful state without my trusty “capture the magic in the moment” camera!

I was lining up a shot of the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge (looking as marvelous as ever, without a hint of the tragedy that had befallen it last year) when I noticed a couple of girls  in the distance, enjoying the lovely day as much as we were.  One in particular had a certain aura about her – one that suggested she wasn’t just content to “quietly observe” her surroundings, she wanted to “live out loud” in her surroundings.

Yes, it does take one to know one, actually.

I knew my kindred spirit would not disappoint, so I waited a few seconds and BAM, up went the arms, out shot the leg!  I whispered a silent, “Thank you, my dear…” as I snapped the picture and hoped it’d turn out as cute as I’d hoped.

I try to capture moments that define an experience when I take pictures. I want anyone who sees the picture to “feel” as though they were there. This is never more important to me than when I’m photographing people, places, things, animals, flowers, food, etc. in my beloved state of Kentucky. I want fellow Kentuckians to feel the love and pride I feel for our state and I want others to see a billion and one reasons to come get in on the fun.

The enthusiasm of this girl, in my opinion, totally summed up how my husband and I felt on this beautiful day. Everything seemed to be coming alive for the spring and summer seasons in the Land Between the Lakes area. Daffodils were blooming, boats were being primed to get back into the water, people were fishing – there was a palpable excitement in the air!

So much so that it made you want to throw your hands in the air, kick out your leg, and dance with the moment.

Signs of Spring and Summer are Everywhere at Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes

March 16, 2013 by Joi Sigers Leave a Comment

Daffodils in Land Between the Lakes, March 2013

Saturday, Michael and I took a much-needed trip to Kentucky Lake and the Land Between the Lakes. I say “much needed” because:

  1. We hadn’t been in a while.
  2. These trips almost always involve fried catfish (one of my reasons for living).
  3. Michael, like most people who work Monday – Friday, deals with a steady stream of human beings. A steady stream of human beings can lead to raised levels of stress. Running away from it all (even if it’s just for a day) can keep you sane…. especially when you escape to such a beautiful and relaxing place.

The Land Between the Lakes is gorgeous, year-round, winter, spring, summer, and fall – but early spring brings with it its own special feelings of excitement and anticipation. I wanted to capture a little bit of these feelings in pictures.

From daffodils blooming in the Land Between the Lakes to boats being primed and prepped for months of life on the lakes at Lighthouse Landing, the entire region’s coming alive and it’s a beautiful thing to see. Grand Rivers was flooded with people (a marathon combined with the always popular Patti’s 1880’s Settlement turned this peaceful little village into a hot spot), so we didn’t make it to Green Turtle Bay, but undoubtedly it’s bustling with excitement as well.

Grab your camera and head off for the wonderful Lakes Region in Kentucky at your earliest convenience.

What can you do in the Lake’s Region? Plenty! Area attractions include:

  • Lake Barkley State Resort Park
  • Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park
  • Elk & Bison Prairie
  • Golden Pond Planetarium
  • The 1850’s Homeplace
  • The Nature Station
  • Green Turtle Bay Resort and Marina
  • Grand Rivers, Kentucky (“Village Between the Lakes” – Kentucky Lake is one one side of the beautiful little village and Lake Barkley is on the other side. Right in the middle is some of the best homemade fudge in the world at the Fudge Factory and fun Branson, Missouri type musicals at Grand Rivers Variety – see below.)
  • Grand Rivers Variety
  • The Hitching Post and Old Kentucky Store (in Aurora – more excellent homemade fudge in a one of a kind tourist attraction-gift shop-antique collector’s dream come true!)
  • Kenlake State Resort Park

Whether you’re looking for a week long vacation, a weekend getaway, or simply a “daycation,” Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes are waiting to blow your mind. Blowing mind’s is what they do best…. that and fried catfish.
