Here are more pictures taken by Michael during Marina Day. I still can’t get over what a beautiful day it was -no one could have scripted better weather. Grand Rivers is always a beautiful little village (like something out of a fairy tale!), but she was even lovelier than usual this weekend. Truth be told, I think she loves a great party – and Marina Day is just that!
These pictures were taken at the beautiful Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina in Grand Rivers. We’ve been all over the country and have had the opportunity to stay in some remarkable resorts and condos – as far north as the Great Lakes and as far south as the Florida Keys, and I’ve never seen a more beautiful view than is granted to the condos at Green Turtle Bay. The condos pictured below actually remind me of some we stayed in on a trip to Hawks Cay in the Florida Keys.

This is an absolutely beautiful place. Breathtaking, even Visit Green Turtle Bay Resort & Marina’s website the first chance you get and let them tell you all about their “water way of life.”

I’ve been kind of draggy lately – not physically as much as emotionally. Our oldest cat – a much, much beloved diva, Prissy is really going downhill fast. (She’s 20 years old, so I guess that hill is long overdue.) Being thisclose to losing her has dampened my mood considerably, so Marina Day came at a good time. For a day, I could try to forget the “sad” side of life and just enjoy the “glad” side.
Fortunately, Grand Rivers knows how to throw a great party.
There are so many things I want to post about and I’m kind of worried about leaving anything out, so I’m going to actually add multiple posts throughout the day – covering individual topics. I’ll also be adding some really gorgeous pictures that my husband took.
I can’t tell you how much I loved seeing all of the families out together, having fun. We saw license plates from, literally all over – so families came from far and wide. I guarantee no one left without a smile on his or her face either. Are you kidding me, gorgeous scenery, great food, boat rides, games, music and FANTASTIC weather… And the only thing you had to pay for was the food?! Can’t beat it! What’s more, the food was beyond amazing and very reasonably priced.
As an unexpected surprise, the mega talented stars from the Variety! Show also made an appearance. I loved that! If you visit this site regularly, you know how much I enjoy them. Unfortunately, we had to leave not long after they took the stage – one of our three daughters needed a ride, and any parent knows that when one of your children call, all else takes a backseat.
Even great music and Red Velvet Cupcakes.
There’ll be more posts and pictures coming, so please check back. I have so much I want to cover – from a breakfast that blew my mind to boat rides that took the same mind a million miles (and cares) away. We also had some ridiculously good BBQ and a red velvet cupcake (served up courtesy of a woman in a Paula Deen wig, no less) that I’ve been thinking about since. I told you, these Grand Rivers people know how to throw a party!
Is it too soon to start looking forward to Marina Day 2009?
I’ve fallen in love with Docker’s Bayside Grill in Grand Rivers. It was love at first sight, actually, because I loved the atmosphere immediately. The decor set the tone beautifully and the workers were very, very friendly. I loved the fact that many of the diners came in fresh from being out on the water – all red-faced and looking for a tall glass of sweet tea, which was amazing, by the way.
As I’ve said before, when I go to a new restaurant – no matter where it is, how big it is, or what I’m eating – I order their onion rings. I am obsessed with onion rings (this food obsession curls up cozily beside my coffee, chocolate, Fudge Factory Peanut Butter Fudge, and fried catfish obsessions). I am, by now, the onion ring queen. I know my rings!
When we saw the menu, I clicked my heels when I saw Onion Rings on the menu. Naturally, I ordered a Catfish Sandwich and Onion Rings. My husband got the grilled salmon sandwich and fries. He had seen a picture of and read about their famous sink your boat omelet, so that’s what he wanted to order. However, our server said they stopped serving breakfast at 11:30. Given the fact that – counting my husband – during the 45 minutes we were there, six people tried to order the omelet, they should consider pulling a Cracker Barrel and serve breakfast all day. Personally, I wouldn’t eat breakfast past 10:00, but apparently lots of people would more than love to.
How many ways do I love Dockers? Let me count them…

EDIT (3/30/2015): Ironically, the onion rings now served at Docker’s are different from the ones I talked about in the review above. It isn’t anything the restaurant is doing differently – it’s a “supplier” decision. They’re still good, mind you, but the fries (in my opinion) are now even better than the onion rings.
Wow, I’m having “Grammar 101” flashbacks. I loved grammar, so I’m cool with that. Had it been an Algebra flashback, I’d be banging my head through the monitor right about now.Math and I have nothing at all to say about one another that doesn’t begin and end with $%.
So, why begin a post with a definition? Because I want everyone to keep this definition in mind for a minute. Jesus used parables often! Remember the good Samaritan. Jesus knew that people understood and remembered stories. Since he was very much interested in His teachings being understood and remembered, He utilized parables quite often.
On a much, much, lesser scale – I homeschooled our three daughters. When they were in the early elementary school grades, we read extensively about the Civil War.
When it was time to learn all about the Underground Railroad, one morning (while they were sleeping), I went through the house and set up “Safe Houses” – in hidden places (behind the couch, under a desk, inside an entertainment center, etc.). Fortunately, they had a great abundance of Barbies and those (combined with my own collection of Gone With the Wind dolls) made up our brave residents and bold travelers, while a few of the Ken dolls “got” to be the villains giving chase.
My Girls, our cats, and I had a ball. Years later, they still talk about our Underground Railroad. Most importantly, they learned more about this period of time than they would have just by reading or listening to me. We used this same technique throughout our years of homeschooling (though not always with barbies!).
People understand what they’re familiar with better than what they’re told. If you put a story “on their level,” using situations they’re familiar with, they simply “get it” better.
Jesus used situations, characters, and settings that his listeners would not only relate to but that people would remember for years to come. Was it effective?
What was your answer earlier when I asked you if you remembered the Good Samaritan?
The Cotton Patch Gospel begins its season today. In the past it has proven to be controversial. People apparently even got up to leave during the show. I’m not one to pass judgement on anyone (never have, never will), but how can you ever truly make your mind up about something unless you hear the whole story? Bearing in mind that it is a story, in the first place.
The Cotton Patch Gospel is a fictional retelling of the Greatest Non-fictional story ever told. A parable acted out, if you will. The writers have taken “Jesus” and brought Him to a present day setting – in the south. The idea was for people to be entertained and enlightened at the same time.
If the story sparks interest in just one person out of the thousands to ever see it, and if this one person picks up the Bible to read more about our savior, Jesus Christ – can’t we all agree that it would have been MORE than worth it?
I’ll personally be seeing the production this weekend – the whole production (wink). I’m expecting to be entertained, I’m expecting to laugh, and I’m expecting to be touched by the story. I’m not expecting a word for word production taken straight from the Bible. (If that were the case, it wouldn’t be set anywhere near Deep South, USA.)
I hope everyone who sees this story will go in with an open mind and out (at the end) with a full heart. As a Christian, I have zero tolerance for anything that even hints at disrespect toward Christians and I have less tolerance for anything that hints at disrespect toward God. But I’m going in with an open mind.
We’ll just see how it goes!
